What about that whole scene at their dorms which ends up with her peeking at him through the door? That was so so bad the audience erupted in laughter, and not in a good way.

I don't remember anything particular about that scene, just that like all the scenes of those two prior to battle, they are very corny and obvious.

Well, there's obviously something in this movie that resonates well with plenty of people. You're just not one of them.

Fair enough.

And my entire theater audience loved it and had a great time, laughed and cheered. What has that have to do with anything? If you are judging general audience reactions there are reviews and scores that will prove you right or wrong depending on which you pick. Good for you I guess?

It's fine if you didn't like it, it is a flawed movie and it wasn't for you. The way you are conducting yourself here is the groan worthy part, and pretending that liking this movie suddenly means you have lower standards and you can counter every positive argument about it (like you taunted that other poster about) is laughable, which means you are only here to rile people up and not to talk about a movie you didn't like or have a "harsh opinion".

I'll stop humoring you now, there's bets I need to make.

Fair enough again. My main issue is that it is a very flawed movie and that's all really. And yes, some people do have lower standards than others, nothing laughable about that. Look at that guy who said the acting was good because he compared it to his own acting skills and he would've done worse, maybe he was joking.

More awesome vintage posters

I assure you that the bolded part is not true. I can definitely appreciate a good sci-fi movie or even an anime about giant robots. This movie had too many flaws that took me and the ENTIRE audience in the cinema out of the experience. There were people literally groaning during the movie.

Entire audience being how man? About 10 people?
Where are you from? It's been out for about 3 or 4 weeks so the audience would be very minimal by now.

I have seen the movie 6 times and every time the audience was very positive.

I saw it three times and from my viewings, everyone laughed with genuine intent. They actually found it funny. I know I did. It was silly and cute. Nothing more.

Just watched the movie and it's kinda like expected.

-The fighting scenes were awesome and were straight-up CGI-porn. It was a bit hard to follow sometimes because most of them took place in the water, though.
-The story wasn't anything really worth mentioning and was full of clichés and I wish they had spent less focus on it.
-I also thought the acting of Raleigh was off pretty much throughout the entire thing.
-Dr. Newton was basically Charlie, which I liked, but felt out of place in some scenes.
-Those are some damn strong helicopters.

Overall I liked the movie, but I can't help but wonder what it would've been like had the story and universe been a tad more grounded. The over-the-top fighting scenes could've stayed, but they could've definitely done more interesting things with the story.

Loved the movie. Hated the Australian accents and the nerdy professor guy. Why not just hire some damn Australians instead of Americans who are terrible at doing the aussie accents?

Fair enough.

It's not even a case of lower standards. GDT is a very visual filmmaker, especially in his English language projects. Knowing him as a director, as well as the genre of the film, it promised only one thing. Fucking spectacular robot vs monster battle scenes. The plot is basic summer blockbuster fluff, Armageddon in the ocean. It's not quite leave your brain at home, but almost. Remembering how you thought Power Rangers looked at age 10 helps.

So this comes out tomorrow in Japan. It's on pace to make more at the BO in China than North America. Interested to see if it will perform even better in JP than China.

We hire Australians cuz they do better Americans! :p

American accent is the easiest to replicate because the world basically consumes american media, it's harder the other way around unless an american focuses their attention on just one country from one region.

Funny enough, Chuck Hansen was played by a Brit. It was his dad that was played by an American.

I don't see how anyone who witnessed the "cats are in the apocalypse" trailer(s) would scoff at being sold a bill of goods they didn't expect. The dialog was clearly presented as Saturday morning cartoon/old monster movie fare, and that's exactly what was delivered.

Well a lot of reviews like the one from evilore made out like this movie didn't have the usual big lull in the middle of the movie. I didn't go into this expecting like an hour straight of the boring plot. Also the trailers i saw didn't showcase the worst of the dialogue because they didn't show the laughably bad scientist characters. I like a good B movie and i enjoy cheesy dialogue but this wasn't funny on any level.

I still enjoyed the movie but i wish some of the early reviews gave a more accurate description of what would actually be in the movie.

The younger 'Austrailian' was played by an English fella, Robert Kazinsky. It wasn't a great imitation though.

Fun fact: he was meant to be one of the 13 dwarves in the Hobbit trilogy, but had to pull out early on.

I get that some people are not going to like this movie for whatever reason, as if they were expecting some robot masterpiece (There Will Be No Robots from PTA). If one does not like it, just wish Del Toro and the cast the best and move on. This movie was supposed to appeal to both kids and adults.

The point of a movie like this is to go in, watch it and have fun. Great cast, great action and a lot of hard work went into making it. A LOT of hard work that has to be appreciated.

Had a good time watching it last weekend for the third time, when Ron Perlman appeared on screen an enthusiastic woman in the theater exclaimed "Oh shit!" Good times.

GAF, I did my part.

Watched PR in IMAX opening weekend, and I finally took the lady to watch it in IMAX last night, which happened to be my theater's last night to show PR in IMAX. My lady enjoyed it, but said it was really intense. I was just smiling the whole time.

I did my part.

To each their own, I guess. I got exactly what I was expecting from two trailers and a couple of early GAF reviews (Evilore being one of them). I also thought the two hours went by pretty fast, so I didn't feel any lull in the movie.

Since I love GDT I did my part and watched 2nd time in 3D. Enjoyed it a lot more that way, better screen and sounds too.

The dialog may be dumb but I love how earnest and non-cynical the movie is.

Best movie of the year. God damn that was awesome. Just one word is enough to describe this: FUN. I really can't understand how this is not printing money. It's love letter to the people that go to movie theather to watch movies. A movie that really takes advantage of the bigger screen and better sound systems. Hopefully China and Japan can salvage this as we (US&Europe) failed.

The international sales can't be big enough to make this movie a genuine standalone success, but it might be enough that the studio decides to try to force a franchise.

Yeah. Kinda thought that at least with international sales it could break even and then make some money from merchandise and home video sales. Then if those are enough we could see sequel with even more asian influence to make it even more attractive to those markets. A man can hope at least =/. I just want sequel sooo bad. A long time since I had this much fun in a movie.

One Piece is huge franchise.

i know, didn't think the movie would earn that much tho.

Tomorrow (or today) the movie FINALY starts showing here in Brazil.

And I heard there will be special sessions near my city with JAPANESE DUBBED COPIES of the movie

I am curious.... anyone would want to see the movie this way ?

I don't think the Japanese opening will be that impressive. Godzilla movies and other giant monster movies usually did decent business, and enough to make their (fairly modest) budgets back, but they didn't really light the charts on fire for the most part.

Someone upthread said that kaiju movies don't sell well in Japan at all...King Kong vs. Godzilla is still the box office leader.
