Ouya launch delayed to June 25, controller defect being fixed

We've got an Ouya here. Others are programming for it (I've played the game we've got and can verify it from that side), and they tell me the data from the sticks is terrible - even when spending the time to massage the dead zones and whatnot. The 360 controllers on the Ouya work great. The Ouya controllers on the Ouya are problematic. I've never heard of stuck buttons til now, but we've talked plenty about bad stick data and controller lag in general. If it's a software issue, great! But it seems hardware related, and "being fixed" would have been the ideal outcome obviously.

Ah. That's interesting to hear. Do you know if it's the clear version of the controller or the second version that has silver grey handles?

More info on the practically unusable controllers. http://t.co/nO6yVPmy91

The ouyas, basically an 8 way stick with a walk/run low and high level. Cheap, and disasterous on games that don't expect it.

Holy shit lol.

If, as I suspect, its because cheap insensitive potentiometers were used, there is no fixing it.

Their silence and the delay implies, to me, that they know this and have hit the panic/delay button to tweak it or get a new controller manufacturer. Its just a shame that backers=beta testers.

Honestly, I can survive if the dev controllers aren't perfect and we even have to pay to replace them or whatever. I just want them to fix the retail versions so our game will run as expected.

"We're sorry, Ouya controllers are not supported at this time" doesn't seem like the best option for shipping our game.

EDIT: and lol at the Ouya logo

Bail out. Check out the conversion rates from the first few waves of OUYA. Keep in mind that these are backers, so they're probably more inclined to buy games for it than the average person.

One of my engineers pointed me to this earlier today. It's very telling of the problems we've been seeing. Man I hope they make an attempt to fix this.

I've been reading about this in the dev forums. It sounds like a software problem - hopefully it's something that can be fixed in the controller firmware.

Thanks for the concern. We're not betting on big sales. We're just testing the waters.

Doesn't the Ouya work with 360 wireless controllers? That Ouya controller always looked like an anti-ergonomic, cheap piece of crap.

Someone is going to give me shit about being a flip-flopper for this, but I just received my Ouya. I have always had high hopes for it, but unfortunately my first couple of hours have been somewhat negative.

Unboxing the unit was fine. It was definitely a lower cost piece of hardware than I'm used to, and the core box itself seems great. I was able to power it on without a problem and it immediately booted. I had no problem getting it on to my wireless and linking to my Ouya account. This was all fine.

I picked up the controller and it felt great in my hands. The four triggers feel great. I'd even put the analog r2/l2 above the DS3s, but not above the 360's.

I already know about the analog stick issues from other points in this thread. I'm going to ignore those for right now, since they're software, and are probably solvable in firmware, or possible to compensate for in software.

Now for the part where I get to complain.

The D-Pad is bad. It's mushy. It seems like it has the normal buckling membrane buttons that we're all so used to, but something is very not right with it.

The other problem is the face buttons. They are at least easy to describe. They feel mostly fine - mostly like the 360's buttons (this is what I'm using as a comparison right now, but I could pull out Wii, Wii U, PS3, DS, 3DS, CC, CC Pro, and Logitech F310, not to mention NES, SNES, and Genesis upstairs), but they're missing something simple - A hard stop. The controller lets me push them too far in. I think this at least could be fixed easily in manufacturing. It's probably just a small design change.

Of course, now that I've gotten this far, I should finish out with my last two gripes - these are more personal preference, and don't *need* to be resolved.

The button naming is wrong. OUYA seems like it's a great idea in concept, but in practice it's confusing. I am a long time Nintendo gamer, so in my case I'd prefer it if they'd have picked it's naming scheme, but really, they should have just copied Microsoft's. An ABXY flipped either way would have made me happy.

The other issue that doesn't *need* to be resolved is the lack of a start or select button. My initial thought was that most developers would just use hot spots on the touchpad, but that's really not what's happening in practice. In practice they junk either X or Y for a menu button.

I LOVE what Ouya is trying to do. Unfortunately it feels like an industrial designer that doesn't game was asked to design a control pad. It felt good in his hands and the buttons work, and the faceplates were nifty - he's done.

They need to go back and fix these things before they release in stores. They should keep manufacturing consoles, but the controllers just aren't right. They need to cook more. They need to consult Logitech maybe. $100k to logitech would be a cheap price to pay to get the controllers right before this thing goes retail.

Oh I thought the controller defect was latency, so is there still lag from the controller?

Also sucks for those who have their OUYA already (not the dev version)

*edit* holy shit at that 'analog' stick input, if you can even call it one.

I think this is more to do with copyrights then just not going with ABXY

It's hard to imagine that it's a copyright, patent, or trademark thing - unless they're going to try and attempt to copyright a button naming convention.

There's just been too many versions of the same thing over the years:

Right-Left:

Left-Right:

Nintendo, NEC, and Sony go right to left, and Sega and MS go left to right.

I could find some more examples, but I got bored.

There are of course some oddball Nintendo ones out there too.

I don't think there would have been any copyright issues.
