PAL Charts - Week 44, 2012

It probably is, on a smaller scale.

When you put that kind of qualifier in front of it, it's no longer a system seller. Unless Vita sales doubled/tripled this week (like we saw in Japan for Project Diva), it'd be pretty safe to say the game didn't move any hardware.

It is a system seller for some. I know that you mean in general, which is probably what most people think about when they talk about something being a system seller.

The reason why i mentioned it is because i'm not sure that anyone claimed that AC:L would boost the hardware sales a lot in the UK. I could be wrong of course, but i cant remember to have seen anything about that.

True, but i'm not sure that anyone here have made such claim about Assassins Creed Liberation. I've seen some claims that it could be a system seller for some, but not that it would boost the hardware sales a lot for a long period of time.

Yep, it is possible to describe almost every game as a system seller indeed :) This is afterall very subjective, which game that makes one decide to buy a system.

Well for people who still think Vita has a chance Liberation was at the top of the list on why it wouldn't have a terrible holiday so there were definitely some people who think there would be more than a 1 week boost.

Maybe not the UK specifically but in general worldview terms Call of Duty And Liberation are it for Vita this holiday.

How much boost did it have?

Impressive Liberation sales considering the number of Vita hardware units sold in the UK.

10k would be around 5% of the install base.

UK PSVita sales:

- Launch week (February), 61k
- After 10 weeks (May), 100k

So if we assume it has sold at a pace of 5k a week, as of September it would be around 180k units.

I think we'll get a better sense of how Liberation is doing in the November NPDs (with a few leaks because it won't be in the top 10) because to be fair the UK market is terrible right now especially for portables. Layton also had a much worse drop than I thought after an already mediocre start.

Also looking back one of Nintendo's biggest mistakes will be to have launched B/W2 on the DS.

Probably the drop in the chart is more due to the many big releases this week. Just saying, Skylanders as a whole dropped just 16%, but the various SKUs dropped 5-6 positions. Even Just Dance 3 had a big chart drop. I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't drop that much from last week.

EDIT. Another example of what I'm saying: Just Dance 4 did the same compared to last week, but it dropped 7 places in chart

EDIT2: The proof Layton didn't drop that much
Last week

06 (06) WII Just Dance 4 (Ubisoft)
07 (__) 3DS Professor Layton And The Miracle Mask (Nintendo)
08 (03) WII Skylanders Giants (Activision Blizzard)
09 (05) 360 Skylanders Giants (Activision Blizzard)

Skylanders Giants: Wii - 46%; 360 - 35%

This week

13 (06) WII Just Dance 4 (Ubisoft)
14 (08) WII Skylanders Giants (Activision Blizzard)
15 (07) 3DS Professor Layton And The Miracle Mask (Nintendo)
16 (09) 360 Skylanders Giants (Activision Blizzard)

Just Dance 4 didn't drop at all, Skylanders Giants dropped just 16% ( Wii - 44%; 360 - 34%)

This means Layton should have dropped just around 20% compared to last week, given that Just Dance 4 was lower than 15k last week ( lower than Dishonored's 3rd week) and, probably, around 11k...just like this week.

True, I don't know how much Vita got boosted by, but how much could a game that sold less than 10k boost hardware by? Unless Vita was selling like 2-3k a week I don't see how it could be.
The boost is probably pretty small if i should guess, i agree with that. No arguement from me against that :) Personally i'm not expecting big things to happen.

I just wanted to comment earlier regarding what those people ment with it being a system seller (my guess that is, i dont know for sure what they ment). It could be that they were thinking about the worldwide market and for the whole holiday :) Regarding it being for the whole holiday, it is unfortunately very hard to say because this is the first holiday for the Vita in the west, so it is nothing to compare it to. It would also just be a guess how much it would have sold if these games didnt excist.

EDIT: By the way, are there any specific numbers people think about if AC:L (and Black Ops Declassified) will be seen as system sellers for this upcoming holiday season? It will be quite a while before we get the hardware numbers through Nintendo reports however, but i'm curious =)

Biggest PS Vita debuts:

1. Uncharted: Golden Abyss (Sony Computer Ent.) - At least over 34.000 units.
2. Fifa Football (Electronic Arts) - At least over 19.700 units.
3. Assassin's Creed III Liberation (Ubisoft) - below 10.500 units.
4. LittleBigPlanet PS Vita (Sony Computer Ent.) - (11.000 after 2 weeks.)

5. Unit 13 (Sony Computer Ent.) - over 4.700 and below 5.900
6. Gravity Rush (Sony Computer Ent.)
7. Metal Gear Solid HD Collection (Konami) - slightly behind Unit 13 and Gravity Rush

Fifa 13 (Electronic Arts) - 5.000

It's very likely that Unit 13 sold a few hundred more units than Fifa 13, the problem is that we don't know the exact sales figures for Gravity Rush and Metal Gear Solid HD. I guesstimate Fifa 13 is between Unit 13 and Gravity Rush but it's impossible to know. Anyway these 4 titles debuted with similar numbers.

Not sure how anyone could consider those AC Liberation sales impressive.

It's the most heavily promoted Vita game to date in one of the biggest gaming franchises and it debuted at just ~10k, a lower debut than two Vita launch titles (despite having the advantage of a much larger userbase to sell to).

I'm sure both Sony and Ubisoft were hoping for much more than this.

Yes, Forza 4 has extremely long legs (as did the previous Forza games). It still has a long way to go to match Forza 3, though. Forza 3 has 4.5 million players on its leaderboards, Forza 4 has 3.0 million.

I don't think FM3 got 3 million on leaderboards in the first year (2 million at max?).

Denying that Liberation was considered by many the second biggest, if not the biggest, title for Vita this holiday, and that would have boosted the sales of the console on more decent numbers is incredible.

Maybe i'm misunderstand you now, but are you accusing me of denying these things? If yes, why do you think that? I used phrases like "i'm not sure", "i could be wrong" and "i cant remember" all in the same paragraph that you quoted me on. This is not denying, and all of these things were referring to the UK market.

I simply cant remember to have seen anyone saying that the Vita sales would be boosted a lot in the UK because of AC:L. But i hope that you can link to these posts where someone claimed that AC:L would boost the Vita hardware in the UK a lot, i'd like to see them :) I havnt mentioned, nor have anyone else as far as i can see, said that AC:L and CoD Declassified isnt the biggest Vita titles for this holiday season.

I have seen that someone have said that it could be a system seller for some regarding worldwide sales, but i dont know how much they expected it to boost the hardware. I wrote earlier that i was just guessing what they ment, because exactly how much boost that were expecting is very subjective. That is also why i asked the question how much Vita hardware that would have to sell in this holiday for AC:L and CoD:Declassified to be concidered as system sellers.

Wow, Farming Simulator was #1 in Germany last week?

I've been intrigued... only $22 on GMG, I think I'm going to grab it.

Latest MCV UK report says:

October 2012 Software
Revenue: £83m (-29.8%)
Units: 2.83m (-29.5%)

October 2012 (by units, all formats)
1. FIFA 13
2. Resident Evil 6
3. Dishonored
4. Skylanders Giants
5. Medal of Honor: Warfighter

EA is top publisher for the month, followed by Capcom, Bethesda, and then Nintendo.

Units share: Xbox 360 (40.5%), PS3 (28.8%), NDS (8.7%), Wii (8.3%), PC (7.3%), 3DS (4.2%), PSV (1.6%), PSP (0.6%), PS2 (0.1%)

For the curious that means that PSV sold 45K units of software total in the four weeks of October's period.

Microsoft’s ‘Halo 4’ debuts at No1 and arrived on Tuesday 6th November as the 16th event title launch of the year (normally defined as a Tuesday/Wednesday release).

There are only two more event titles to come this year, with ‘Black Ops II’ next week and ‘Hitman Absolution’ the following week – this total of 18 event games in 2012 is a record, up from 11 games in 2011. ‘Halo 4’ sold slightly more units than last week’s PS3/360 ‘Assassin’s Creed III’ (itself an event title from Wednesday 31st October) and ‘Halo 4’ ranks as the 18th biggest SKU launch in terms of week 1 units, but does not beat 2007’s ‘Halo 3’ (15th biggest SKU) or indeed 2010’s ‘Halo: Reach’ (12th biggest SKU). Ubisoft’s ‘Assassin’s Creed III’ drops to No2 (-73%), ahead of EA’s ‘FIFA 13’ at No3 (-13%). EA’s ‘Need For Speed: Most Wanted’ at No4 (-28%) exchanges places with Sega’s ‘Football Manager 2013’, now No5 (-47%).

Activision’s ‘Skylanders Giants’ climbs 2 places to No6 (+7%) and THQ drop 4 places to No7 with ‘WWE 13’ (-60%). The TV-advertised deal for ‘Borderlands 2’ certainly had an effect – the title climbs 11 places to No8, up 180% over last week. Ubisoft’s ‘Just Dance 4’ remains at No9 (+10%) and EA’s ‘Medal of Honor: Warfighter’ drops 4 places to No10 (-65%). The only other new entry in the Top 40 this week is Sony’s PS3 ‘LittleBigPlanet Karting’ at No24.

bombed, and it launched in Nov, Reach and 3 were in Sep, you'd think it should sell a bit better than those.

Oh come on it hardly bombed 0_o, it should have performed better than Reach and 3 I agree, being in Nov. Perhaps COD is going to affect sales more than MS and most others assumed.

Reach is 3 places above Halo 3 in terms of Skus and it only sold 20k more. Halo 4 is only 3 skus from Halo 3 so it could easily be the same.

Halo 4: 340k~?
Halo 3: 360k~?
Reach: 380k~

This is just bullshit cooked up in my brain since I haven't played Halo since 3 but I think franchise fatigue and CoD are to blame if sales are falling short from before even tho 4 seems to be one of if not the best game in the series. Far too early to tell tho, US sales are where it's at with Halo.

Yeah, it use to not have competition. Now it has to compete with COD, BF and Gears, it's lost some of it's audience to those games.

Holiday Effect? About a dozen Kinect titles moved up the 360 charts and Kinect Star Wars is in the all formats top 40 full price chart.

Wonderbook launched this week or it will appear in next week?

Liberation bombing and Layton not as big as it used to be. :/

Death at LBP Kart.
The new Layton game being on 3DS meant it was never going to be as big as it used to because it no longer has such a big install base. The Layton games main demographic is casual people and they aren't likely to buy a new system for one game and until now there hasn't really been any major casual games on the 3DS like the DS had.
Assuming the next Layton game comes out next year, it'll be interesting to see how that does because the 3DS will presumably have Animal Crossing and Brain Training by then.

Not bad from halo but i think there is no doubt that MS would have been hoping it would top all the previous entries in the series. Then again the UK market overall is doing pretty shit right now so it will be interesting to see how it performs WW.

Incredible amount of adverts on the UK music channels, it was never off KISS.

And Halo 4 is a 'bomb', what classification does LBP Karting receive?

More than half the stuff I watch is through PVR recordings and obviously I skip the ads but I've still seen tonnes of commercials for it, second only to dance central 3 and that really does seem a massive bomba
