Overwatch wins Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2016

Counterstrike won last year, any contenders this year?

And people who shit on OW competitive have no clue about the scene. Since it's extremely popular in Korea, Koreans are as usual absolutely insane.

I'd put Street Fighter above it. Overwatch is still trying to figure out what it really is, with constant changes and updates. They went from "Hero stacking is a part of the game" to "Okay fine we fixed it."

imo the best games combine great story and great gameplay, and overwatch didn't do enough in the story department. Not gonna say it doesn't deserve GOTY though, its still a great game.

I've been playing this game every chance I can since it released. Never has a game sunk it's teeth into me quite like Overwatch

My thoughts on this show...

Have the Black Beatles song playing in your head...

♫ This show is only good for teasers

Goddamn, Geoff Keighley loves Kojima

Mick Gordon's performance about to give me fucking seizures

Finish the show, it's getting too crony

Nintendo still tryna sell Wii U

GAFers mad for whatever reason

More AssCreed footage? Keep drinkin'

I'll fucking lose it if Uncharted 4 doesn't win it ♫

I don't have beef with Overwatch really, I haven't played it but it looks good and it's by far the most talked game around my circles this year, so it has to be doing something right.

The thing I'm pissed at is how Dark Souls 3 wasn't nominated at all for anything somehow. Surely it's important enough as a series by now to make it into these awards, no? Weird.

Edit: Hold on, it looks like it was nominated for best RPG. Still weird that it was only that, but eh.

Doesn't seem like it? At least judging from this thread. TBH I'm actually a little shocked by the backlash towards UC4, haven't followed the reception since launch but people were loving it back then. Bloodborne is as loved now as it was day one.

Uncharted 4, much like Titanfall 2 is a great game where pretty much ONE aspect all but ruined it.

Uncharted 4 fixed SOOOOOOO much from the first 3 games and then undid all of it with atrocious pacing. Not forgetting that the game simply outstays it's welcome. It just drags on.

To put in perspective how popular OW is here, it managed to dethrone League of Legends. My students couldn't care less about LoL now it's all about OW.

Hopefully this is a sign that From Software will drop Dark Souls and reboot their best franchise, Lost Kingdoms.
Someday... God do I miss that series.

and lock actual gameplay content behind loot drops and make cosmetics locked behind a paywall? Yeah, no thanks.

Well, it's true.

I would prefer that then grinding constantly just for one box, took forever in the free weekend against AI just to level up

Oh is it "cool" to pretend this is true? Because... Lol, come on... No.

Or, you know, people disagree with you? You know people have different opinions yes?

Anyways, let's check the nominees:

Overwatch - Better than Uncharted 4? - Yes
Titanfall 2 - Better than Uncharted 4? - Yes
Inside - Better than Uncharted 4? - Yes

damn, that was hard.

Don't play against AI then? You get more XP fighting actual people, for obvious reasons.

Why was it off? Because the games you wanted to win didn't win or because of something else? Not trying to come off as hostile just wondering as I didn't notice anything "off".

A bunch of things actually. The way they handle leavers is to punish everyone on the leaver's team rather than to actually create extremely painful punishments for the leaver. If someone leaves your game then you get a message then you get a loss, which is something that you have no control over whatsoever. It is a punishment for the leaver's teammates more than anything else. They tell you that you can leave the game with no consequences, but they don't mention that you lose any XP gained in that match. So if you want to actually earn the XP for that game, you have to stay until the very end in a completely one-sided match that isn't fun for you. That by itself is a glaring flaw in the competitive mode.

Next, the placement system in Season 2 placed so many people in Gold and Platinum that matches in those levels were all over the place. Sometimes you'd get balanced matches, but most of the time they were stomps because you've got people of all skill levels being placed together. You can't create a competitive mode where you lump 80% of people into the same skill tiers; that's not how you create balanced games and it makes for an unenjoyable experience.

Then you have the streak system which still baffles me. The system increases the amount of rank you gain/lose every time you win/lose a consecutive game. So you gain more rank for winning multiple games in a row, and you lose more rank for losing multiple games in a row. This makes no sense from a statistical perspective because even in a perfect 50% probabilistic universe you will get lots of streaks. Flip a coin 1,000 times and you'll get roughly 500 heads and 500 tails, but you'll also get tons of streaks along the way; it's a natural occurrence. With Overwatch's ranking system you would actually end up either higher or lower than where you started even if you won 50% of all matches because of this nonsensical streak system.

I have complaints about the loot box system, matchmaking, and other aspects of the game, but it's really the competitive mode that completely baffles me. The gameplay itself is really fun and with tweaks to the matchmaker and the competitive mode the game could be amazing, but after putting 50 hours into the game I just can't enjoy it anymore. I feel like the competitive mode needs a few more iterations before I can consider it a fun and enjoyable experience.

then like Team Fortress 2 it should be free 2 play

TF2 was actually a lot more fun before it went free-to-play. A time when equipping items was a genuine strategic decision, rather than a means to monetisation. Also, weirdly, going free-to-play killed some alternative game modes, like Arena.

Overwatch wouldn't be improved by going free-to-play.

But what if I don't want too? what if I prefer fighting against bots

Then you still get less xp. A lot of mp games don't give you any progression for fighting against bots because then people would cheese that.

Besides the fact literally every single gameplay item is unlocked before your first match. That's a rarity these days. Even DOOM and Battlefront didn't do it.

I really don't get the Uncharted 4 hate. Loved the game. Super Happy overwatch won but jeesus are people making out Uncharted 4 to be the worst 2016 game here.

Not sure what's funnier so far, the salt from those who can't accept that OW is really without question the game event of the year, or the shade being thrown by UC4 haters who can't seem to let go. Embarrassing all round!

But what if I don't want too? what if I prefer fighting against bots

Why would you buy a multiplayer game to only play against bots? It's literally ignoring the major part of the game.
Most games also don't give you anything, not even XP for playing against bots btw.

No.

Team Fortress 2 balance is in the shitter partially because of it being free to play. Then there's the way they completely whore out their cosmetics... if you think OW does cosmetics poorly you should take a look at TF2.

Also Team Fortress 2 became f2p years after it was released, Overwatch hasn't even been out a year yet.

Well its not like Overwatch had any competition this year. It was either it or recycled sequel 9000. OW deserves any and all praise it receives.

Well the day it does, I will download it because then it will the price it should of been at launch.

Ok. I'm sure Blizzard will take your weird refusal to purchase a game because it doesn't meet your arbitrary, unprecedented standards seriously.

Like, you don't seem to enjoy multiplayer shooters. That's fine, that doesn't mean they're not worth the money to those who do.

If it was f2p the microtransactions would have been assuredly worse, the community would probably be worse and the heroes might be on rotation which would be a death blow to the game. It being retail price means they could offer all heroes, cosmetics and future updates and content to owners of the game without any additional purchase.

Yeah but you don't even really care about the game so why do we care what you think about how it should have been priced? If you only want to play against AI, it's not a game for you. Move on.
