Paragon, MOBA from Epic Games (PC/PS4, 2016) [Up: First Gameplay, Crossplatform, F2P]

How do I sign up for the beta? I saw there was a "sign up for beta" in the upper right corner, but as soon as I logged into the website, that option was gone.

Just registering on the site gave me this email. YOU’RE SIGNED UP
DECEMBER 7, 2015

Thanks for registering for Paragon.

We’re excited to invite people to start playing the game over the next few months. Online testing will begin in January, followed by paid Early Access in Spring, and Open Beta in Summer 2016.

Some players will be invited into online testing, but everyone who signs up will have the opportunity to play before the game goes to Open Beta in Summer. When the time comes, you’ll receive an email with installation instructions and additional details.

Make sure to keep tabs on Paragon.com, where we’ll share new information about our Heroes, card and replay systems, gameplay videos and more. Also, visit the Prepare for Victory section of the website to unlock in-game cards that you’ll receive the first time you play the game.

Paragon is coming to PC and PlayStation 4.

Thanks for your support. GLHF,

- The Epic Games Team

Huh?

I don't really understand what you're getting at. It's exceedingly unlikely for that to happen. Epic is in a great position financially, and even if the game fails to gain the traction they want, there's absolutely no reason for them to risk losing goodwill by such a move.

Remember, this is the company developing a new UT with fan involvement seemingly mostly for the fun of it.

I mean, money. Having a lot of it doesn't necessarily indicate you're willing to lose it. They would only let Paragon bleed money for so long before bandaging the wound.

Also, what does Epic care about losing good will? They're in the engine business more than anything else. You said yourself, UT seems like a pet project. If Paragon doesn't take off, I could see them pulling the plug without much of a controversy. What will the vocal minority do? Boycott games that run on UE4?

Looking forward to the betas. That gameplay video looks good, I'll be keeping a eye out for more coverage.

I'm loving these cross platform games, especially since I still haven't gotten PS+, and it helps the community.

Not really into Mobas but this looks very cool.

Unfortunately crossplay, not to mention KBM support on the PS4 kills any interest for me.

Oh well, at least I can watch some pretty graphics :-)

Maybe they'd stop adding content to it, but keeping some servers running is really not all that expensive in the grand scheme of things.

from their CM regarding eSports

https://www.reddit.com/r/paragon/co...f_paragon_go_all_in_and_set/cxr0o98?context=3

Hey I'm actually one of the guys on the team that is looking at eSports, but I'm going to be very honest right now...we're 100% committed to making the game fun. We want to put tools in place that give players the ability to play in a competitive environment. We'll humbly wait for you all to determine if we're an esport; we won't make that declaration. We've witnessed too many incidents where players become riled up on large eSports initiatives before the community is there to play. We want to build a great experience WITH you all and will look to you all for feedback on how we can improve.

I was a former pro player on the console side (Gears of War) and a major advocate for competitive gaming. We have a lot of passionate folks on the team that want to support the community in whatever manner we can.

His point about eSports is something a lot of other developers should listen to. All you can do as a developer is include what tools you think will help the game become a viable eSports title, but the community ultimately decides on just how viable it is. It's hard to count how many devs have talked a big game when it comes to that issue. I think on some level it may even be a turn off with a new IP because it sorta makes it sound like it's not going to be an accessible title when you just constantly talk about how it's an eSports game.

Got a survey from Epic last night to determine if I'll be in the first batch for the beta....hopefully my data is valuable haha. I'm in the uk, I think that's make or break most times if I get in a beta or not. Either they want to test the code worldwide, or not at all ha. Fingers crossed.

Seriously. I like how they're willing to let it see if it happens but aren't fretting it if doesn't. I love Guild Wars 2, but Anet has been really pushing the games pvp as an Esport, even though all signs point to it sort of kind being dead. Yet they continue to push it at the detriment of the game.

are they serious with this crossplay bs? cant wait to be rekt by people with a much better control input and playing at 120 fps and a much better resolution.

devs are always like this, they think just because the playtests are fine that everything will be like that, they have their own little world and dont care about people out of it.

It works just fine in Rocket League.

Do we know there won't be an option to disable crossplay?

You drive a car in rocket league. A lot different

While it is different, the advantage of M/KB in a shooter is accuracy and mobility. Both of which are things that can limited given the game type.

If each character is a big hitbox with no special location based damage (i.e. no "headshots") then the accuracy advantage is nullified and if the player movement is limited by each hero then mobility isn't so big a problem either. If the gameplay looked twitchy like say TF2, Overwatch, Quake, etc.. then certainly M/KB would be advantageous. So far though, it doesn't look like that's the case, at least not for the majority of the heros shown in the gameplay trailer.

If it's going to be even a remotely successful moba then it will have skill based matchmaking which will sort all of that out anyway.

This looks to have melee classes and not just all ranged and for those m+k provide little benefit. Also for ranged classes we don't know that this plays just like a TPS. In most overhead mobas ranged classes actually plant their feet and stop moving while shooting, they could be doing something similar here or at least slowing down player movement while shooting. In fact in the video the ranged character does seem to stop to shoot frequently.

That said, we have players on both platforms playing against one another, and there doesn't appear to be any significant advantage to using either input device. Our top player plays on PC but uses a controller. :)

This is great to know however I know allot of people will overlook this info and still have there own opinions on the matter but I trust the developers more then anyone else who is not working on the games opinion on how it will play out. If the developers develop the game from scratch with kbm and controller in mind I am sure they will do there best to make sure the game is as balanced as possible with no significant advantages regarding input devices. A cross platform game like this will literally be DOA if the different input devices are not balanced.

i hope i can use my account for this game on both platforms, ps4 and PC.

Same for the paid beta. Want to test it on both platforms without paying twice :)

3.8m views on the reveal trailer already?!

I didn't expect their to be this much hype.

For the people that were wondering if it is F2P or retail. It is F2P.

Bleh, F2P with that card system... no thanks. I'll be waiting for Overwatch.

The turn speed of a mouse can allow for much faster change in direction than analog sticks.

For example, a player can be much more agile in Loadout on PC than they can in Loadout on PS4.
I was a lot more agile with a controller with Gears of War though.

When is that PC version of the Ultimate edition coming out anyway? :O

Edit: Derp! Didn't see Darryl M R's post.

Anyway, I really like the idea that our progress is also on both platforms. This reminds me of FFXIV honestly.

Which means the game will probably have it's own login system.

Gamespot interview:http://www.gamespot.com/articles/epic-talks-moving-from-gears-of-war-to-mobas-with-/1100-6432936/

Does this follow the same layout as what we know in League of Legends and Dota 2?

It does have core MOBA tropes. It has three lanes, it has towers, it has minions. However, we've made it a little different to adapt it to the 3D space and also keep it as something that's really easy to watch. It's a very open map. The map is sort of shaped like a bowl, so your spawn points are higher up and when you spawn in you can immediately look out across the map, look at the lanes, see where your teammates are, and figure out what you're going to do.

Beyond that, the lanes themselves are arranged in a high-mid-low layout as far as verticality goes. From the top lane, you can look down to the middle which then looks down to the lowest lane, so you can see people across the way interacting with one another.

Another difference that involves something inherent to MOBAs is the jungle--the difference for us is that it goes down in between the lanes. Part of the reasoning for that was so it wasn't a sight obstructor. You can actually see across the lanes without the jungle blocking your view, but it still serves the MOBA purpose of a jungle because it is that sort of area of mystery where, as you dive into it, you can't see what's underneath.

There's a jungle canopy that blocks the line-of-sight. So if I went all in on a team fight and just barely made it out with a few health, I could leap into the jungle and hope to lose whoever might be chasing me. But hopefully there isn't an enemy already in there. I won't know until I get down unless I've done some very careful warding, or I have another teammate who's in there, keeping an eye out for me.

You also have characters who have enough mobility to jump up out of the jungle into a lane and set up surprise attacks.

Is this going to be set up with a similar monetization system to League of Legends, where you buy characters and skins?

We're not going into too much detail about the monetization yet. What I can say is, yes, we're going to have many of the things that you see in other MOBAs, where you'll be able to buy characters.

One of the things that's really important with what Epic is trying to do is be really generous and respectful of the player. You can earn the things that affect gameplay and it will always be something you can do by playing the game.

the monetization scheme plus the cross play are already a killer for me. maybe i play some bot matches to see the graphics.

Interview said:
And there's been a big focus for our art team and our design team in trying to keep the experience beautiful, but have it be something that you can watch and understand.

That's another thing that's really important with our replay system; if it was just particle soup, you wouldn't be able to tell what was going on.

[...]
Another thing we're really proud of is being able to allow cross-progression. You'll be able to carry all of the things that you've earned on PC over to the PlayStation 4 and vice-versa. There's no limit on it, allowing you to take it back and forth. It gives people flexibility to play wherever they want.

[...]

As far as esports goes, it's something that we leave entirely up to the players and the community. We think it's really important that they're the people who decide if and when we ever become an esport.
Seems like they are avoiding some of the issues other MOBAS have (had). WC3 DotA and HoN were particularly difficult to watch.
The card system still has me worried a bit.

Friend of mine gets to playtest this at Epic tomorrow. So incredibly jealous.

He's NDA'd up the wazoo but if he says anything he can mention I'll be sure to post it here.

https://www.reddit.com/r/paragon/comments/3x3n5s/epic_games_paragon_event/

We're giving you all a heads up on any posts you may see about an event we're holding next month for Paragon at Epic Games.

A variety of players representing various communities, platforms (Twitch/YouTube), our previous Epic community members, and some players that have expressed very early interest in Paragon are being invited.

These players won't be the first players to play the game. They will be able to stream and or upload videos at the same time as everyone in the game at the time. We know and understand this is a concern for a number of content creators.

The purpose of the event is to build meaningful relationships with people that want to help Paragon or the greater Epic Games community to flourish. This is a first step in a greater plan to figure out how we can best serve all of you in the many ways that you play Paragon or interact with your own communities. In fact, a few members from the sub reddit have already been included.

Our goal is to celebrate the community and members that make it special.
