One month from today: BioShock Infinite

I'm getting this on PC but what are the benefits of using keyboard and mouse apart from more precise aiming? I feel like this is one of those games I need to hook up to the big screen and can't really use a kb/m then. I'm not losing much if I use my 360 controller right?

let's "socialize" some more Andrew.

about all the things we're going to do in this wide world of Columbia

like tossing dudes off roofs and skyhooking into someone's eye socket. oh fuck yea

There's nothing wrong with Derrick. His thoughts do engender constructive criticism, and it's important that we fairly evaluate things.

Had we all just glibly lapped up BioShock, would the team at Irrational Games had the proper "push" to improve upon its faults with Infinite?

Probably wouldnt have had enough incentive to make 1999 mode that's for sure.

Every game still needs a "Derrick" mode though. =P

It's a matter of preference. The game's been optimized for both configurations.

The Skyhook is the new wrench.

The finishers you can do with that thing give Killzone a run for it's money. No horseshit.

i will not follow up on this statement by watching videos!

I just hope the finishers are natural and not obtrusive, last thing I need is another QTE game :P

Derrick has a tendency to be just as glib as the fanboys though. I've seen him call enough widely praised games "bad" just because they fell short of his expectations, Bioshock being a prime example. It's fine to place more important on some aspects of games than others (like mechanics), but just because a game doesn't deliver on the legacy of the series doesn't completely negate its strengths. I think people would be more willing to engage him if he wasn't as extreme as the enthusiasts.

No QTEs from what Ive seen in combat. I dont think they would do that to us. Irrational really seems like a developer that listens to its fans and really, the fans like us in a forum like this provide the best most critical opinions out there and they fucking listen. As evidenced by that whole aiming scenario with UC3. I mean, if we didnt stir up a hornets nest, that shit would never have been altered. That was all GAF really. We're considered a minority but I believe we have a much stronger voice than many in the industry want to admit.

Andrew, you seem to have as good of an idea of how this game will play and such as anybody here. Have you seen any interviews or footage that go into detail about the progression and level design? I'm just wondering how similar it is to the other BioShock games so I can get something of a feel for it before I play it.

I'll concede this.

I find it baffling when someone dismisses something because it doesn't live up to the immense hype they've built up for the title. How can one analyze and measure someone's preconceived notions?

I'd liken Derrick01 to Devin Faraci in that their vitriol is from a place of passion, not malice. You don't concur with everything they say, but you can respect their intentions.

Do what I call the solar punt: Hit fools with Bucking Bronco then quick-swap to the Charge vigor and send them to the moon.

I should probably play Bioshock 2. I bought it at launch never got it running due to issues with the gflw patching system.

I wonder if any of that is improved.

GFWL remains shit.

Alec Meer over at RPS actually recently wrote an article on trying to get Minerva's Den to work with the Steam version of Bioshock 2:

http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2013/03/05/a-brief-moment-of-perverse-gratitude-to-gfwl/#more-144350

He ran into a bit of trouble. When I tried it out way back when my experience wasn't quite that bad, but rest assured that GFWL is a tragic thing.

Still well-worth going through it to play Minerva's Den.

In my blind hype of 1999 mode (which better fucken deliver) and don't really know anything about this game.

Can I expect a similar type of game as Bio/System Shock?

Well, my hype has officially crossed the line into dangerous territory. Last night I had a dream that I ran into Ken Levine and had a big old chat with him about Bioshock Infinite.

The only downside was when I asked him about 1999 mode he was cagey and admitted he didn't actually have much to do with the difficulty balancing.

I never thought I'd be one of "those" people, literally dreaming about game designers. This is a new low for me...

Define progression in a game like this. Do you mean with skills or characters or what?

There are plenty of interviews out there which show levels but nothing that I have seen that give you a sense of progression (and thats probably for the better for spoiler purposes). From what I've witnessed, the world is obviously more open compared to its predecessors because you arent stuck in tubes and rooms in under the ocean. It's not like there were underwater Skyhooks in Bio1/2. The sense of freedom of movement in this game is much greater.

Okay, you pretty much told me what I wanted to know. Thanks.

Wonder how this game will hand the more open environments. Open doesn't always mean better, but it could be something truly special if they can pull it off.

Well I think/hope it's definitely gonna be open, but contained, kinda like an Arkham Asylum or something. And I think it'll be the most beautiful open, yet contained world yet.

Something like Arkham Asylum would be very interesting. Could be very cool to go back through environments previously visited and seeing them decay as the game goes along. If that's what this game is attempting, of course.

I might just be talking out my ass though because I just finished Tomb Raider and started playing Arkham Asylum again because of the previous purchase. Ive got metroidvania and kinda half assed metroidvania on the brain at the moment.

Man, I just realized.

Columbia was shown in the 1893 World's Fair Exposition.

At the same place, Nikola Tesla was granted to use his invention: Alternate Current (against the wishes the jerk Edison).

What if... HE'S IN THE GAME?! ZOMG, best game evah.

If there's one thing I'd travel to the past for, it would be to meet Tesla.

Haha, it's cool. I know it's something that we won't really see until we're playing the game.

I hope in the main thread people can spoiler tag major locations. One of the best part of the Bioshock series experience is exploring and being surprised by the stunningly realized universe and location

Hai Andrew what's Songbird

I dunno, but watching those clips of it and seeing that
its actually got a fist and fingers and shit is really disturbing. Like on a Big Daddy level. Like that thing is a fucking humanoid. A giant one. Who is under all of that?

Especially when they take you back to Rapture.

Songbird is Booker

but

Is Booker Songbird?

Mysteries abound.

You've encapsulated my thoughts.

Imagine if
we get small glimpses of what's underneath all of that gear. Will it appear human? Animalistic? Neither?

I can't even being to imagine. My thoughts on this whole thing are fucking infinite son.

With all the parallels between BioShock 1 and Infinite I hope
you get to become a Songbird.

Also, Booker supposedly has a scarred right eye and Songbird has a cracked right eye thing. Mean something plz.
