Overwatch has developed quite a fan art following....

She's somewhere on the Autism spectrum, probably.

And unlike Pharah, Mei is a) small, b) bespectacled, and c) this:

That comic is totally referring to the spectrum of morality. That's the characters whole thing.

Not to be mean, that just seems sort of obvious. Anything else would be sort of random.

Nobody asks someone where they are on the spectrum of morality. That's not a thing that happens.

When somebody refers to being "on the spectrum," they mean Austism/Aspergers. Full stop.

In a real life conversation? Sure. In fictional lore? Doubtful.

Again, the whole thing with the character is she's a good person working for a bad company. So she's morally conflicted. She has no firm space on that particular spectrum.

I don't know, that seems fairly obvious to me and is an easier take to support than the autism stuff. This wasn't a line of dialogue pulled from a conversation in a doctors office. Autism has no exclusive claim to "spectrum" as a term, either. Most things exist on a spectrum, people especially.

One day I realized that sadness is just another word for not enough coffee.
I mean it could easily be both. Just because she's on the autism spectrum doesn't also mean she can't have impaired empathy, leading to a moral system that's just a bit... different.

Her emotes support both points. Askew hints at obsessive behavior, while "My Reality" is self illustrative.

That's fair. The idea that comic book fiction would be so strictly adhering to something from our own real world ("it's autism Full Stop") seems like an overly-staunch interpretation though. I mean, they're already not doing that with any other part of the fiction.

It's awesome if it's both - I totally want to see more perspectives and sxperiences in games and in fiction in general - but I can't see it being just the one and the argument that it is is kinda weak and debunked by the very nature of the material.

Tought I ended on the beta thread by mistake seeing the Symm "spectrum" discussion, heh. Haly brought a new idea and it sounds interesting indeed.

That said, back to the schedule (this one is huge, sry):

edit: not so huge here, but there's a way bigger version at the source.

This captures the spirit of a match amazingly well. Love it.

Playing Mei is much funnier when you just picture all her lines as being cold sarcasm and that she is actually kind of dangerous and scary.

I was player earlier and heard some funny voice lines; a Junkrat said, "I'm gettin' cold just lookin' at ya!" and the Mei responded, "Well you should stop looking!"

Overwatch has done a very good job at characterization. It is a least as good as the TF2 mercs.

TF2 was spectacular for its time (a decade ago) but Overwatch absolutely decimates TF2 in characterization. They're way past TF2 mercs.

Really accurate, the mercy on the team is waiting to respawn cause no one bothered protecting her

There's more Pharah artwork with casual clothing than with the armor. And most are doodles/sketches (that look cool too, of course). Will try to post these too to make justice for her.

I hate knowing about this stuff :/

Still, good to know you're having our backs on this -dere thing :)

eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeehh

if you have to project your own fan theories into these charisma-vacant lines of dialog that's a pretty big indication of how well of a job overwatch's writing does at characterizing the heroes

Or you know, just the opposite. The reason why people like creating their own versions of the characters is because their characterization is so well done.

or that they're visually incredibly catching but pretty much vessels for the fan community because it's shallow writing amounts to bad wordplay at best and at worst it integrates it's generic backstory with the finesse of a tire fire.

Have you been looking? Because its not hard to find stuff (and by stuff I actually mean clean stuff - though I guess it's not hard to find the other stuff either). Her, Pharah and Symmetra are definitely unloved compared to the others :(
They're my three favorite characters too. Well no one can ruin them I guess.

you know how blizzard failed to provide their female demographic with men that had visually sexy outfits* so they had to start theorizing how sexy reaper's thighs are?

that's what StrangeTaco was doing with mei's writing
oh fuck now the writing is awesome s/

edit: *the faceless robot**, that's it. IT'S A ROBOT** ASS. IMAGINE IF THAT ROBOT WITH CAMELTOE FROM MASS EFFECT 3 HAD THE ONLY VISUALLY SEXY OUTFIT FOR DUDES IN THAT WHOLE FRANCHISE

I wasn't actually referring to any specific character, and I never said the writing in Overwatch was perfect. However a few cheesy voice lines and banter does not mean the characterization is bad. Also not "providing their female demographic with men that had visually sexy outfits" doesn't really have anything to do with bad characterization either.
