One Way Heroics | Don't look back

Got linked to this randomly in the Starbound preorder thread (thanks elyetis!), bought it that night and have made a couple of unsuccessful runs. Really enjoyable little disposable Roguelike experience.

Really like the feedback/advice corner thing, and the more quasi-roguelikes that come out with some sort of meta-progression between runs, the more I love that mechanic.

Toma recommended roguelike? /allmy1.99sandgreenlights

Just finished downloading... away I go.

Post some impressions later. :)

I've played a couple of rounds, only on easy yet though. It's certainly a nice game.

Yeah, me too, but there is so much more hidden here. Already beaten on easy with any char? I am currently still trying to beat it on easy with the Adventurer class.

Disposable? What do you mean? That sounds rather... negative :p

So, I played the Knight first, beat it on easy then switched to Swordmaster and beat it on easy on my first try (mythic longsword+2 helps), then proceeded to die a lot when I switched to Hunter. I did, however, find the Holy Lance Longinus, so that's something.

I kinda want to hold off on playing much more until the Steam release, though, so I won't have to repeat myself to earn achievements. I'm also hoping the overlay/screenshotting works in the Steam version... and that 16:9 gets patched in... but not holding my breath.

How are the servers handled, by the way? Are we playing on the same worlds as Japanese players? Will the DRM-free version be on the same worlds as the Steam version, or will the victory logs be reset?

No, I meant it as a positive. As in a single runthrough successful or not can be done in one sitting rather comfortably. Like it's not a huge commitment to start a game up, and I can safely fire it up while the baby is napping or I have some other relatively brief gaming window. This is a huge plus for me and one of the big draws indie games have had over industry games for me lately. Like, with Spelunky, I can already have died and failed the daily challenge in less time than it would take me to load into GTA V :)

I'm hooked, game hits all the right notes for me.

Completed the XGCONJ dimension on my third attempt.

Love the simplicity of the controls/coupled with the variety of item effects/character stats. Very similar in execution/feel to Shiren. Any chance we might see controller support in the future? Maybe I'll try a joyToKey setup later.

The ability to de-level in exchange for bonuses and maintaining baseline stats is a lot of fun as well. Gear seems difficult to maintain but otherwise appears fairly plentiful, along with often quite useful scrolls to buff gear. Managed to make a bow with 15% chance to snare on it.

Character abilities are fun as well with interesting balance mechanics. Very powerful but not without drawbacks (at least for swordmaster). Berserk makes you a juggernaut temporarily and then leaves you incredibly vulnerable and bash does a ton of dmg but really takes a toll on your weapon. Definitely looking forward to trying other classes out, have hunter and pirate opened so far.

Overall game seems quite polished so far with a crazy amount of content for a 1.99 title. Highly recommended for roguelike fans.

It plays just fine with a 360 controller out of the box. That's what I usually play with. What kind of controller are you using?

They're completely separate. There's no way to auto-translate stats and names of Japanese players on the leaderboards, so Smoking WOLF had to separate them. Also, the dimension seeds were handled differently in the JP version (phonetic sounds per character, rather than single letters [eg. kanaseyoba vs. ktwdvbof])

Ah good to know, didn't see anything in the options to indicate it and had simply neglected to try yet.

Worked perfectly for me out of the box as well.
I was thinking about that recently as well, what are some others you liked? Rogue Legacy is sort of the action platformer equivalent, but I had a hard time thinking of traditional roguelikes.
Sword of the Stars: The Pit has unlockable recipes that carry over in between playthroughs but you can easily cheat and wiki those. Dungeonmans, which should be out early next year, has lots of things that carry over in between runs but features more traditional roguelike gameplay. The dev has been doing amazing things with the Kickstarter funds too so it should be a fantastic release.

Edit: You guys should really tell your friends about this game, even if you think it might not be their thing. I demoed it for a buddy who I didn't think would be into it, at all, and he ended up picking it up.

You actually never have to climb any mountains, there is always at least a small path somewhere. But yeah some dangerous mob ( red cap skeleton etc ) and Adventurer is very weak ( I went with 5 vitality perk ), sure dash allow you to flee, but fleeing also mean you get little xp ( and that dimension make it even harder by not having a goddess shrine in those first 400km ( at least I didn't find one ).

And yeah could probably have beaten him without that fire effect on the weapon, could move fast enough to get some regen of life without him being able to hit me ( best time to move is when he use meditate, so you can avoid his next spell ), thought the more the fight last the more risk I had to get another ennemy to spawn and attack me.

Finally managed to beat that dimension with an adventurer as well. I was stocking up on healing items, had a 18 dmg weapon and was just duking it out in the end:

My first SS too!

Thanks, hope you will get and share those clarifications. ^ ^

Alright I had some other things to send Smoking WOLF today so I asked him about the damage calculations.

I was actually completely off in my guess!

It goes like this supposedly:

(Attack Pwr x Damage Reduction) - Armor = Damage to Player

He says that he really doesn't remember the exact reasoning at this point but that it was likely because he wanted to make Armor the more important stat.

If you have any other questions about the game system feel free to post them here.
Smoking WOLF is probably one of the most responsive developers I have ever worked with so it is extremely easy to get answers our of him!

Ah yes, I beat it with Knight. I'm trying Hunter out right now.

Wow that was fast, thanks. When you say dommage reduction in that formula, is it all source of dommage reduction ? like with my armor would it go : (Attack Pwr x 0.7*0.92*0.75*0.75) - ( 25+5 ) = Damage to Player ?

Nice to see it's so Wolf is so easy to talk to. ^ ^
Has anyone in this thread actually beat the final boss? That battle is one of my favorite events in any game ever at this point. Blew me away when I first figured it out!
Nop I'm probably taking my time too much, trying to beat the demon lord in first difficulty without using the vault, doing daily event, etc.. 21h playtime and I'm actually only at that point :
1386328782-heroics.jpg

( damn force user ! I now have a holy staff ( and every holy weapon I think actually ) so next time should be The one for him, even if it mean using the vault ).

What are the different trophies?

What are the different trophies?
Bronze is first difficulty, there is a circle/medal at the top if you did it without opening the vault, silver is second difficulty ( we can guess there is gold after that once you beat the third one ).

I don't know if it get different if you beat a difficulty in maniac mode ( stronger demon lord, no vault or goddess altar ) or the true/secret boss.

Goddamnit, so I need to beat it without the vault, huh?

The game sure isnt easy on us.

I'm actually pretty sure that I did it with the adventurer class only once and that was on your OSR4GBTR Dimension !

I can already see finishing without the vault being a big challenge on medium difficulty, I can't even imagine what it will be to do it on the hard one ( let alone in maniac mode ).

If anyone got advises for the force user class I definitly want you to share them !

I need to unlock them first, but I actually wanted to unlock all characters without paying for them. Is there any way to use force skills without the force user?

I am also missing the Pirate and the Bard. How do I hire someone?

I paid for most class, but :
- you can buy force skill to certain npcs ( don't remember the name )
- I don't think you can hire someone on first difficulty ( it's actually in the description "No Partners" ), with the exception of the charisma judge at the beginning ( need 4 in charm ) but I'm pretty sure that one doesn't count toward unlocking the bard.

Playism just posted this:

50% of the way to the Top 100!
Hi everyone,

We put One Way Heroics on Greenlight just 2 days ago, just prior to the recent batch of greenlights. Our hope was that we'd have a fighting chance in this all-new Greenlight battle.

What we didn't expect was the love we've gotten so far! In just two days on Greenlight, we're already 50% of the way to the Top 100! Thanks so much for all your votes! We can't wait until One Way Heroics is available on Steam for all of you to play.

Let's do this!

Good! Hopefully this thread helped a bit too. Definitely deserves to be on Steam and sell like hotcakes.

Hm, does strength affect bow damage? The description said is increases attack power.

But usually strength only affects melee combat in these games.

Edit: There is an extra dimension in the dimension menu (lowest one), which has an NPC teaching you some force powers in the first castle, but how can you have money at that point already? You cant sell items there..

Edit2: Anyone know how to remap controller buttons? I cant play with the standard configuration, confirm on square and cancel on x is making my head explode.

Good question about bow and str, it's true that bow don't have an attack value when you check them, but an aim value.

For that dimension the npc is usefull if you have the piggybank ( or something like that ) perk, which give you 2500 gold.

edit : great news about the greenlight

Ah, where to get that perk?

Also, I JUST noticed after 4-5 hours of playing that enemies have a level number over their head indicating their strength.

...

That sure makes things easier instead of attacking an enemy and then seeing it will two-hit-death me.

Edit: Lets see how this goes
R9hOpbm.png

Edit2: Most stupid death reason ever. I kept a flamable vial in my pocket when the demon lord attacked me and it exploded in my face. Sounds like Neogaf indeed.

Edit3: Trying the Hunter now, kinda random class to play since it heavily relies on you finding ammo, and if you dont... screw time.

Ended up buying this last night. This game is amazing. The music is incredible as well.

I feel guilty having paid only $2 for such a quality game.

Thanks for the heads up Toma!

You're welcome :)
Feel free to post again here if you have any questions or want to share some impressions. How far are you in atm? I am currently trying to do some non-vault runs on easy with the standard classes.

Oh and I also just noticed that the challenge dimensions change the different challenges each day. There is one today that doesnt allow for levelling up, but instead gives better items.

Today is:
- You can recruit the King (BHNML42)
- No level ups but better items (ETQFWO)
- Weapon Dealers right at the start (KEXFAQ)

I've only had the chance to play for about an hour before I went out last night.

Rolled a knight to start off with. Went with 2 strength perks and 1 vit perk. Made it to my 3rd savepoint. Went into some castle and got wrecked by a huge mob.

Not sure if it's better for me to start over with an item or keep going from my savepoint.

Someone pointed out in this thread about a skill used to identify items. Is that the only means of identifying?

Every time you find an item, there is a small chance to identify it automatically, so you basically have an auto chance to identify. There are also Indentification scrolls which sometimes can be bought from merchants, though they arent cheap at 500 each.

And so far I tend to start over once I died. If I understand correctly you dont get any more of those unlock points if you restart a saved game (but havent tested that thoroughly yet).

Wow, this ate up my afternoon.

Beat it twice already on Easy mode, once with a Knight and once more with a Traveler that lucked out with a great staff and a nuke spell.

Anybody have any idea what to do with the Dark Brotherhood? Don't wanna waste my hard earned hero points unlocking the class.

Kudos to the music too, it's nice and addicting!

Happy to see some new name here, the game really deserve more love ( even if I was unfaithful to it during the last two day, trying Starbound and frozen endzone ).

Tomorow I shall beat it with the Force user !

After 6-7 hours or so of trying to unlock it I gave in and bought it. You need to find the Dark Brotherhood ticket which I found ONCE, and then enter the DB with the ticket in the same dimension you found it in (which I found ONCE too... in another dimension). So if you dont take out the brotherhood ticket everytime or know a dimension with one... it might take a while.

Though if anyone is curious and needs one, if I remember correctly, the following dimension has a Dark Brotherhood:
Toma
Not even joking.

Speaking of which, as a Force user :
I know have defeated the demon lord at least once in easy with all class ( most with the vault, still need to work on that ! ), which made me unlock again something else :
The game just keep delivering content ( and challenge ) wise. :in love:

Haha. Awesome! How did you manage to finally beat it as force user?

I am currently still working on my non-vault easy runs. Finished Swordmaster, Knight and Adventurer so far.

Sadly nothing much to be proud of, took a decent weapon in my vault ( not some big holy weapon, just a decent sword with some upgrade ), a decent ring ( acc & crit + ) , 2 demon lord hearth ( +5 lvl when used ), full vit+ perk, and pretty much didn't use any spell, played it like a swordman.
It was mostly to know what it would unlock.. now the hard part of doing it without vault is still to be done. ^ ^;

edit: just did the first difficulty with bard without vault, only hunter and force user left !

Actually I think you just need to find the Dark Brotherhood. I unlocked it on my 3rd run and I didn't have a ticket or get in the door.

Topic seems dead... but for those of you who are still playing and want some nice seeds here you go:

S6SJPNAR - 49km Golem, 137km Holy Shrine
(Golems can drop Quality Whetstones)
VGM0PLJZ - 25km Holy Shrine (w/ weapon AND armor chest)
VLK001DY - 90km Fortune Teller (for Force User runs). There's also like 10 towns in the first 200km.
AEWUTAOW - This seed is crazy. 3 Big Towns right at the start. 115km
Dosey
(party member), 420km
Queen
(party member).

Interesting thing about
Dosey
(party member): (Big Spoiler)
She can make "Buddy Tablets" which you can use on the boss for some interesting dialogue.

Eh, its not really "dead" yet. These smaller Indie threads are rarely as active as other threads. Feel free to throw in other things and hints you notice about the game :)

You seem to have been playing it quite a lot, how far are you in?

Yeah, this is what a "normal" indie game thread tends to look like, Starbound and its massive thread is just here to skew your impression lol

Kind of want the game on Steam already, was an idiot and registered to playism with an oooold email, afraid I'll forget about the game and lose the Steam key with that.

Cant you just change the email address on their website/account settings or something?

I really liked the music from Misaki Shin, so I tracked him down. Turn out his Midi music is free.

http://guru2.nobody.jp/music/

All the in game songs are under "Original MIDIs". There are multiple albums. Just click on the floppy disk to download and track down the song that you like.

Edit: In game songs I found so far have the following Romanji Titles when you download them:

garden
inori
kazeyo
myoujou
speoleolody

Urg, no luck doing an hunter run without using the vault. Same with bard but on second difficulty.. thought that was mostly because of mistakes on my part.

Pretty far, this game is kinda addicting. Right now I'm trying to get all the party members so my results screen isn't filled with question marks. I keep generating random seeds until I get one that starts with like 3 Big Towns (talk to the Old Woman in the castle), since party members seem to spawn in Big Towns. Hardest thing I've done so far is reach
End of World
, but only on Normal and w/ Vault.

A few notes on random Seed generation:
I don't think you can get the Dark Brotherhood to appear until you're pretty far away form the starting location, but you CAN get some really early Holy Shrines (ie, 25km early). Interestingly enough, on the higher difficulty settings the Merchants can stock Dark Brotherhood items (Scrolls of Repair, Phalanx, Sword Saint). So if you got a super weapon about to break, run through a level that starts w/ 3 Big Towns w/ all the money perks and you should be able to find a Repair Scroll.

But what sucks really badly is the special event world seeds (like Journey with King). If you reinput the world seed after the event expires, the map will be the same but you won't get any special events.

But what sucks really badly is the special event world seeds (like Journey with King). If you reinput the world seed after the event expires, the map will be the same but you won't get any special events.

I think its actually kind of a cool concept because it makes these daily events rather special.

Edit: I gotta agree though that I was already thinking about how could it would be to just do random dimensions and accidentally stumbling over a random event dimension that has different abilities.

Got my first victory yesterday. Swordmaster no vault easy. Woulda had a Knight too, but I thought to myself "I can survive one more attack before I use awakening and heal". Spoiler alert: I couldn't.

Currently working on my Pirate easy no vault run.

Nice. Spoiler : you will die because of the same kind of mistake/overconfidence again, and again... at least I still do.
Currently working on my Pirate easy no vault run.
Pirate is my favorite class I think ( if you forget about OP hero class ), really strong starting weapon, great to destroy wall ( and treasure if needed ); only 'big' drawback is it's negative char, meaning it's really not good for partner. You almost always endup rich with that class.

Speaking of partner any tips about the partner we could get today on one of the event dimension, Dosey, especially about
when she transform ? I lost her to the darkness because I had to flee from other mobs, should we kill her ( for some loot I suppose ) or does keeping her alive long enough make her go back to normal. Or do we need a Buddy tablet maybe ?

I did read about the tablet somewhere but I forgot where it was, didnt try myself yet though.

Definitely seem to be progressing best with Force User so far, last run got all kinds of messed up when I accidentally attacked a Camping Soldier, from there on those dudes were coming after me in force. I was killed by a couple of them just as the Demon King was about to show up too, pity. This is a fun game.
