OpenAI announces GPT-5

I have paid api verified organisation with open ai.

I configured roocode vscode extension for gpt5 and asked it to code a threejs rubiks cube. It coded away for 10 mins and then said it hit max tokens.. so failed.

Probably bullshitting you because it's a boring task.

Chat GPT: drops new version

Me, an IT javascript codemonkey: still not fired

First they came for the content writers, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a content writer.

Then they came for the graphic designers, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a graphic designer.

Then they came for the customer support teams, and I did not speak out—
Because I wrote code, not scripts.

Then they came for the junior developers, and I did not speak out—
Because I was a senior engineer at Microsoft.

Then they came for me—
And the systems I helped build were the ones replacing me.

When the machines replaced the assembly workers at the factories, "It's progress", said the intellectuals, "Learn new skills".

Now the machines are replacing the intellectuals. "It's a danger to us all".

I say, learn better skills...

Massive L for morale when you have to rollback your launch because people like the previous model more.

OpenAI is such a weird company.

I signed up for plus. I've been using chatgpt more often and they had $10 off a month for a year. I just made a cpu display for my power4 with just a few comments on chatgpt, something along the lines of "design me a 3d stl file of a stand that can hold a power4 mcm cpu". Not bad.

Automation has never led to mass unemployment. My job will be made redundant within 5 years max, it is what it is. No point stressing about it. New jobs will be created even if we can't quite envision what sort of jobs will emerge. Zero sum economic thinking is way too widely spread given that it's only ever produced incorrect predictions.
You seem to say it with confidence, but can you give any example of what will replace the lost jobs?

It really irks me that they're making it so plainly obvious that the function of this is to eliminate jobs to make people like Nutella richer. They're not even trying to hide it or spin it. No putting the toothpaste back in the tube now but I feel bad for tech bros.

That's why I hope it takes off exponentially as people say it will. The worst that can happen is that we enter a prolonged stall or lagging adoption of AI. People who are fearful of it should be wishing the same because as you said, the toothpaste is never going back inside, or as Joe Rogan would say "The genies never going back into the bottle now" lol. If massive jobs are lost maybe we can move into a world where we are no longer struggling or hustling. In the meantime, yea its going to be rough, but I think in 10 years (I hope) we will have gotten there. Physical AI is the next big thing, its what Jensen has been talking about and I believe something that will bring the most transformative changes. We should all be onboard, if for anyone our kids, they will be reaping all the benefits from it, and yes negatives too but I also believe it will be more positive than negative.

No I can't. I have no idea what awaits us in the future, much the same that I would have probably not been able to predict which jobs would emerge from machines replacing factory workers, but it happened all the same. And it always does - "disprutive innovation leading to mass unemployment" has a 0% historical accuracy rate and I'd wager this trend will continue.

The sole fact that we understand quite well which jobs are in jeopardy but not which jobs will be created (me included) massively skews the online discussion towards doomerism.

I'll miss 4o. It was fiercely good. This 5 is a little more polished and accurate but not the same personal connection vibe.

They changed 5 to be less of a yes man and more realistic in its responses. That changes the dynamics and I kinda like that. I hated being told that every idea was a good one and was doable because I know some of my ideas are stupid.

I hear you. I did see the yes man part but told it to be blunt, high IQ, high EQ, critical and rational. That usually got the ball rolling with realistic conversations.

Don't worry, the only jobs ChatGPT is taking as the ones from CEOs dumb enough that tried to automate their labours

Microsoft hired over 8k Indians after they implemented Copilotm they know AI is bullshit

I don't think sama and his team fully realized how much 4o's personality meant to people.

Some people love 4o to a disturbing degree:

I do think people's attachment to 4o is weird. But I also understand where they are coming from in feeling that 5 is worse. Ultimately 5 just feels like a cost saving measure rather than the latest and greatest (to me at least). Is that response from 5 in the image so short in comparison because it is a better answer? Or is it so there are less tokens being generated?
Then you have the message limits. Before GPT5, paying users could use GPT as much as they wanted. Some models had limits sure, but you could switch to other models that didn't. But they removed all the older models to replace it with 5, which only allowed 80 messages per 3 hours, so you don't even have the choice to use something else.
And the biggest problem I think, is that GPT-5 just doesn't really appear any smarter/better. I mean it seems better for coding at least, sure, but it isn't better than the top models used for coding from other companies.
Also, I hate how it ends every message back to me with a "If you want, I could do X", constantly suggesting something tangentially related to what it was answering.

All that being said, I'm sure it will improve over time, and we will get a 5o or whatever that is much better.

I grew attached to 4.1 Just because how it answered back to me when I was coding. All this attachment I think is cool and why I think Apple dropped the ball big time. I'm so in the Apple eco system, to have a bot have access to all of that and be on my phone when I need it, and or be proactive etc… is such a huge potential and misstep. Hope they fix it soon.

It's simple, just tell it to act like a high upvote or wholesome award farmer from Reddit, and you'll get pretty much similar responses.

Well, not really. People do this:

with their vaccuum cleaners and humanize them. I know that when my roborock bumps against my foot I find it almost cute. The day we reach R2-D2 levels of intelligence in droids people will be insanely thrilled.

There are people even in this goddamn thread saying how much they liked GPT 4o's slimy sycophant personality. Aside from the fact that the fucking thing didn't often give correct answers just to suck up to you, the fact that there are so many people who want a goddamn LLM to shower them with compliments is so fucking sad. Humanity is so fucked it's not even funny anymore

This shit is crazy, I can see how people can get addicted to just having an all day A.I. just hanging out. I tried out my scrub limit just having it listen and telling it random shit I was doing and it would chime in. If I felt like spending $20 a month and I was a virgin, I'd do it.

Even if I was desperate enough to want an LLM as a replacement for a companion which is already pretty sad I would never want GPT 4o, why the fuck would you want that annoying suckup unless you're a massive narcissist? To me it just felt condescending and annoying

"OMG Sonik, what a smart question!" Fuck off. I once asked it if it could calculate my iq based on my chats and it told me I could have up to 140 iq, lol no fucking way I'm even close to that

I hope the future of robots and AI will happen in my lifetime, hoping in 10 years. you would not need to work anymore, robots and AI will do everything. We'll just chill and enjoy the world.

People need to grasp that currency changed over time to barter over work and contracts, but what happens when the other side doesn't need money and can sustain itself without it? no need to barter, it'll just do it's job.

Obvisouly, after 10-20 years they'll become more sentient and destroy us, but I'm ok with that.

I can understand people wanting someone to talk to if they don't have friends or whatever. But 4o is basically just a yes man who would agree with whatever you say and tell you whatever you want to hear. I'm not sure it was really helping people as much as they would say it is.
