One of the biggest concerns about this generation of software was the rumored $59.99 price tag for games. Today we here at XBox 360 News have learned a nice piece of inside information. All first party Microsoft games should retail for the MSRP of $49.99. This does not include any third party titles but we expect them to also follow suit. This does not include any third party titles but we expect them to also follow suit.

I spoke to an XBox representative today that told me all titles that are directly published by MS should receive this price point. This includes such anticipated games as Perfect Dark Zero, Kameo, and of coruse Project Gotham Racing 3. I also learned that our story posted yesterday about backwards compatability was right on the money. He told me that 100% of all past XBox games would be compatible with the 360, of course you will have to have the HDD, but again I ask who is seriously going to purchase anything less than the Premium pack. Check back for more updates on your favorite console and remember where you heard this news first!

Yeah. We should all believe this "inside info" when all inside info had it pegged as one unit (as well as Ballmer himself back in April) AND it had the hard drive standard.

I'll believe this one when I see EB selling games for $49.99.

It could end up being like Sony selling their PS2 titles for $39.99 (with a few exceptions like God of War) while everyone else has a $49.99 MSRP.

All inside info pegged one hardware SKU?

Dude I don't even know any REALLY inside "insiders" and even I was 99% certain there was going to be two SKUs based on what I was hearing. I wrote about it numerous times...

Wait...$50 but retailers in Britain are taking preorders with games at ÂŁ40-ÂŁ45!! Bullshit...either something stinks with this news or MS are raping Europe with the price of software

Yep. I think the Euro raping has begun :(

Listen up guys! I've got some insider news. First party software SHOULD, I repeat, SHOULD(I know that saying SHOULD isn't completely binding and leaves some wiggle room, but software SHOULD) be 49.99! And even though I have nothing to back this up, third party software is going to fall in line. Or shall I say... SHOULD fall in line? Don't forget who was first to bring you this news... SHOULD it prove true!

Funny how everybody ignores the part of that claims X360 will be 100% backwards compatible. Kind of ruins the credibility of the whole story....as if being posted on an unknown website with an un-named source wasn't bad enough ;)

Two SKU's for games:

$49.99 for the standard version of the game

$59.99 for the special edition (ie more levels, vehicles, characters, etc)

Steve Ballmer in an interview in May of 2005, right around E3.

http://www.joystiq.com/entry/1234000597043723/

Ballmer: Right now we love our one configuration that we got in market for this Holiday.

Joystiq: So just one configuration is targeted for the Holiday release?

Ballmer: Yeah, given that we know we’re going to have to hustle to produce all that people are going to want, that kind of keeps life a lot simpler for the retailers. If you said, “Look we’re coming to market with three configurations, and we were in short supply, and we got the wrong mix of configurations,” it would just compound all the problems. We’re really quite excited about the proposition for having just the one configuration in market particularly for this holiday.

LOL. That's funny :D

If the majority of games stay $49.99 I will <3 MS once more. I don't mind spending a little more on the hardware (399) if this means software prices stay the same.

But, it ~should be 100% +/- some unknown, but purely speculative percentage.

Of course, the casuals don't apparently care about BC, according to Microsoft's marketing message.

I expect EA to charge $60 for games like Madden, but for the MOST part, Xbox 360 games to sell for $50. But that's just what I personally expect. But I'm hoping it happens.

EA, Activision will lead the $60 parade, just as they lead the $50 parade on the PSP.

But this is were Europeans will get screwed on pricing.
There's no way we're going to get games for 49.99 euros.

I thought all Gamecube, Xbox and PS2 games were priced 59.99 euros already in Europe? They are in the Netherlands.

Yep your right. I was just hoping for some parity for once.

And I won't be surprised if that actually happens. It'll probably be called Retard and Premium versions. :D
