Do GBA games *really* look that much better on a DS versus an SP? Does someone have side by side pics of the same game on DS and SP to show...? I don't mind offing my GBA SP as a trade in towards a DS if they look *that* much better.

Oh, yes. You might not realize it at first, but if you play something on a DS for a while, then go BACK to the GBA SP... My God. I've said it before, you really can't appreciate all the detail developers have put into backgrounds and shit until you play the games on the DS. It's really amazing, actually. I feel lame and stupid for thinking the SP upgraded the screen so much, in hindsight. :\

Not to mention how much easier it is on the eyes, literally. It's so much sharper than the SP, and I think it lets your eyes relax more when you're playing.

To me, this alone makes the DS worth it to anyone who authentically likes GBA games. Even if they don't purchase a single DS game, the improved experience of playing GBA games on the new screen is worth it alone in my book.

you shoulda just told em to not get you one that you instead wanted a PSP. you would have been much happier, i guarantee it. when PSP hits, you are gonna want one in a bad way.

i told my daughter i won't get her a DS (was on her Christmas list) that to instead wait and i would get her the PSP which IMO i thought will be a much better platform.

Does she want the PSP?

Thats one thing Im happy about is the backlit screen... the game gear is still one of the best looking pictures on a portable console, IMO.

While Im here, what is and how does the thumbstrap work? Ive heard its part of the systems carrying strap or something like that.. if someone could describe this to me I would appreciate it. sounds like an odd contraption..

also, does this wear down like a stylus tip does? and is the thumbstrap replaceable?

It's attached to the back of the system and doubles as a wrist strap for carrying the system around.
It tightens around your left thumn and is used as an analog nub on the touch screen. I don't like the way it works and have found the Dpad works just fine.

It doesn't seem like it will wear down, but if it does I'm sure there's a way to replace it.

Agreed. Unless shpanky wants to disappoint her for a few months or inadvertantly raise a fanbot. It'd be a different thing if you couldn't afford it, or had already gotten her stuff or whatever. Maybe even if she had a tendancy to like things for a short while then drop all interest.

Just like this guy should be able to want a PSP, and have his parents get him that if it's what he really wants. But that said... PSP is a far way off, and this is a gift, it's hardly his own money. Why not have both?
