Once-hyped games that are now completely forgotten

I wouldn't agree with this. GT5 sold over 10 million copies, was one of the most post-launch supported games of all time, constant online population, and was used for competition for several years.

Only fanboys in disguise could put GT in this thread.

Nonsense.

Brute Force was hyped beyond belief as the next Halo. Luckily, I rented it and never bought.

Too Human. Too much hype. It was going to be a trilogy, right? The ice skating looking fighting engine blew my mind.

Haze.
Black.

Perfect Dark Zero was hyped as a system seller. Craziness.

A lot of good answers here. Mine:
- Spore
- Brink
- RAGE
- Daikatana (well, we still remember how bad the game is)
- Enter the Matrix
- Playstation All-Stars (that ad was amazing, didn't liked the "only special attack kills")
- Perfect Dark Zero (sadly, since I loved the first on N64)
- Red Steel
- The Conduit (was supposed to be the Halo/Call of Duty of the Wii.)

If the longest 30 minutes of an E3 press conference ever counts as "hype" then:

Seriously, wasn't Book of Spells supposed to be the first of many Wonderbook titles? Did any of the others even come out?

I think they did.
I've seen one that's about dinosaurs and I think there is anothe harry potter inspired one (about making potions).

But then again, I don't know if I'd consider the biggest time waste at E3 since the Kinect live demos to be "hype"

How can all of you forget the infamous return of......Medal Of Honor!, real Tier1 killas
Worked on this game son!, they even have a map of Bin Laden compound, EA will finally bring down COD! Wooooo....

Yeah remember that?

I still drink to forget Warfighter, what may have been the single most generic and soulless video game I've ever played.

Nonsense.

To be fair, GT6 really is a game that somehow got forgotten. But I don't think it had a particular strong hype before release. I'm sure it still sold plenty of copies, but it's not discussed much. GT5 doesn't fit at all, though.

Stop it, Black is still amazing!

However the creator of Black made a new game late last gen to, they even used that to
Sell it lol, turned out to be ass grease!, bet you dont even remember it lol.

wtf was Haze though, Sony paying of all people Ubi to make a fps exclusive was pathetic, atleast get Crytek to do a game like Haze.

OK I also loved this game. I don't know what's wrong with me, I tend to have a blast with games that get hate. Then again I played it entirely co-op with a XBL friend, which made it more enjoyable.
As a followup to Perfect Dark, it was fucking attrocious:

- Boring-ass MP
- Awful graphics (oh, but the walls look so cool, lawl)
- Ruined Joanna Dark as a character
- Lame supporting cast
- Shockingly awful story with perhaps one of the lamest plot twists in the history of AAA gaming
- Level design so bad they had to put blue arrows on the ground to tell you where to go
- Boring, pointless mission objectives

Wow, I worked on many of these games. :(

PR/marketing for:
Tao Feng
Blinx
Brute Force (and a tiny bit of VO)
Nightcaster
Azurik

You're welcome for the over hype?

QA for:
Apocalypse

Agreed. Didn't even replayed a mission once. The "soul" of Perfect Dark wasn't there, at all.

VF4? That game was a huge hit in my country. Most of my friends got introduced to VF with that game.

And VF3 was the most popular arcade in Japan for years. Visually speaking it also made a massive splash since it took a full generation before consoles actually were able to catch up to it (VF3 was released in the same year as the N64).

Knack? Hyped?... I dunno... I'd agree with forgotten though.

Yea, Virtua Fighter didn't really decline steeply until VF5. I think a combination of not getting Final Tuned, and VF5's presentation being goofy as hell are most to blame.

Hellgate: London.

I remember seeing full cover images depicting the cover art and even huge coverage at TGS... and then immediately feeling 'blah' when I played the game. The same happened to Marvel Heroes.

Poor David Brevik, he'll probably never top his (best) creation, Diablo II.

inb4 the hate. I hope he does.

2007 was one of the best years for gaming ever and I still wasted my money on Hellgate: London due to the hype. I don't know if I could even take an hour of it before I uninstalled it due to game-breaking bugs and crashes.

Same deal with Titanfall.

Why do people always use these kinds of threads as a space to shit on popular games?

Quite a few posters will use essentially any thread to either gush about something they like, or shit on something they don't. Certain threads are simply more compatible than others for this.

The concept art for this game was hyping people, but then they released those really early beta screenshots...and the game ended up with a terrible camera...well..

Some people are surprised it got a 3DS spin-off and a Sequel as it did.

Huxley.

Finally came out in beta form in 2010 as a game not at all what they advertised, then quickly shoveled under the rug and never fully released.

I can't explain how hyped I was when this game was first getting coverage. An insane cross-platform MMOFPS with a fully developed world. What a fucking joke.

Has Jade Empire been mentioned?

It has, but the last time was about 2hrs ago, so I wouldn't blame you for forgetting about it again in that time window. :P

This is a great suggestion. I remember hearing so much about this, and I don't even recall when it stopped. It just suddenly ceased existing.

Aw man. Great answer. I remember Huxley being hyped way hard in magazines. I was really looking forward to it and then completely forgot about it.

Holy shit Tao Feng. Good job, I actually got really excited for that game. When I talk to people about this game now they have no idea what the fuck I'm talking about.

The sequel/spin-off wasn't surprising at all considering how well the first one sold.

In they heyday of the RTS, a hugely anticipated Star Wars strategy game was released:

Everyone then forgot about it because it was awful, and went back to AOE2, Starcraft and Red Alert.
