I can't believe people think Olive Garden is Italian. Taco Bell is more Mexican than Olive Garden is Italian, if that makes any sense.

ok but I don't have all the preservatives and chemical flavor enhancers that make those special

Trust me even if you fuck up your attempt at cheese biscuits they're still AMAZING because they're still buttery balls of cheesy dough. I've never had a bad homemade cheese biscuit.

Yeah, but are Red Lobster's version even authentic. I can't believe people actually think their Cheddar Bay biscuits are real. Try some authentic Cheddar Bay biscuits you dumb Americans.

Can't lie, they had my interest when they said it had prosciutto and aioli.

Not enough to actually go to Olive Garden, but they have my interest.

Somehow they are fairly popular in St. Louis, even though we are home to a pretty decent sized Italian community and there are small Italian restaurants everywhere, not just the Italian part of town.

So why do people go to Olive Garden instead? It's like when I lived in Florida, you'd see people go to Red Lobster

Pretty much anything that's in a chain isn't authentic. Earlier this year people got really defensive when someone pointed out how completely foreign stuff like sesame chicken is to actual Chinese cuisine.

Most metro areas smaller than 1 million don't have many authentic restaurants. Small towns in the US only get chains pretty much.

Some -- no, a lot of people -- just don't know squat about good food and embrace the "safety" of these cookie cutter chains.

Pretty sure all of these Chotchkie-style generic family restaurants are going down hill. Who the hell has the resources nowadays to spend $20 on lunch everyday?

Me and the wife were talking about some of the restaurant closures that have happened lately (here in Southern Ontario) and figured that more and more people would rather not spend $120 for a dinner for four (for a mediocre experience) and rather spend half that for an 8-person dinner party at their own homes.

I don't think it's strictly cost as much as those 'fast casual' places with a narrow focus (burgers, burritos, etc) are much more appealing at that price level.

Really wish we had an olive garden in my town. Sad as it is... the local italian joints are *horrible*. I mean, one of them has downright the worst food I've ever had, and charges you 30 bucks for it.

Olive Garden is horrible. Terrible menu, horrible food. They've been going on this "salad and bread sticks" schtick for 15 years. Their salad is disgusting. The bread sticks are buttery, salty, and garlicky, so sure, they taste fine. But you can't sell a goddam restaurant on bread sticks.

this

also their food isn't exactly great. same goes to the massively overrated cheesecake factory

Nope. Cheesecake Factory is the best of the major national chain restaurants. This doesn't make it good but i think it's still the best of the major chains.

For most over-rated major national chain... I think I gotta go with PF Changs. PF Changs is horrible, it's expensive and their food is sickening garbage. 5 - 10 years ago I would have said that Outback is the most over-rated of the big chains, but now people (at least around me) now properly perceive Outback as being "slightly higher end Chili's." Or, Chilis + $5.

Their issue isn't a lack of variety in their menu, it's that everything on their menu is terrible. There's pretty much no reason to go to Olive Garden unless you're given an gift card.

If you have to eat chain Italian food, try Ccarrabba's. It's actually decent and serve actual Italian food.

I used to think the same but came away disappointed last time...then again it was my first and only time ordering a lunch item from there (a panini).

The last two times I've gone to Olive Garden since 2009 were because of that and a family get together with non-foodies.

I can't so chain sit down food anymore. If I'm sitting down somewhere, I might as well get good food. If I want shitty food, I might as well go some place cheaper and faster.

Not even then, since you can use the giftcard at any Darden restaurant. I'd go to LongHorn Steakhouse, Red Lobster, Bahama Breeze, or Seasons 52 way before I'd set foot in an Olive Garden.

Their dinner stuff has been good and I never have time to go out at lunch, so I have no clue about that. It's the best Italian chain I've been too so far, since the rest ends seems to either be Olive Garden or fast food chains like Piada which too bad, but not that great either.

Well, that'll be good to remember if I ever end up with one. I got sick the last time I ate at Olive Garden.

That picture looks nothing like the red lobster biscuits. These "make your own *insert popular restaurant thing here* at home!" recipes are always spectacular failures and this is no exception.
I've had variations of this using bisquick and the are quite good. Maybe not precisely the same, but they capture the idea, which is basically a cheesy herb biscuit.

Too late, ordered the mix :lol

no matter how good they are, I'll probably only have a few. normally a pretty healthy eater.

I always get the chicken alfredo with pasta fagioli (and breadsticks of course). Price has gone up a bit over the years though. :(
