The DS may have great games, and the touch screen is cool, but it looks like the old cheapass LCD games of yore. It's huge and I feel like an asshole on the train playing with it. The SP was decent enough that I could largely play while commuting without feeling too much like a jagweed, but the DS is a joke. Am I the only one who feels like they should be powdering their face when they open the DS?

The PSP has that SICK screen - and frankly that makes me feel like man-on-the-leading-edge instead of Strawberry Pussypants when I'm in public.

Yes, I'm sure the games are great on the DS and of course it's backwards compatible - but it's a portable and that spells Being In Public. No way am I holding that sissybox DS in public.

oh my god. i just shot coffee out of my nose

owwwww

I play my DS in public all the time. I hope I don't look like Strawberry Pussypants. :-/

I'm getting a PSP but honestly Id feel better playng the DS in public because it's way more discreet. Put it on the table in front of you and poke away.
You dont have to make a spectacle of yourselve everytime you turn the thing on.

OMG!!!!!! I just keeled over laughing at that American McGee thing!!!! :lol :lol :lol I work at a desk in my supervisors office and he's looking at me funny, lol!!

Wow, you've got this "I'm getting a PSP, so that gives me justification to discretely (or not) troll it to death" thing down pat don't you?

DS is the best GBA revision out there. Use it to play the old games until DS specific content catches up in quality and entertainment value.

Like the PSP, there is little in the way of game that are compelling right now. Down the road is a different story. i did not see listed:

boktai DS
Xenosaga DS
Baten Kaitos DS
etc.

eventually there will be great games for the DS. I'm very much looking forward to buying DS Wars ,the new Castlevania, and the new 4 swords title.

At the moment, thought, the library is a bit lacking.

Seriously. Astro Boy. Get it. It looks awesome on the DS, and is unquestionably one of the best portable games ever. You don't need any DS games. Just Astro Boy.

*cries* I got a DS for an early xmas gift and the giver of the DS got a PSP for himself. Thanks for making me feel even worse :( I already have a GBASP NES and tons of GBA games.

In sadder news Advance Wars DS won't be out til Fall 2005 ( I think) please, someone tell me I'm wrong? Its coming out sooner, right?

I'll probably feel better when Touch! and Band Brothers arrive in the US.

If you're scared to play any portable in public then you're dead to me.

Wear your geek badges with pride people!

Real men don't play portables in public. They just sit and think about how awesome they are.

no no no. i feel sorry for anyone who thinks they can look cool playing videogames in public. The trick is to make it as least noticeable as possible. DS works well for this. :D

I think the "trick," really, is to not care about looking "cool" in public. But I guess I always have been a bit eccentric, what, with me not caring about what COMPLETE AND UTTER STRANGERS THINK OF ME.

what ;_;

Still no dates for

Kirby DS, Goemon DS, Boktai DS, or Super Mario Bros. DS.

Sucks that Mario Kart and Advance Wars are that far off. The only benefit is maybe (just maybe) Nintendo might have some type of modest DS Network running by then.

I doubt we'll see FF: CC in Feburary. Haven't seen a single screen shot of that one.

That date, which is timed a week before E3 hits, suggests to me that this will be the first WiFi DS game. It makes perfect sense...

If it's not, however, I will have a fairly rapid turnaround on my DS stance.

Actually it doesn't. I tried it in a hotel last week, and it seems that the battery runs flat during the night. Luckily wasn't my only alarm.

On the subject matter on hand - congratulations! It'll be good fun if you know what you do. My advice is - having played virtually all of the games in the Japanese and US launch lineups:

1. Get Zoo Keeper. Most addictive puzzle game for ages. Works great with the stylus and is addictive as hell.

2. Import Chokkan Hitofude. Second most addictive puzzle game for ages. Refreshingly different, insanely addictive and again, makes great use of the stylus.

3. Import Sawaru Made in Wario. It's great fun and you can play it without any knowledge of Japanese - almost always you can guess what to do.

4. Get Super Mario 64 DS for the minigames only. The minigames are brilliant, but I was really suprised on how boring the 3D adventure felt now. And playing it with the Nintendo-strap-on is not too hot, either. But the minigames really rock.

5. If you have still money, you might want to check out Feel the Magic from Sega. I would only rent it - it was a big letdown to me, I had probably just too big expectations. Fun for a while, but after the novelty value is gone (after a couple of hours) I haven't played it once.

6. Avoid all other 3rd party content at all costs. At best it's mediocre, but mostly utter crap.

7. Watch out for wear out on the stylus. It can happen in rubbing games and will scratch the screen. Bad.

So, as a summary, you'll be getting THE puzzle/minigame device mainly suited for Nintendo's firstparty stuff. Great fun for quick minigame fixes or long puzzle sessions.

I gotta hand it to ya, that's an incredibly fair and realistic breakdown of the DS.

The alarm works great.
If you're sleeping, PLUG IT IN!

Mario 64 holds up well today, but I agree with everything else you said.

I agree with everything except the assertion that Mario 64 doesn't hold up. I think it's still a heck of a lot of fun and it lends itself well to playing in 10 minute bursts. (I use dual-hand control mode w/ a stylus most of the time).

Most of those are obviously placeholder dates... I'd have thought you'd know better than that by now.

More bad news, according to EBgames:
Zoo Keeper 1/17

*doubletake* wha wha whaaaaaa?

It's ZOO KEEPER, not exactly a complicated translation that needs a lot of QA. Why would it be delayed? Are they just trying to stretch out the the releases more?

Pretty nice breakdown of the current situation. Although I disgree with this one since Zoo Keeper & Feel the Magic would fall into the 3rd party category. Madden is actually pretty fun too.

I hope they are figuring out how to sell it for $30. :D

Also, I read the Quest mode requires translation, which is what's kept me from importing.

you shoulda just told em to not get you one that you instead wanted a PSP. you would have been much happier, i guarantee it. when PSP hits, you are gonna want one in a bad way.

i told my daughter i won't get her a DS (was on her Christmas list) that to instead wait and i would get her the PSP which IMO i thought will be a much better platform.

I don't know...the DS and its touching interface seems like it would be better suited for children than the PSP.

Oh well, at least "she'll" be getting a PSP that Daddy can "borrow" sometimes. :D

I was suprised at how durable the DS screen really seems to be. I've seen kids smashing the stylus point down onto the screen as hard as they could...and it did not seem to result in any significant damage. Impressive!

Yep, hence the carefully worded avoid all other 3rd party content. ;)

Not to mention I've seen kids at work mistakenly think the TOP SCREEN was the touch one, and absolutely mash at that with the stylus, their fingers, cocks, etc. And it, also, has held up well thus far.

damn that's cold. I feel sorry for your daughter. DS seems to be striking a chord with women. I doubt she'll be too excited about getting a PSP instead :(

Same here. It seems like the DS will continue Nintendo's legacy of damn-near unbreakable hardware.

Quest mode is the best mode I think; it's the one I play all the time on Zooo. You'd only have to learn a few words to figure it out.

I think I'm just going to import it along with Hitofude and get my holiday puzzling on.

When is ZOO KEEPER coming out in NA? I'm always a sucker for good portable puzzle games.

Does the screen even easily scratch? I mean, I've seen what looks like scratches on the screen before...but a quick wipe removed them. Very cool.

I have three hairline scratches in the middle of my touchscreen (like 1-2 mm each). I have no idea how they got there... Probably that damn "roll the snowball" minigame from Mario 64.

They don't bother me, but they are there.

Do GBA games *really* look that much better on a DS versus an SP? Does someone have side by side pics of the same game on DS and SP to show...? I don't mind offing my GBA SP as a trade in towards a DS if they look *that* much better.

Somebody here (chittagong, I think) was talking about the stylus getting worn down to a sharp point after playing a lot of Feel The Magic -- and then subsequently scratching the screen -- but so far every DS unit I've encountered looked pretty good.

It does indeed, if you are careless. I figured it'd be undestructible and happily rubbed away in the sand pit minigame in Feel the Magic. After some furious rubbing I felt a nasty scratch when sliding the stylus. Some plastic had come off the stylus, creating a sharp edge that really violated the screen. Now there is one nasty big scratch that can be a bit problematic in Hitofude sometimes.

Yes. The difference is very significant. Unfortunately I don't have any pics, but there are some floating around on the Internet...maybe someone more search-savvy than I can dig them up.

Yeah, they really do. They lose the bluish hue. They look more like screenshots of the game on your computer than they actually do on the GBASP.

^^^^ GBA games one the DS look a TON better... I shutter now when I try a game on the SP...

StoOge, just take the damn DS ... as with any new system, it's gonna be bone dry for a few months ...... If you're into Mario 64 it'll hold you over for a while.
