OK State Basketball player Marcus Smart shoves fan

This thread should be 100 percent pro-Smart. But, when you have a worldly forum, you really get to see how some just don't give a fuck about the respect for a black person.

I feel he called him a racist term. Its the only logical explanation for the behavior.

Per Twitter, 3 game suspension for Smart. He's going to have to use some really thick skin in any remaining road games for the year. Even more people will try to deliberately taunt him

All this nitpicking about what the fan said to Smarts...
All these "be the bigger man!" replies from people who probably have no idea what that shit feels like on a regular basis...

All these pointless discussions, all this talk about what the victim could have done better.

It's always the same with you guys; do anything to distract from the issue of someone being the victim of stupid racism, sexism etc...

It really makes me wonder, why is everyone doing everything but focusing on eliminating the racist climate at these events? What is everybody on GAF afraid of?

Heights.

You mean the discussion of the last two pages over how plenty of people should be kicked out of games?

It's not magically being ignored. I have to bring it up all the time because people are so quick to instantly think I'm some racist jackass because I said a heated 19 year old's best move was probably not to push someone.

Because doing that here unfairly leads to the assumption that this person, Jeff Orr, was a racist and bigot without anything confirming it as true. People have already judged the fan, have ruled him guilty. How is that fair?

Edit: Jeff Orr has released a statement. Said he called him a "piece of crap." Has also volunteered to not attend any further games.

So to recap: We have a fan say he didn't use a racial slur. We have no comments from OSU, Smart, Ford or anyone connected with OSU saying he used racial language.

Yeah alright. You sure sound like you want to do something against it.
"Deal with it bro!" has been your mantra.

I was bullied in middle school. I still to this day don't know why. I wasn't a super nerd. I didn't play magic cards before school. Just two or three guys didn't like me. So they picked on me. They insulted me. They hit me.

I didn't "deal with it". I talked to teachers and later administrators about it. They got in trouble. It happened a little more. They got in trouble again. It stopped. They probably hated me more. Whatever. They now have shitty dead end jobs, and I've done more with my life than they ever will.

There are ways of handling this. You can fix the problem at it's core. Encourage officials to kick more fans out of games for unruly behavior.

Pushing them is NOT how you handle this.

I didn't hit them back. It's not because I was wuss or I couldn't take them. It's because I turned the other cheek. It wasn't always easy. I was the bigger man. Sorry I expect more than you do out of people.

We all know WHY he did this. We all agree we should try and fix that problem. We all agree he shouldn't have pushed someone. We're all on the same page here. But it seems everyone wants to paint someone as if you're on a certain side or not.

Minorities get bullied as kids and adults.

In conjunction with a review of the actions of Oklahoma State guard Marcus Smart by the Big 12 Conference, Texas Tech has completed its own thorough investigation regarding the incident at last night's basketball game involving Red Raider fan Jeff Orr. Texas Tech interviewed Mr. Orr along with numerous fans, photographers and arena personnel that were seated in the area surrounding him. Mr. Orr vehemently denied the accusation that he used a racial slur and no one in the vicinity of Mr. Orr heard such a slur.

Mr. Orr has admitted to directing an inappropriate phrase toward Marcus Smart. Texas Tech has been able to verify that statement independently through video provided by Texas Tech Sports Broadcasting. At no point on the film can a racial slur be heard.

Texas Tech is committed to sportsmanship and expects fans to abide by the rules set forth by the Big 12 Conference and the university. Comments such as those used by Mr. Orr are unacceptable and not condoned by Texas Tech University.

As a result of this incident, Mr. Orr has voluntarily agreed to not attend a Texas Tech home or away basketball game for the remainder of the season.

Jeff Orr Statement

"I would like to take this opportunity to offer my sincere apologies to Marcus Smart, Oklahoma State, Tubby Smith and the Texas Tech Men's Basketball program. My actions last night were inappropriate and do not reflect myself or Texas Tech - a university I love dearly. I regret calling Mr. Smart a "piece of crap" but I want to make it known that I did not use a racial slur of any kind. Additionally, I would like to offer my apologies to Texas Tech fans that have been embarrassed by the attention this incident has created."
.

Obviously the dude should be banned for life if he called him a nigger or told him to go back to Africa. But no one gives a shit about the fan, Smart is potentially going to make a shitload of money and have a huge effect on an NBA franchise, that's why people are so much more focused on the athletes in this situation.

Because I'm not a minority I don't understand what it's like to be insulted or feel the want to inflict physical harm on someone? Is that what you're saying?
Imagine a scenario where the high school administration did nothing to the bullies and gave zero shits about your problems and you have a closer appreciation of how most minorities go through life.

I'm not justifying violence, but I can see why they'd think it was their only option. Also, in general, if you provoke someone then I don't think you should get to act surprised when it turns to violence.

Until someone steps forward and says what the fan says there's no reason for everyone to be pro-Smart. All we have is a he said she said situation.

And now video that confirms he said "piece of crap"
youtube
So essentially, everyone that labeled this fan a racist is well, a piece of crap.

You know, anything is possible with video editing.

I would like to see what leaks from Smarts camp, if anything. I do apologize for judging Orr, seemingly unfairly.

Lol, now what?

e: Holy shit, your response!

Unless something to refute the official statement from TTech and Jeff Orr comes out, we have to conclude it was only "piece of crap."

That sucks, but probably not much choice about it for the NCAA. They can't ignore an athlete pushing a fan. That's why the push is significant. It's not some confrontation on the street where a push wouldn't matter. The NCAA has to deal with it, and it becomes about the push instead of the (supposed) racism.

Now nothing is going to happen to the jackass fan.

If that's really all the guy said, Smart really needs to get things together. He's letting little things get into his head and he's completely torpedoed any chance OK State had of making the tournament at this point. He'll be out of the league within a few years if he keeps letting everything to get to him.

This thread: a bunch of perfectly rational white/not black people comment from the comfort of their homes and white priveledge/experience on what a black player should have done in a situation that they never and will never be able to relate to. Honestly, it is like people who know exactly whst theyd do when a gun in pointed to their heads. Some of you make me sick. Back in the day people use to spit on thr faces of blacks and their children and youd want them to just walk away? Let me spit on your face and your faces of your children. Please. I really want to see you turn the other cheek.

This world/country has become so racist that a black person can only act like an emotionless robot that only acts within expected boundaries and roles. Its extremely frustrating and i wish you guys would stop acting like you can even begin to relate because a little thread back in 2003 told me that many of you simply cannot.

I go out in public and i cant show any emotion. I cant get mad or else im a thug or angry black man. I cant use my street voice or else im unlearned and uncivilized. I cant even show off my intelligence because im not supposed to be. I really believed racism was over in my youth but the only real difference now is that it is just illegal.

Nothing wouldn please me greatly that black players boycotting sports of all kinds. Fuck sports. Fuck racism. Lets all become doctors and lawyers and scientists.

So, I was right in that Smart was venting some frustration and it wasn't based on the guy saying something horrific.
Honestly, "piece of crap" is far less vulgar than what I would have even guessed was yelled by the guy.

I'm sure Smart hears far worse several times a game including the N-word itself.

Until someone steps forward and says what the fan says there's no reason for everyone to be pro-Smart. All we have is a he said she said situation.

Nobody should be pro anything.

And that's terrible. I am glad mine ended the way it did and the school officials eventually did what they needed to do (even though it wasn't as quickly as I would have liked it to be). We should try and fix that, I don't think anyone would disagree with that.

Smart is not in middle school. He's already past that. At his level? With all the people around him? It should be even easier than my case to find support. Hundreds if not thousands of players have been in his exact same shoes.
that's not the way that works.

How about 'overly quick to judge'?

Marcus just has to take this L.

lol no we don't

Is this real life? I mean the dude came out and said he called him a 'piece of crap' and a video corroborates the story. Smart perhaps thought something much worse was said, I dunno. I bet he was just furious that he turned the ball over and essentially sealed the loss for his team. He's a tremendous player and competitor. I can't believe some of you are saying the only 'rational' thing that could have happened is racism. Uh, no? How about Smart was just super pissed at himself because of the previous play and let his emotions get the best of him. Happens to the best of players.

that's not the way that works.
I wouldn't say that people uncritically accepting the word of someone with a vested interest in the situation without corroborating evidence a "piece of crap," but hopefully it does temper their rush to judgement.

That said, is there any corroborating evidence from a source other than the fan and TTU that a slur wasn't used? Sure, there was the video, but a mic doesn't pick up everything.

In the end it all doesn't matter much anyway. Marcus Smart always seemed like a nice kid. He lost control of his emotions a few times recently and lashed out. It happens to everyone.

He pushed a guy. Nobody suffered any sort of serious injury or issue. It doesn't seem like it should have been such a big issue if the media hadn't pushed race issues into it.

Wow, can people stop being bringing up race? There is absolutely no evidence of any racial slur being thrown around.

People writing essays about the situation when they don't even have one ounce of idea what was said is so moronic.

Was this written before you saw that video where the guy said piece of crap?

You catch that 49ers game a few weeks ago? The "fans" certainly beat the media to the race issue.

You should probably read the whole thread before making this post since there's video evidence of the fan saying "You're a piece of crap" rather than anything racist.

But you seem to think black athletes have the right to use physical violence against those who taunt (again, it wasn't racist) them. Does it apply to white athletes too? Your user name is very fitting.

Why does there need to be evidence of something not happening when no one from OSU has said that it even happened?

Maybe.

Well, let's not act like Marcus Smart is the only person with a vested interest in the situation.

He should have never touched the guy and now that tape confirms it. All this other shit being drummed up in this thread is just laughable.

You're not reading my post. Some of the arguments involved both people assuming a racist thing was muttered and expecting him to suck that up.
