LOS ANGELES - Paramount Home Entertainment is the latest company to back the Blu-ray Disc format as the next-generation DVD standard.

Paramount said Sunday it will join a growing list of media and technology companies endorsing Blu-ray that includes Sony Corp., Apple Computer Inc., Hewlett-Packard Co. and Dell Inc.

Paramount will still market all its DVD movies in the competing HD DVD format so consumers can have a choice, company officials said.

Backers of HD DVD include Intel Corp., Microsoft Corp., Toshiba Corp., Universal Studios and others.

Paramount decided to support the Blu-ray format after an analysis of the cost and copy protection solutions available, according to a prepared statement. Paramount also said it was attracted by Blu-ray's storage capacity, which is five times that of current DVDs.

"We have been intrigued by the broad support of Blu-ray, especially the key advantage of including Blu-ray in PlayStation 3," said Thomas Lesinski, president of Paramount Pictures, Worldwide Home Entertainment.

Paramount will begin releasing its content in the Blu-ray format in North America, Japan and Europe when the hardware is available to support it.

So the PS3 is a key advantage to Blu-ray huh? How many people said that the PS3 wouldn't matter with the next-gen media? Looks like the PRESIDENT of Paramount Pictures disagrees. :)

Great, now who gives a shit?

Because the more support a single format gets, the less chance of the two formats competiting. If one side gets enough support, the other will drop. Thus you won't have all the problems 2 formats bring.

In a similiar thread in the gaming forum it seems to indicate Warner will soon follow.
Yup, there have been rumors about Warner doing this for weeks now. I hope they do, because while I am not planning on getting a standalone HD player anytime soon, I will be getting all the new consoles and I would like to play the HD version of Batman Begins on the PS3.

You worry about the format war?

Yes. It means a fractured market. Which means neither format will succeed and you'll need to own two different players. So who loses out on this? The consumer. Which is myself.

Or you could just stick to DVDs, or not buy either for a bit. Is the video quality really that much different that you would have to shell out a couple hundred bucks and then go right ahead, be my guest. Personally, I will be like most people and not give a shit for a while.

Then why wonder who gives a shit if you don't really? Sorry but when I buy a movie on a disc it would be really nice if I can watch in Hi Def 720p or higher like the few HD channels I get. If you don't care fine, but if you don't care about others reasons then really don't question them.

Why don't you just stick with full-screen vhs? You were probabaly saying same thing as dvd talk was coming out.

And when you do decide to give a shit in a couple years when all new movies are released in HD, you can buy players for less than $100, and good quality HDTV's are so cheap that they stop making SD sets, would you rather there be two formats or one?

It is better for everyone that this gets settled now.

How about no.

I haven't bought a DVD in about 3 years because I don't want to be some consumer whore that continually buys the same crap over and over again for new formats.

Blu ray will be the standard for HDTV movies, just like DVDs are now for standard def. Without the change to HD, there would be no reason to ditch DVDs. They would be like the CD of the movie market and would have lasted at least 20 years.

Blu ray will do the same. I won't have to redo my library again because it will all be in one format. When's the next time TV definitions standard will change? I'm thinking a long time from now. 1080p is pretty damn good considering the limits of our eyes.

Avoiding a format war is beneficial to consumers like me. If you can't see that, then the argument is a waste of time.
