Old video game magazines: keep, toss, or sell?

I suddenly find myself burdened with about a half dozen large boxes of old magazines from my childhood and teen years. For the most part, they're back-issues of various VG publications: Nintendo Power, GameFan, EGM, Gamepro, PC Gamer, and more. I don't have the space to keep them (anymore), as I must also now deal with the storage of other personal belongings, and I don't remember enough about these magazines to make an informed decision. But being a collector of a great many things, I am loathe to throw away anything of potential present or future value. So, I ask...

Are they of any value whatsoever, or should I just put them out on the curb on trash day? Is there a market for old video game magazines, and how lucrative is it? Or, should I just keep them anyway?

I don't really think there is a market, but you should probably keep them if at all possible. I had hundreds at one point, but got rid of the majority of them between moves. I read the few I still have, and wish I had kept them all.

It's like comic books. There is a market for some video game magazines, but you probably don't have those.

Look on ebay and you'll see that most of the auctions don't get bid on, especially if they're for magazines from, oh, around 1995 or later.

Actually there is a good market for old magazines. Collectors will pay good money for a missing issue or two.

List them on eBay.

There's a good market for video game mags from the early 80's, those can often get $5 a piece and up. 16 bit gen mags, though, not really. Only in bulk deals will people be interested, although I haven't kept track of this stuff for quite a few years, maybe it's different now. I also have boxes and boxes full of late 80's/early 90's EGM, Video & Computer Games, Nintendo Power, Sega Visions, Gamefan, Next Generation and so on, which I've thought about chucking more than once. But I didn't, and you shouldn't, either. It may seem like a big waste, but you WILL wish you didn't chuck them someday. Go in with a couple friends on a storage space and stash 'em in there.

You wouldn't happen to remember if there are any of the old ones with articles / previews / reviews of old Sonic games, would you? I use them for my site, Secrets of Sonic Team, which shows old prototype pictures from the old magazines. It'd be great if you could do some scans :)

EDGE, Nintendo Power and the like seem to be the magazine of choice. The problem with Magazines is that they're so damn heavy, so postage is a bitch. If they're willing to pay for it, go ahead.

Yeah, ebay is packed with auctions for Nintendo Power, Edge and Retro Gamer -- the latter two from the Britons, of course. Everyone kept their Nintendo Powers, apparently.

I just got done packing 36 boxes of magazines so I shouldn't talk, but I do want to complete Gamefan someday...

i have a shitload of old EGMs, Nextgens, NinPowers, Gamefans and UGP's all boxed up in the garage. For some reason i can't force myself to throw them out. Shipping costs would probably be a biotch, otherwise i'd send them off to some Gaf'ers.

I used to have a large stack of 1990-1994 EGM magazines in 1998 I decided to give them away because they were taking up too much space and I did not think there would be a market for them.:( I could have made a killing on Ebay with those old magazines I have seen individual classic mags going for at least $10.00 on Ebay.

I got EGM's and Gamepro's starting from the mag covering Battletoads for NES. I've them all in a box somewhere. A good 10 year of mags. I'll keep them for the time being. Maybe give them to a video game museum...in the FUTURE!

I save them all. I have a couple of EGM's from 1992. I sometimes read them in the bathroom for kicks. EGM used to be 300+ pages every month.

I have every single OPM ever made.
