Pachter talks about AdBlock

"adblock will get beat, there will be a way to make you watch ads you can not block"

LOL. There will always be a cat and mouse game. To think once some sites figure out a way to circumvent adblockers that they'll just say game over and not try to 1up the new method is dumb.

Many moons ago John Walker wrote a good piece about a few issues (actually it was a response to a Ben Kuchera article) and the nature of blocking ads came up. He pretty said that if people are going to use them not to have it block everything and then only allow sites you like but have everything whitelisted and put the annoying, spammy sites on your block list. The point he made was that in the modern day and age any sort of tech problem can be resolved sometimes from someone elses website but if you're blocking all ads then you're not going to be helping the person who could have helped you.

A way to have unblockable ads is to put the ads in the video file itself

Hulu does this, no? In fact, why doesn't Gametrailers do what a number of Viacom sites do? For example, Logo (A site also owned by Viacom) has it set up that if you watch videos with AdBlock, the page crashes and goes white 10 seconds in. You actually have to turn off AdBlock to watch videos.

Very strange Gametrailers doesn't do that, as the same player and setup is used.

Ofcourse GAF is green, but the way Youtube and Twitch ads work, because of my region I guess, I get to see the same ad over and over and over again. It drives me insane. So I adblock it. Until they can offer a better experience.

I like GAF in this regard because it doesn't have intrusive ads with sounds.

So kudos to Evilore for not destroying my ears with horribly loud ads, like some sites including Gametrailers do.

"SCUM BAG, BASTARD, IDIOT, SCUM BAG.. etc" I knew there was a reason I stopped watching/listening to what he had to say years ago. Nice to see some things never change.

What I don't understand though is why some websites are designed in such a way that the middle of the screen is full of stuff while the sides are completely blank. Why not just have the adds on the sides and keep them out of the videos? Everyone's happy and your sites don't look silly any more.

*shrug*

You get banned if you admit to using Adblock or are caught using Adblock whilst on GAF.

I've only seen one guy get banned over it and it was because he was gloating about it on gaf (about gaf) , so evilore banned him.

I think he was banned for being a dick about it not for admitting to use ad block.

I knew this thread would deliver

Well, he certainly is no Jim Sterling....

I only unblock adds on sites that are worth my while and don't use the shitty kind.
For the majority of sites I just don't think it's worth the effort to slug through that crap. Then again, I have only a few sites I visit daily and enjoy, thus don't mind supporting them.

GT is not one of them. :P

Never gonna give adblock up. I understand the point that money is being lost for them but in a world of inconveniences this is one I can avoid

That was hilarious. I have my adblock installed on some sites........but at the same time, what he said is pretty much accurate. I just like to watch the world burn.

Because advertisers actually want you to see them?

Kind of off-topic, but how would new users be notified about the Ad-Block rule? I wasn't told when I first became a member and I only knew because I used to lurk.

He is right though , 30 seconds is a very small price to pay to watch video content. I wish newspaper sites would do this instead of making me pay for a digital subscription for news that I don't even care about when I just want to see the damn sports articles.

No you aren't. You can use adblock and admit you use it. You are banned if you admit you use it to block ads on NeoGaf. You can whitelist a site on adblock so ads from there aren't blocked.

Evilore himself said he chooses to believe everyone on Gaf browses with ads on. He won't install stuff to track people who actively block ads on Gaf.

I've got a good feeling Pachter got trolled there pretty hard. The guy asking the question clearly knows exactly what he's doing and Pachter didn't need to go on about it for the majority of his weekly video game show.

Good info. I think I just dodged a bullet. I like this site, so I don't mind unblocking for GAF.
That said,An Zhao's PANDA! tickets look mighty tempting. to say the least.

I by default turn adblock off for websites that I visit. I did however turn it on for gametrailers for a time because the video would completely screw up every 30 seconds as they loaded in new ads. It was obnoxious.

I'm a "I whitelist everything and keep adblock installed in case of emergencies" type person.

Because advertisers actually want you to see them?

You gotta have pretty narrow vision to not see adds on the sides of your screen. In fact, the adds would be visible for 100% of the time then instead of just the 15 seconds before a video, so the advertisers should welcome that, no?

I haven't watched the video but I have been finding Pachter more and more obnoxious lately. Also most of his answers these days are "I don't know" followed up by some guesswork and general BSing.

So I stopped watching.

The very last part where he says "It is almost like stealing" made me cringe.
Next up: blocking ads should be illegal...
Disapointed.

I have never used adblock (actually never installed the program) and I've been absolutely fine without it. But I understand why some people use it. I had major problems with the wording on that adblock Kickstarter(?) some time ago though, but that's another story.

It's a bit of a vicious circle right now though: People began using adblock, some because the ads had become too intrusive and others because they could, and because of that sites began displaying more intrusive ads to get more out of the people who still don't use it. And repeat. Will probably have to do something about the whole ad model when an alternative is found.

I'd rather have banner ads that I can ignore, than ads inserted into videos and podcasts that I'm forced to watch/listen to

I only adblock sites that have popup adds or shit like that. Even sites with excessive ads, plastered all over the place I allow since it doesn't really bother me and I am using their site which costs money to run.

I don't have any problem with ads, but I also demand better content from professional people who report on games.

That's what he meant

I guess I agree with Pach. If you don't support sites you enjoy in some way, even as simple as watching a few seconds of ads, you're scum.

I do have adblock enabled as default, but if I enjoy something somewhere, I'll sure as hell click the logo and uncheck "enabled for this site" straight away.

I unblocked ads for a time from Gametrailers, but then I watched several videos, all with the exact same ad in front of them. This was the case for days on end.

The only thing worse than unskippable, intrusive ads is the continued repetition of the very same ad, again and again and again and again.

Sorry GT. Am always open to alternatives or to trying it out again in the future though.
