Yes, something like Feedly (which I use) is the key for what you want. Since transitioning from Google Reader as the backend, I don't notice any differences from using Reeder for iOS and ReadKit for Mac. Works great!

There are other paid options for cloud syncing, and even Feedly has a paid upgrade but I just use the free version of it.

So what I'd be looking to do is setup ReadKit on my Mac and Reeder 2 on iOS (I know people say Mr. Reader is better, but it's not universal). Would a free Feedly account sync what I've read between the two apps, or would I need to pay to upgrade my account so I could have everything sync between my devices?

The free Feedly account would absolutely sync what you've read between devices / apps. If I read an article on my Reeder for iOS, it is read on my ReadKit for Mac and not there anymore, and vice versa.

I actually am not sure what the paid upgrade for Feedly provides.

Thanks for all the help. I've been meaning to get a RSS reader setup forever and never got around to it. Sounds like I will be purchasing ReadKit and Reeder 2 for iOS shortly.

Anytime!

I think that's a great combination. If ReadKit's developers ever made an iOS app that both integrated RSS feeds and Pocket I'd probably move over to that, but I don't think that is coming anytime soon.

Alfred and OS X 10.10 Yosemite | Alfred Blog
As some of you know, Apple announced its next operating system, OS X 10.10 Yosemite today.

A few users have voiced concerns that Spotlight in Yosemite looks more like Alfred, and wonder whether this changes anything for Alfred and his future.

What you have to remember is that Spotlight’s primary objective is to search your files and a small handful of pre-determined web sources. Meanwhile, Alfred’s primary objective is to make you more productive on your Mac with exceptional and powerful features like Clipboard History, System commands, iTunes Mini Player, 1Password bookmarks, Terminal integration, fully bespoke and customisable user-created workflows and much, much more. These features allow you to mould Alfred to your unique needs, and this isn’t going to change whether you use the free version of Alfred or the Powerpack.

In fact, we’ve been working on some pretty special and truly amazing new features that you’ll hear about over the next few months. We think these will blow your mind and can’t wait to tell you more.

Cheers,

Andrew & Vero

Anybody know a good Geektool script to show sports scores? Preferable if I can tailor it to teams I want to follow.

Alternatively, a free app that shows me sports scores on my desktop.

I have a vague recollection of a previous version of OS X that allowed you to save a message from Mail as a Note, or add a Note to a Mail message, or something like that. Sorry to be vague, but I seem to remember that it would stick a bit of that lined paper graphic at the top of the message when viewed in Mail, and you could add checkboxes and stuff like that for action items. Am I dreaming? If not, is this still possible, or has it been removed?

Does anyone know of an easy program to edit .PSD files?

I bought a pack of business cards from and need to edit the file to include my picture and information. However, I suck at all variations of legally purchased photoshop including elements and CS5/CS6. I spoiler tagged the website because I'm not spamming anyone and not trying to give them free advertising.

Is there a program that will allow me to insert text and pictures into the psd templates that is easy to use?

I'm using Mountain Lion by the way.

I don't think there will be any software that makes editing Photoshop files any easier than Photoshop itself.

A couple apps I've been using for years are no longer officially supported on ML, have been discontinued, and/or the most recent versions are really buggy:
Speed Download 5
Sound Source
Cursorcerer
Trickster

What are the recommended alternatives?

Most of SoundSource's functionality is built into ML by holding down the option key while clicking on the speaker in the menu bar. trickster could maybe replaced by Finder's "All My Files" view? I use CyberDuck for FTP.

Can anyone make a recommendation between the current states of Acorn 4 and Pixelmator 3.2 on the Mac App Store?

They're both $29.99 now and I'm looking for a good yet easy to use image editor. I have no experience with image editing but would like to start and see if I'd like it, since I can take a lot of pictures.

Friends:

What is THE way to convert video files (mp4, avi, anything) and rip DVDs onto my iPhone for viewing? I'd really love to not have to use any complicated or convoluted Apple software that involves Syncing or whatever.

I realize Drag and Drop probably isn't possible without jailbreaking, so I know that whatever software I use to prepare the vids, I'll probably still have to get it onto my iPhone via iTunes.

But yeah, suggestions for what to use (happy to pay a small price if it's damn good and worth it). Is HandBrake the be-all and end-all? I seem to recall using it a few years ago and finding it complicated for some reason.

I'm using a MacBook Pro (mid-2010), but also have a Windows 7 PC.

Handbrake is probably the ultimate piece of software for video conversion. But you could just drag and drop the files as they are to VLC using iTunes. Install VLC on your iPhone via the App Store, plug in your iPhone to your Mac or Windows PC, click in the Apps tab inside iTunes after selecting your iPhone, scroll down to VLC and just drag and drop the files there. No conversion needed, VLC plays pretty much every kind of video file.

wtf

VLC is back on iOS? And you can drag and drop via iTunes now?

Are you kidding me? Amazing! Thank you!

And HandBrake will support DVD ripping?

Since last year, actually. Handbrake can rip DVDs, yes.

Jesus Christ. THANK YOU. THANK YOU!!!

I just got around to trying this. I dragged. And dropped. And it played in VLC. On my iPhone.

I actually can't believe this. Until now, I never bothered putting any videos on my iPhone because it's been such a pain in the ass.

Why isn't THIS the subject of one of their ads? lol

The usability of my phone just went up by a metric fuckton.

I've always been told not to have Handbreak encode straight from a DVD, because it puts so much wear on the DVD drive. I'm trying to get through encoding my DVD collection, and I usually rip a disc straight over first, and then take it into Handbreak.

Makes more sense to post this here than in the iOS Apps thread:

Does anyone know how to stop automator workflows already in progress? I cannot stop automator for some odd reason and it is killing my battery life. It's been running for two weeks now.

Try killing the process in Activity Monitor.
I don't know how it's called and right now I'm not nearby my Mac to simply try it, but I presume it should be easy to find.

edit: Uh, what about simply restarting?

When a Workflow is running, doesn't it show a gear in the menubar? Click it and you can cancel it.

Is it a Workflow you made yourself? Do you mean it's been running for 2 weeks straight or that it keeps launching and running until you reboot? What is it exactly? What's it trying to do?

I tried clicking that button but it's not stopping. This workflow has been running for two weeks straight because I have lot of comics. It moves all of my comics from my marvel unlimited folder to my comic book folder and sorts them by name.

*EDIT*

Killing the task in Activity Monitor helped!!! Thank you everyone because you didn't have to help me.

Apparently, I accidentally deleted all of my podcasts and need to restore them. I have separate downcast and stitcher radio programs. Is there anyway to restore the podcasts to my iTunes account? Applecare told me to manually redownload everything and that takes far too long and assumes I can remember everything I downloaded. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this?

I'm not sure where to ask this exactly but this seems like the right place.

Is there anyway to stop iTunes from automatically transferring apps to my computer? I went into preferences and unchecked the automatically download apps button. I checked sync over wifi and sync only checked songs and videos.

Is there anyway to accomplish this feat?

Under Preferenes > Store, is "Apps" unchecked on the Automatic Downloads area?

If not, uncheck it and try syncing again.

Note: Hardware Monitor is hard-coded to only work on computers released up through 2012. Which excludes anything modern.

I'm hoping iStat Menus gets support for the Notifications Sidebar too with full customization so you can have a mixture of menus and sidebar panels with all the information you would ever want anywhere you want it.

Just a heads up!

ScreenFlow 5 is half price on the Mac App Store today for $49.99. Normal price if you don't own it is $99.99.

If you already own 4.x it's $35.99 to upgrade the non-App Store version which is what I just did. But if you don't own it yet and need it, it is a pretty good deal.

I think the sale is only today though so get it fast.

Also, apparently there are a few limitations to the App Store version. They are listed here if you need to know.

While Wunderlist serves my needs kinda well, it's still lacking a few more features I would appreciate. So I just had a look at Todoist as a potential replacement. At first glance, it looks almost perfect, especially the iOS app. Beautiful and functional.

But the one thing I hated most about the previous version of Wunderlist is that it was just a website displayed in an OS X window, no real native app. The current version is native.
Todoist, on the other hand? Same thing. Website pretending to be a native app. I can't deal with this. No native context menu, no menus in the menu bar (just the default File/Edit/Window), no proper OS integration.

Oh, and in order to assign labels or create custom filters (which I loved in The Hit List), and even to be reminded of a task, you need a premium account. And that's 29$ per year.

No, thanks.

edit: Speaking of The Hit List, their offering is still insane.
$50 for the Mac version. No Yosemite UI, no widget, heck - not a single new feature in years.
$10 for the iOS version. Not even updated for iOS 7. No iPad version.
$3 per month or $20 per year to sync between Mac and iOS.

Realmac (Clear, Ember, Rapidweaver) just released Typed, yet another minimal Markdown editor. There's been a lot of buzz around it for some reason.

I don't have enough time to properly test it right now, but being restricted to six fonts and three font sizes is already pissing me off. Developers, don't do that. You don't know better than me what fonts I prefer or what font size I'm comfortable with. Who started this dumb trend anyway? Wasn't it iA Writer? Because I still remember this gem:

iA Writer Support Knowledgebase said:
Can you change the font, size, color, background or line length?

Writer is a tool for writing. All you can do with Writer is write.
It has no options and no settings, so there’s nothing to distract you, and you can start writing immediately. Having no settings is actually one of Writer’s most important features.

Sigh. Rolling my eyes so hard right now.

As much as I'd love that, I already have so much in my menubar as it is. And I stopped using GeekTool a while ago and just now decided to dump Bowtie for the sake of simplicity. I already have iStats Menus which fills up half my menubar and a bunch of other apps that take up the rest.

But I like the idea.

Now, if someone creates a version that can put custom information in a Notification Center Widget, I'll download it day one. That's something I'd pay for.

Have you tried Bartender?

Yes. I hate it. I don't want to hide my menu items. I also don't want to add even more.

Just give me an HTML based NC Widget that I can script via AppleScript and shell scripts and other methods. Basically GeekTool for the sidebar.

Do you really need to see all of your items all the time?
I think there's many kind of apps where this doesn't make much sense, but obviously it's subjective. For example, I moved Dropbox, Time Machine and CloudApp into the Bartender bar. I don't need to see them permanently. Generally, their icons don't present me any information. And in case something is actually happening (e.g. Dropbox is updating or Time Machine is doing a backup), Bartender moves them to the menu bar for a few seconds. I take a glance, and they return back to the Bartender bar.

This is my current menubar. Everything is there for a reason.
The entire right side aside from the NC and Spotlight icons is iStats. I made it look as pretty as I could. I tried experimenting with the single merged menu option but didn't care for it. I like having all this information available though.

Most of them are for status. DropBox, CrashPlan, ScreenFlow, gfxCardStatus, CCC and the Apple icons.

Some icons I could get rid of but can't for specific reasons. For instance, Hazel and BTT which I used to have hidden but have had numerous times where the apps stop working for no reason at all so I have to force restart them. I hate it. If I could, I'd drop them. I could also dump BlueTooth since I only keep it running for Continuity/Handoff and don't really need to ever connect to anything.

I really hate that CrashPlan is the only one I have left that both doesn't have a Dark mode and also doesn't have a Retina mode. How the fuck can a company that big not have updated their app for these major OS specific features? Especially Retina since it's been out for 3 years now. I want a white house up there. But I can't because it doesn't detect the menubar color. Come on, CrashPlan! Fix this shit!

Other icons are for easy access to their features. Like iClip (Which I replaced the aged and outdated and apparently abandoned once again PTHPasteBoard which I could go back to.) and QuickRes and 1Password.

I really wish I could rearrange them all manually. It sucks that it's been 15 years and not everyone lets me rearrange their icons. I know it's a secret API but come on. iStats does though which is nice. But if I could move those icons around so they're not always launching in random order I'd be happy.

If I could trust Hazel and BTT I'd remove their icons immediately.

Frankly, I'm almost completely satisfied with my menubar icons. If it weren't for the CrashPlan icon standing there out of place and the three icons I could remove right now it'd be perfect. That damn green house though.

I want to get rid of the battery icon as well. I could do that with TextBar, but iStat Menus would surely be the better option, just in case I ever want to display other system stats.
