On G4 in 5 min. Icons:The Sega Dreamcast Story!!!

Seems crap so far.

Nothing I didn't already know....a few mild innaccuracies.....Stolar won't talk about why he got canned. Bleh.

Yeah, they just mentioned that he had some "trouble" with some of the Japanese higher-ups. I wanted details though.

Steve Kent was really the only redeeming part of the episode, though I think he kind of contributes to its schizophrenia. On one hand Stolar seems to want to say that it had a great 2 years, but from what Kent says the thing was dead in the water after about 8 months in America.

At the very least, they should have talked about how the system was cracked in summer 2000, and get some comments from 3rd parties about how/if piracy affected their outlook on the system.

It's a nice history summary, but if you were a hardcore gamer at the time then I don't think there was much to learn -- aside from the cool bit where Kent recounts his interview with Charles Bellfield. Didn't he break the "Dreamcast dead" story, and have Segafans flaming the hell out of him for an entire weekend?

Dam it, I just watched it, brought a smile back to my face. I remember opening early, crowds were crazy, news crews were doing interviews in my store - and I had to stock approx 400 Dreamcasts in my back stock room.

One of the very few good memories while working at Gamestop.. That's when working at Gamestop/EB was actually fun.

I feel sorry for all your Gamestop managers right now... Putting in 44+ hours and only getting paid for 40...

Here's the one story that keeps coming up regarding Stolar's departure...

There's lots of rumors as to why he quit, and my ex-Sega rep friend told me this one after speaking to Stolar at E3 after a few drinks. Evidentally, Stolar was talking to one of the higher ups at Sega of Japan about the Dreamcast launch date. The Japanese guy said that the "9-9-99" date was silly, and that Americans were basically too stupid to remember the date. Stolar responded with "Well, how about August 6, 1945 [US drops atom bomb on Hiroshima]?".

Whether it's true or not, it's pretty funny.

Easily my favourite urban gaming legend ever.

Steve Kent is bascially right though, the DC was dead in the water 8 months after the US release. Doesn't mean that the games sucked , but people basically made the choice to wait for the more powerful PS2. One thing that show did not touch on was the userbase, which I felt was the most enthusastic fanbase for a console this gen. Seemed every type of game, from any country could get some decent hype or sales on it. Nowadays the rich get theirs while the rest fight for scraps, and some userbase's ignore traditional console fare

I think Microsoft reconizes that as something important to their plans, as their PC related brand both helped, and hurt them. Sony ofcourse has a mainstream userbase, and all that means is the rich get richer. Nintendo has a higher percentage of long time console fans, traditional console stuff can do well with them.

Those icon shows never have anything new or interesting in them. Goddamn does G4 suck.

See, this is exactly what I hate about G4. In Cheat, Icons, and a few other shows they just tell you stuff you already know. I'm tired of it. This feels like a mainstream video game channel rather than a hardcore gamer's channel.

"NEW TIPS FOR HALO 2 ON XBOX LIVE!"

*stupid bitch says some witty comment*

"You'll never be stuck again!"

Next On....CHEAT.

The only shows that are actually useful to me are Screensavers, Judgement Day (sometimes), and this, Icons.

Remember GamePro TV hosted by J.D. Roth from "Fun House"???

Ahhh...memories.

G4 is crap.

When I imagined a gaming channel in the past I imagined game cartoons like Captain N and the occassional game movie like The Wizard. I also imagined a fanboy driven show (maybe call-in) with an X-BOT, N-Tard & S-Zombie (and maybe a Sega kid & PC nerd, just for laughs) and have them argue with each other non-stop for 2 hours every night. Make it like Jerry Springer level of comedy. I also imagined LIVE...AS IT HAPPENED...news from E3, GDC, TGS and whatever else was going on at the time...I mean like if there was a new sudden announcement in the world of gaming that they'd cut in like as if the president had been assassinated and have some nerd screaming: "MEGATON...MEGATON!!!" when it did. HA HA HA! Then I'd want like live tournements like as if they were sporting events. Celebraties not only playing but announcing games and adding MST3000-like comments which really is a big part of gaming. Interviews, news, histories would be cool too, but lay off the reviews...too many bought opinions. Award shows...about games...not about silly celebrities trying to cash in on the new trend and revamp their dying carreers...I want an award show with industry people and gamers...not paid advertisers hyping up shit that has lil' or nothing to do with the real gaming culture. One can dream...

I'M JD ROTH
AND I'M BRENNAN HOWARD
AND THIS IS GAMEPRO MOTHERFUCKING TV!

I used to get up at 6:00AM on Saturday mornings to watch that show. I remember when they showed footage of the Neo Geo I JUST ABOUT SHIT MYSELF and I was running around the house going "OHHHH!!! OHHHh!!!!!! NEOGEO!!! THE FUTURE IS NOW, MEGA SHOCK GO!"

Unfortunately Brennan made some comment like "I want a higher paycheck, because I want a Neo Geo!" and that made me think "Well, he's on TV and is probably rich, so me and my paper route are probably fucked. Oh well, back to NES"

:lol Awesome post.

It's so fashionable to rag on G4, but I think it's got mostly good programming.

The Screen Savers has some decent moments, but it's nothing compared to what it was. I have no real need for Icons repeats now that I've downloaded most of the episodes. Filter and Cheat is watchable...with mute on. Hmm, yep, that's about it...

Here's a less glamorous rumor:

In an interview, Bernie said that SOA's DC launch would be more successful than SOJ's. Said something like the Americans know how to do it properly and that Sega was founded by Americans.

Then he was shitcanned before US launch.

Well, that's television for you. There will never be a "hardcore gamer's channel" due to the simple fact that there aren't nearly enough of us to comprise a viewing audience capable of supporting a television network.
