wow, you are satan if you didn't enjoy that short. give me a pen and paper and i will prove it with math.

I don't know, I'm a big fan of Pixar, their films and their shorts but I just didn't care for it.

Lifted from last year, and One Man Band from the year before were both much better.

No, it wasnt. BUT, keeping in line with my previous remark about the Oscars not awarding the best film so much as they are making up for flubs of years past, I see the ROTK Best Picture win to be a mulligan for FOTR not winning in 2001.

Truth, and we were even talking about that earlier in this thread.

Defiance got snubbed, because it was also a holocaust movie.

Now a really honest question: will any of you watch the best picture nominees more than 3 times? I am not, but I can watch the dark knight, wrestler, wall-e more than 3 times and not be bored.

What? Defiance was god awful.

Seriously how the fuck did The Reader get a nom over TDK? TDK was right up oscar alley with very little action and a lot of character development and dialouge.

I'll pick up the Benjamin Button BD and watch that a few times for sure and Slumdog as well. I'll probably pick up Frost/Nixon too. But the other two? meh.

I know, it's a typical mediocre zwick movie (but that's not the discussion here), but if a movie like the reader can be nominated why can't be defiance? (because the academy loves the holocaust theme).

it's a comic book movie and comic book movies are inherently not deserving of real critical praise

aka comic book movies, lol

Honestly not surprised over the snubbing of The Dark Knight, not really the kind of film The Academy showers with awards with anyway. I am personally more upset over the snubbing of The Wrestler.

Thumbs-up to the Oscars for nominated this. Frankly I didn't expect it - too dark, too morose, etc. etc.

My film tastes aren't in line with GAF, but I knew you'd actually read my post!

I hear Revanche is great. Looks like it doesn't get released in the US until March, though. There doesn't appear to be a set US release date for Baader Meinhof yet.

Yup. TDK got 8 noms. Wrestler got what? 2? 3?

Who cares about Baader Meinhof when you have The Class and Revanche.

Not to say it's the be-all, end-all criteria but Reader only has 60% on Rotten Tomatoes. :\

Can't believe Aronofsky or Nolan didn't get a nom.

Wasn't there even a better gay movie this year? Preferably one during the holocaust.

A movie about a gay teenager during the holocaust who makes witty observations about teenage pregnancy? I smell Oscar GOLD.

This, absolutely.

ROTK 11/11, to me, was simple for the entire trilogy. Because the trilogy is landmark cinema, and whether you hate the films or not, you cannot deny the achievements that was done with the trilogy. For me, it's hard to choose which of the 3 I love most, as each have a different feel to it. I love the entire trilogy, and I felt that whatever ROTK one, was not just for ROTK, but the entire trilogy, once again, and for that it fully deserves it.

Michael Cera leans against the fence trying to get on his Nazi guard's good side.

Cera - I mean half of the women in there have babies in the oven.

The guard looks back at him wide eyed as you can hear his thoughts.

ArnettGuard - "Is he on to us?!"

Jumps on segway to alert of the news.

American Splendor was great!

I know you probably meant it sarcastically, but at the end of the day The Dark Knight is a "comic book movie, lol", sure a better "comic book movie, lol" than most "comic book movies, lulz", but even on a relatively weak year like 2008, it really doesn't compare favorably with the cream of the crop. For once, kudos for The Academy for not giving it any meaningful nominations.

“Well done Winslet. I told you, do a Holocaust movie and the awards come, didn’t I?"

Lol valkyrie was also about nazis, omg tom cruise and singer ROFL.

To preface: I never did and still don't care about TDK getting nominations.

That said, man, those are some boring nominations. Frost/Nixon? The Reader? Really? The Academy proves again how toothless they are. Slumdog is a nice choice, but, really man. Boring noms.

Really surprised at the academy bypassing the usual Eastwood ass-kissing and snubbing Gran Torino. The Reader is also a surprise, though I suppose one shouldn't underestimate the ability of the Weinsteins to land a nom for a tepidly received film (Chocolat comes to mind).

EDIT: Though I'm more surprised by Sally Hawkins and Bruce Springsteen getting snubbed.

Boring year for movies.

I'm surprised that they picked Winslet for The Reader, rather than Revolutionary Road.

I've not seen either, but she's gotten more accolades for the second, from what I've seen.

No TDK makes me angry because I really do believe it to be a great, classic film, but I'm not all that surprised.

2009 will be an amazing year with a new street fighter movie, a dragon ball movie.
it's amazing to think with the original SF movie to learn from that the new one looks much worse (at least imo) :lol

I'll just express my annoyance that "The Girl Who Leapt Through Time" didn't make it to the nominations.

Whether it is better than Wall-E is arguable, but I certainly think it's better than Kung-Fu Panda.

So movies are the opposite of games. Games can't get GOTY unless they're blockbusters. Movies can't win awards unless they're not.

I'm actually baffled as to how Kung Fu Panda got a nomination in the first place. It's like, one of Dreamworks best films, maybe. But that's like saying, I took a great shit on Tuesday, as opposed to Sunday.

It came out it in 2006. It's not eligible.

It's a 2006 film. I'm pretty sure Ponyo won't be electable in 2009, either.
