Pachter talks about AdBlock

Because advertisers actually want you to see them?

But pachter told me I can walk away during the ad?
He's taking money from ad companies and telling us to walk away as long as he gets his ad money!
What a scumbag

Btw browsing without adblock and noscript is BEGGING to get a keylogger or virus sooner or later.
There's plenty of em that will infect your pc without you having to click anything, just being on the page with the offending banner is enough.

Whitelisting sites you like is the only sane thing to do if you want to keep your pc safe (because at least then it's a calculated risk)

I've got a good feeling Pachter got trolled there pretty hard. The guy asking the question clearly knows exactly what he's doing and Pachter didn't need to go on about it for the majority of his weekly video game show.

Agreed, in my opinion it was a mistake to talk about Ad blocker. Pretty sure a lot of people have no idea about it. At best this is only going to increase the number of people using is...

bs

show me where that rule is written

welp

I unblocked ads for a time from Gametrailers, but then I watched several videos, all with the exact same ad in front of them. This was the case for days on end.

The only thing worse than unskippable, intrusive ads is the continued repetition of the very same ad, again and again and again and again.

Sorry GT. Am always open to alternatives or to trying it out again in the future though.

This so much!

Every GT video i have seen so far this week starts with the same damn Unicef ad, every damn time.

A way to have unblockable ads is to put the ads in the video file itself

Adverts don't work like that. Unlike videos, ads have a limited time. They have a budget and once that's reached it'll be removed and replaced with a new ad to continue getting money. Encoding it in the video will just make the video show stale, unprofitable ads which will damage both the site and its users.

And Patcher's 30 second black screen thing won't work properly either. Because sites won't always have paying adverts to show so they're better off just showing the video. And to know if they have ads or not they'll need to check with the advertisers, AdBlock blocks/mimics that communication to stop adverts.

There'll always be a way around it.

So is it just as bad if I close my eyes and plug my ears during ads? Is it stealing if I don't click the ad?

I've never clicked an ad and never will. Your advertising "revenue" and views per load are hokum anyway.

The minute the entire internet does away with ads that expand to cover something you were just about to click, auto play with video and audio, use battery draining flash, or show sexy stuff when you might be browsing in a room with your family, I'll disable adblock. Until then, fuck it. I do whitelist sites I want to make money off me and aren't too annoying with the ads though, like neogaf.

Also, isn't this offtopic subforums stuff?

I disagree.

You said you get banned for admitting you use adblock, which isn't true. And that you get banned for using it while on Gaf, which is also a lie (because it's still on even on whitelisted sites) . Members corrected you, and you corrected yourself.

So yes, it was completely different.

That was entertaining! One bit I disagreed was when he said that game reviewers who get paid will have greater reviews then people who review for free. A review is subjective and an opinion for the most part, so saying opinion who gets paid is better then opinion which is free is a bit silly. Reminds me of all those COD reviews (no offense to anyone who likes COD) which failed to mention any bad things about the game. Yeah that was really accurate wasn't it?

Google should enable a way to directly pay the money equivalent to the ad-revenue, I would do that in a heartbeat.

So is it just as bad if I close my eyes and plug my ears during ads? Is it stealing if I don't click the ad?

Using gametrailers as an example; If you use adblock, you prevent gametrailers from getting paid. If you don't use adblock and you don't watch the ads on purpose, you are preventing the ad-makers from getting what they paid gametrailers for. So yeah, someone somewhere is getting screwed unless the ad is actually seen.

I don't use adblock on neogaf or reddit since I use both site alot and the adds are non invasive. Gotta admit I run it on Youtube and Twitch but for Leagues of Legends LCS I just watch it in Chrome and let IE muted in the background on the same stream.

I only adblock sites that have popup adds or shit like that. Even sites with excessive ads, plastered all over the place I allow since it doesn't really bother me and I am using their site which costs money to run.

The other option is to just not visit their site. That's what I do. Or I watch videos on their sponsored Youtube channels. If you really were so against these folks being paid you wouldn't have any interest or need for their content. If the pop ups and ads are annoying, then don't give them your view. That seems the fair alternative to me anyway.

I don't think you get perma'ed - so there's a way to find out. ;)

Might be in the TOS though.

Wtf are you saying... I'm not even disputing if it's even a rule or not. All I asked was how new users would be aware of this rule since I wouldn't have found out without lurking.

Adblock is turned off for GAF and a few other sites but gametrailers? ign? those places' ads are blocked from day one.

I browsed IGN on private mode a few days ago.

I saw like three ads that completely covered the screen that I had to click the "X" button to get rid of.

Yeah. That's why I have Adblock.

"SCUM BAG, BASTARD, IDIOT, SCUM BAG.. etc" I knew there was a reason I stopped watching/listening to what he had to say years ago. Nice to see some things never change.
Present to us a video where he called people anything mean before this video. You can even pull up web interviews, it doesn't have to be just Pach Attack.

Your memory is extremely faulty and you might need your head examined by a doctor.

All of us only have a certain finite amount of time on this earth. And if you don't believe in a deity or reincarnation, there's nothing beyond that. It just ends suddenly and finally and you become worm food.

So if you really want to make the most of that time... to treasure life and its bounty, it makes sense not to waste time watching ads for a few seconds a day. Those seconds add up day after day after day. The richness of one moment in time is priceless and irreplaceable.

This is why you have to pay to use public restrooms.

How is that comparable many rest rooms are free and normally inside business's that earn other forms of revenue. Ads are lifeblood of a many websites.

Honestly the issue is there's not much regulation in the way of these adds. Many of them are simply virus's in disguise unknown to the website showing it.

Hence why more and more people use ad block.

Wait, he said "televion would go away". Where do I have to sign?

(the following part is nonsense, series would still be made, because they can be sold on DVD/BluRay)

How about those stupid adds that emit constant beeps or annoying sounds? Yeah, to hell with that.

Adblock and torrents have profound negative impacts on the market. Given how the economy is faring they are extremely destructive.

I actually thought of a ingenious method of advertising. What if companies showed scenes from excellent movies or gameplay/gameplay trailers that people love, and and the end of the ad the "PAMPERS, IT KEEPS EVERYONE HAPPY" flashes on the screen for a few seconds.

Like, the "how am I funny" scene from Goodfellas being 95% of the ad? I'd watch that shit every time! Kojima made trailers? Every time!

Adblock and torrents have profound negative impacts on the market. Given how the economy is faring they are extremely destructive.

He regularly call people stupid, indirectly.

"What a stupid question"

Why care about the sincerity of the person who submitted the question? You can't pretend to have not seen this attitude expressed on the internet especially in threads like these on other forums.
