Palestinians have torched a Jewish holy site in the West Bank city of Nablus, amid soaring tensions with Israel. Rioters set fire to a tomb which Jews revere as that of the biblical figure Joseph. Firefighters put out the blaze but the site was badly damaged.

It came hours after Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu called on the Palestinian leadership to stop a wave of attacks. There have been near-daily stabbings by Palestinians of Israelis this month, as violence between the two sides spirals.

Seven Israelis have been killed and dozens wounded in stabbings and shootings. At least 30 Palestinians, including several of the attackers, have also been killed in the growing unrest. The upsurge began last month when tensions at a flashpoint holy site in Jerusalem revered by Jews and Muslims boiled over amid rumours Israel planned to relax long-standing rules to increase Jewish rights at the complex. Israel has repeatedly denied such claims.

Damn that's crazy, I'm foggy in my religion history but I do remember that being an extremely important site.

This will not end well.

That's like the 5th time it was burned.
Fuck that place, it has no historical significance, it's one of the oh so many random sheikh tombs in the west bank that people decided based on dreams or whatever that they're burial places of biblical figures, it's not even that old of a structure, it's late 19th century.
Too many people died over that bullshit.

What did the Israelis do to provoke this?
Joseph's tomb is smack in the middle of Nablus just at the edge of a big refugee camp, it used to be a settlement that had some of the craziest and most racist religious zealots of the settlers (and that's saying something). It was abandoned in 2000 because it became to costly to guard that bullshit place, but Israeli still go to visit it with military escort from time to time which almost always mean putting large parts of the city under curfew.
As such, it had become a symbol of Israeli occupation for the Palestinians, and seeing how it is usually has no people guarding it it became a rather popular target for them to vent their frustration at.
