On DICE's motive behind featuring the Harlem Hellfighters in BF1 [Added DICE Comment]

It turns my stomach. Just flat out the most offensive game I've ever seen.

I can name family members that died in this conflict, wept at the pictures and accounts of the dead and maimed that experienced this hell, was taught all the horrors of it from primary school, through my whole life, it's only ever been a symbol of the folly of war, the worst, most black and shameful era of British and European history. I've been to the actual battlefields and mass graves across Europe, held the minutes silence without fail every rememberence day my entire life, for as long as I could understand the meaning of it.

There was no glory in this war. No thrilling action or daring do, no heroes and villains, this was mass murder, a scar on the history of our species, and every single person involved in it was a victim.

This trailer, the entire concept of this game, makes me feel physically sick, and just so fucking angry.

How fucking dare anyone make a game like this about the Harlem Hellfighters.

I don't know what's worse, the sick fucking emotionless, greedy cunts that would seriously exploit this horror of an industrialised massacre, or the ignorant, soulless bastards that will give them money and enjoy it.

Anyone involved in this, or seriously think of buying this, should be ashamed of themselves.

I can't wait to rejig this one for this year's E3.

Where are you seeing this? Cant say I saw any talk like that in the reveal thread.

There was a post from someone to the tune of "why is a black guy on the cover? most soldiers in WWI were white" but that's all I saw.

There was a bizarre "his face looks like a modern black man, not a WWI black man"-esque post, too, though.

Because we don't yet live in a world where you can "just" have a black person on the cover.

Or maybe because people needlessly complicate things by questioning motives behind everything. Trying to be the next person to "shine" on their internet soapbox thus creating a world that you can't "just" have a black person on the cover.

Are people really making fun of that other guy's glorifying war disgusts me post from the other thread? really?

He has a good point (though he should extend it to all war games not just ww1 era )

I'm going to edit DICE's comments into the OP: http://venturebeat.com/2016/05/06/ea-dices-lead-designer-answers-our-questions-about-battlefield-1/

VentureBeat said:
GamesBeat: The character you have on the front of the promotional stuff you were showing, the guy in the cape with the club and stuff, why that particular character?

Berlin: We thought it was a cool image for the cover. When we set out on this game, we wanted to depict not just the common view of what the war was like. We wanted to challenge some preconceptions. We want to delve into some of the unknowns of World War One. Maybe people don’t know that this person fought or that person fought, that this army was involved. We’re stretching out and bringing all those stories into the game. But I can’t go into any specific details as far as which armies or characters we’re depicting at this point.

GamesBeat: You’re talking about revealing sides of the war that people don’t necessarily know about. A lot of people have made note of the fact that your cover character is black, even though obviously black people fought in World War One. For you guys, was that a conscious decision, an opportunity to show that there was more breadth to this war than people know about?

Berlin: That’s the thing. People don’t know that this was the case. We want to show diversity in the game. That’s been a key goal. You can see in the trailer that there’s a Bedouin woman warrior on a horse. She’s a playable character in the single-player campaign.

An American on the cover is weird to me. A black person on the cover? It doesn't matter to me. As far as I remember, WWI was a conflict between nations, not races, so I care more about the nationality than the race.

The reveal thread seemed to rightfully being about the weird ass oo-rah tone of the trailer rather than anything about the cover character.

How is this different than any other game about war?

pre-re-pre-ordered

I really hope they nail the campaign in this game. As I said before the Battlefield campaigns have been less than forgettable. Everything seems interesting so far so I'll keep my eye on it. Can't wait for E3 to see more on the MP.

Yes, because he handled his argument horrifically. It was essentially the most self-centered, close minded stance you could take on the situation.

I mean I could see pandering being a possibility but I don't really give a fuck, anything other than playing a white dude for the umpteenth time is cool in my book.

Not really exclusive to what the comment you're quoting is saying.

Thanks, I try to be the change I want to see.

That is terrifying.

Putting an American on the cover of a WW1 game is a joke, regardless of race. It would be like putting a Russian on the cover of a Pacific theater ww2 game. In fact, WW1 was so spread out and covered so much territory you could have put almost anybody but an American on the cover and it would have worked. Ottoman Turks, Russians, Congolese... almost anyone.

Though I suppose we should be more worried about DICE managing to create a functioning game for once as opposed to their embarrassing pandering to an American audience.

This is actually the first CoD/BF/MoH annualized fps that has piqued my interest and I'm definitely keeping it on my radar.

If he was disgusted about the glorification of the war then maybe he would have had something resembling a point, but he was angry that a WW1 game even existed. Which means his post had the discussion value of a long, wet fart.

I actually thought he was french at first.

Like the Mafia 3 guy, I would've never known he was black if people didn't point it out but it was harder to tell in BF1.

I don't see a big issue with having a PoC as a protagonist. hopefully it'll open the floodgates for more perspectives in war.

edit: i dont know anything about WW1

Maybe I'm not following, but what in particular is a bad decision?

Nevermind me. I'm just frustrated with the setting and design decisions DICE made with BF1. Im over WW1/2 early war setting. Was hoping for a future setting or something different and new. Just more of the same from 12 years ago or so. Ugh.

I think it's cool. There's a lot of interesting stuff about WWI that a lot of people don't know. In fact, the people that I've talked to over the years seem to know so little about WWI that they take facts from WWII and lend them to WWI.

Harlem Hellfighters are cool, but the box art is generic as all fuck. Not even gonna go into how weird it is to give Americans centre stage for a World War 1 game.

No problem with Harlem Hellfighters being on the cover, but it would be cool to have country specific covers too as special editions or something. To the UK, Australia, NZ, Canada, France etc. who were in it from the start, WWI has a huge place in the 'national psyche'. Every one of these countries has a unique 'fighting man' legend associated with the great war, there's a lot of cool content they could make around this. Not to diminish their contribution - 2 million Americans fought in the war, but the US only formally entered the actual fighting in 1917, so to audiences outside of the US, America is not really associated with WWI.

9/10. Brilliant. Will pilfer and re-use come E3.

I think it's cool, its hard to make WW1/2 shooters interesting with the weapons you have to deal with. Go for a more interesting part of the history than another soldier fighting the main army everyone already knows about.

It has begun!

This would be a great idea imo.

The pandering with the cover is pretty obvious, but I like that the campaign will have a lot of different characters. My main issue is that they're apparently putting the Americans at centre stage even though they only joined the war at the very end.

I think DICE really, really gets it with this one. It would have been so easy to add another WW game that basically is blind to all except the Western Front and the white Americans who fought there, but instead decided to pay homage to a lot of the other fronts and faces that seldom see representation in media.

Not only is that commendable, the game very much benefits too. It looks great, varied, and more representative of the global character of the war. It's the first Battlefield title that has piqued my interest in many years.
