PAL Charts - Week 40, 2014

Driveclub is one of those games that looks really popular when you look at Gaf. But in the real world people are like "what the fuck is Driveclub?".

I will also predict a DC bomba. It has almost no WOM outside of here.

(Disclaimer: I don't actually like seing games bomba. But I do like guessing which ones will)

Quite a lot of chages to UK charts over the last couple of weeks:

Increased Chart Positions:

NINTENDO Wii U (ALL PRICES): Top 10 > Top 20
PC (FULL PRICE): Top 20 > Top 30
PC (BUDGET PRICE): Top 20 > Top 40
SONY PLAYSTATION 4 (ALL PRICES): Top 10 > Top 20
SONY PLAYSTATION VITA (ALL PRICES): Top 10 > Top 20
XBOX ONE (ALL PRICES): Top 10 > Top 20

Decreased Chart Positions:

NINTENDO 3DS (FULL PRICE): Top 10 > Top 5
NINTENDO DS (FULL PRICE): Top 8 > Discontinued
NINTENDO DS (BUDGET): Top 40 > Discontinued
NINTENDO DS (ALL PRICES): NEW > Top 30
NINTENDO WII (FULL PRICE): Top 5 > Discontinued
NINTENDO WII (BUDGET): Top 40 > Discontinued
NINTENDO WII (ALL PRICES): NEW > Top 30

See, now I know you're making shit up.

Ms have never released sales data for Forza Horizon, so we've no idea what it's total sales are. If you have a link, please provide.

You know the other week when you were outraged because somebody questioned some hilariously made-up figures of yours with 'tales from your ass?'

I really don't like your tone. Rather respond to me in a civilised manner, or feel free to ignore the post.

WOM* says practice what you preach, mate.

* Used incorrectly for thread consistency.

weird, why is the 3DS getting cut from 10 to 5 when the Wii U is getting bigger charts lol

P.S. Bruno MB it should read week 40 for UK charts not week 39 :P

Isnt it releasing in a relatively quiet week?
Could see it being Nr.1 for one week and drop out of the top 5 when COD hits.

October to December is generally a very busy period. Sunset is a precarious position where if it doesn't make a big splash, it will be lost in the wake of other big hitters are coming virtually non stop in the weeks after.

Sunset will sell fine dude. I think it does ok at launch but strong word of mouth will increase sales over the coming months.

WoM generally only works with digital titles. I'm not discounting that WoM is real, you only need to look at what happened with RDR, but it's not going to help when that WoM will be lost in talk of GTA5, CoD, Assassins Creed, etc.

You called that FH2 placement Miles

Gut feeling pays off again.

I was surprised that SoM didn't take the top spot. Seemed very popular when I was in Game over the weekend. Almost everyone in the queue ahead of me had a copy of it in their hand.

There were literally no copies left of the ps4 som in my local town today. I went looking because of the game bundle. Probably going to have a decent second week.

While we don't have number, it's generally agreed that Horizon 1 didn't perform as well as mainline. That can be put down to the complete lack of marketing from MS.

Seems they learned their lesson with Horizon 2, glad to see it do well. Hopefully it has some legs.

I also noticed that the PS4 version in particular was hard to find in some shops. My local Sainsburys had the sold out sign up for the PS4 version, didn't see any X1 copies either, but there wasn't a sold out sign, so they might have moved them closer to the checkout tills.

Should have decent legs going forward.

why do they have full price/budget/all prices in the first place?

The sales threads often enough have questions like "why is Pokemon Black / Skate 3 / Minecraft / ... so high?". A separate list for < 20 buck games (or whatever the cutoff is) makes the analysis easier.

I guess for people who are more interested in revenues rather than copies sold.

And also this, I agree.

ah I see

why not just a separate revenue chart then instead though?

why do they have full price/budget/all prices in the first place?

It dates back to the 80s when £1.99 software started to dominate the charts, so they split the charts between budget and full price. This kept publishers (who funded the charts through ELSPA) happy as they could still claim #1 spot. It's why Chart-Track has so many charts, to keep everybody happy.

They have that too.

I see that. But for a game from the makers of Halo and the company that makes COD sell 10 million + each year I expected it to have longer legs then your average B tier publisher game.

Well, it's a week with many new releases, and then there's 4 SKUs of FIFA on top. It'll have better legs than Smash, Mordor and Horizon.

Interesting week. Smash seems to have fairly average sales albeit it is the UK so that's not entirely unexpected I suppose. FH2 seems to have done okay? I really don't know too much about Forza sales historically so we'll see how that goes. Glad to see Shadow of Mordor do well. Co-marketing seems to have no real world effect though [37% in favor of PS4 over XB1 when the PS4 likely has a 50% higher install base and co-marketing isn't exactly amazing].

Minecraft PS4 got an interesting jump because of physical. Makes me wonder about Driveclub's performance. Yes it is much cheaper online, yes it's cheaper to PS+ members but I do think there is a large portion of console gamers averse to DD still, not that I think DC won't bomb next week though just that digital may not be its saving grace. So what' the best comparison for DC sales anyways? Motorstorm I guess?

Isn't it odd that PS4 Destiny generated more revenue this week than 360 FH2 having sold less copies? Prices appear to be near the same for the games.

Nevermind checked Game UK as well and Destiny PS4 appears to be 6 GBP more expensive

everything above PS4/XB1 Destiny is either FIFA or a new game, I'm not seeing it

wow that's a lot of different charts hanging around

DC will do well at retail. Probably similar to or higher charting than Horizon 2. Sony need to start advertising the game though.

They were apparently due to start today, but I haven't seen a single ad to the five Horizon 2 ones I've seen so far.

They are someone already seen a ad in the UK.

Marketing is a major component of modern game sales and Driveclub is really in such an odd state for a game, originally intended as a launch game and now a year later with a seemingly lackluster advertising campaign I have no idea how it will do. Here's hoping it does well enough for Evolution but I'm not so sure about that

Console bundle perhaps?

Yes, they split bundle revenue between hardware and software.

Ah okay that makes perfect sense then

Why would people expect Super Smash Bros to debut higher on Wii U?
This has never happened for any of the similar games across both platforms, like New Super Mario Bros, Super Mario 3D, Mario Kart, Lego City. It also didn't happen for Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, when the 3DS version was severely lacking compared to the Wii U game, and both launched simultaneously.

The difference in units is likely very small, and Destiny has a lot more CE/LE stuff than FH2 360, I guess. It has nothing to do with console bundles.

Black Friday week was my reason.
Assuming it's 11/21

Black Friday is not a European thing.
I don't think so at least.

Oh, nevermind.

I could still see it being close maybe. Someone mentioned MK8 did 70K I think?
Maybe Smash could do 40ish? November sales are higher than usual right, even without Black Friday?

Not that it really matters I guess. The success of Wii U smash is based more heavily on Japan, US, and the European countries where the Wii U isn't failing as horribly. It won't do "well" in the UK no matter what.

The 2.8m announcement for Smash 3DS does include an extra week of Japan sales that we don't have yet, right?

so that means ~1.3m for the west

jesus, the truly shocking thing here is the wii version.

Bull, its a way for a few American-managed stores to try and drum up business with really shit discounts.

That's the same reason it exists in America. The facts are that the amount spent on Black Friday in the UK is significantly increasing each year, and the number of retailers participating increases each year. Many of them like John Lewis, Argos, Currys/PC World are British, not American.

So no, my comment wasn't "Bull", but based in fact.

Germany charts are up now, someone post them.

The free Plus edition and cheap upgrade should see it sell fine. Retail sales will be hard to judge vs digital though.
