Once-hyped games that are now completely forgotten

Watch Dogs? Titanfall? GTA V?

Dantes Inferno
(went from superbowl commercial to nothing)

Playstation All Stars
(probably one of the biggest hyped flops of last gen)

Too Human
(supposed to be an epic trilogy, one and done lol)

Blue Dragon
(hyped as one of the 360s exclusive JRPGs, nobody cared about it)

Some of the replies in here are hilarious, I mean Titanfall? Watch Dogs?! and even Gran Turismo 5?!! Man if anything is forgotten it's gotta be Shadowrun

I remember all the hype that surounded Will Wright's Spore. It was crazy ... even the NYTimes and the german Der Spiegel wrote about it ...

I remember a LOT of hype about a game called "BLACK" and after it came out I don't remember hearing about it ever again.

It was great and received positive reviews. It was made my Criterion, so after they finished Black they went on to make 'Burnout Paradise' then later, the next gen Need For Speed.

The Daikatana team was then trying to create a new, more impressive demo for E3 that year. Last minute changes to the level design led to a demo that could only run at about 12 frames per second, far less than the 30 frames per second that was considered a minimum for first person shooters

12 FPS? I need to find a video on this.

"Games you dislike that had a lot of hype and sold moderately well"

Its hard to remember stuff that's forgotten unless its a pet favorite. I always thought condition zero was a weird sort of footnote to such a popular FPS. It was pretty much ran over by Source.

If anything, Shadowrun had anti-hype leading up to its release, so that doesn't work either.

I still remember the insane amount of hype this game got and the full-stories devoted to it in Gaming Mags (much of it due to the fact that one of the girls in the game would be appearing in playboy).

Its apparently so forgotten now that the LttP thread I made it about barely got any responses.

I think I have a physical copy of this hidden away in storage. Cant remember if mine is PS2 or Xbox.

Ninety Nine Nights. It wasn't the most hyped game ever, but it sure got a lot more attention then any other Dynasty Warrior's type game in it's early days. Pushed as one MS's early big attempts at appealing to Japanese gamers and for it's involvement from Tetsuya Mizuguchi.

By the time it came out in America no one gave a damn as it was clear it was just another (very good looking) Dynasty Warrior's clone with nothing remarkable about it.

It did get a sequel that no one cared about, not even MS as it brushed it off to Konami. The meme from E3 about the game is more memorable then the sequel.

Wait, er... What was that Gears of War prequel thingy... I've forgotten the name of it...

Judgement. And I wouldn't really say there was a lot of hype around it. Most people were like "is this game really necessary?"

I remember a LOT of hype about a game called "BLACK" and after it came out I don't remember hearing about it ever again.

People liked it. Only reason it isn't really talked about anymore is because there was never a follow-up and it's been such a long time.

You serious? No one gave a shit about Warfighter, let alone was there hype for it. And with Beyond and Noire there was plenty of interest in these games well after launch.

This game was such a disaster. And Im sure others know more details than me but from what I understand it pretty much ended Romero's solo developing career didnt it? I thought I read something recently about him attempting a kickstarter tho....

Edit: not sure it really qualifies as "totally forgotten" but it certainly qualifies as a hyped up game that bombed. If anything, its still remembered precisely bc its one of the most hyped games with high expectations (due to Romeros pedigree with helping develop the Doom series) that was an all time bomb.

Rage
The Last Remnant
King Of Fighters XII (KOF finally in HD... and it's basura!)
MK vs. DC
Blinx
Lost Planet (the whole series... it sucks that it fell off... but it needs a reboot... or another protagonist to re-introduce the series)
Chromehounds
Full Auto
Fuzion Frenzy
Joyride
Afrika
Small Arms
Perfect Dark Zero (not sure if this counts... i guess we still talk about it)
Ninety-Nine Nights
Lost Odyssey
Haze
Lair
MAG
Playstation Home

It's a shame about Warfighter. It's kind of terrible on consoles, but when it works it's a decent multiplayer game that's a bit different then it's contemporaries.

On PC it's much better, but no one cares about it.

I recall Unreal Championship 2 being hyped back in the day, but it ended up selling terribly and nobody talks about it anymore. I recall it being pretty fun actually, although it was definitely a departure from other Unreal games (melee weapons, third-person camera).

I also recall The Outfit being hyped around the launch of the Xbox 360, but nobody remembers it either.

I dont agree its terrible on console at all. The SP campaign is solid and a lot of fun in co-op.

It also definitely doesnt fit this discussion bc there was zero hype.

No matter what platform you play it on, it's still a soul eater with multiplayer map design thats relies on nothing but choke points. You win matches by getting to areas first and totally surpressing the other team. It's boring as hell.

Titanfall, Spore, Brink, RAGE, Star Wars: The Old Republic, Hellgate London.

Most were hyped by the media, so I kinda see a pattern here.

Spore with its DRM craziness and massive pushback from consumers and critics alike after it came out pretty much fell out of nearly everyone's consciousness a year later.

Similar story is likely to happen with the latest SimCity for same reasons.

Here we go:

That's funny, because I was just about to add this one, which had hype in JRPG circles at the time:

That's actually quite the opposite: Otogi Myth of Demons and Otogi II Immortal Warriors are both underrated games. I don't even remember seeing advertisements for them. They were praised by both the press and gamers, but there was no hype for them.

I enjoyed the first game quite a lot, never played the second, but I had forgotten all about both until seeing that post. Wish these had gotten ported, pretty sure they were never made compatible with the 360.

I'd say Brink. I had such high expectations for it and it launched silently before dying.

I don't really see how Titanfall can be summoned in this thread. I'd argue it's the best game released so far this year, and it's a solid title for playing casually.

The reason saying Titanfall is stupid is because there will be a Titanfall 2. The franchise isn't going anywhere.

Watch dogs? Gta? Am I in some fantasy land?
