Such a great little experiment on the PSone. Great turn-based/real-time battle system (that influenced Vagrant Story), rockin' soundtrack, cheesy-as-hell B-movie plot, and one of the best female leads in a game. BRING IT BACK, SQUARE.

First one was great. I played it for hours on end when I had my wisdom teeth removed. What happened to the second one anyways? Heard some bad things about it but nothing specific.

I never was able to get to the top of the Chrysler building. What happens when you get to the top? nice ending song to this game (first one, never played the other).

never played the second one, but I thought the first one was a pretty good. it had it's flaw sure but still the game was enjoyable

I hope SquareEnix revisit this series next gen.

I *heart* PE. Didn't the games sell pretty durned well too? I remember seeing both of them as greatest hits titles. What the hell Square. Buncha morons who run that company, lemme tell ya.

I haven't played either game, but I could probably walk up to the mom n' pops video store that's two blocks away from my house and buy both if I wanted to. They sold me an OG copy of Final Fantasy Tactics, complete and in near mint condition, for 10$ a while back.

There's a couple of PS1 rpgs I missed out on, I just acquired copies of Xenogears, Vagrant Story and Persona 2, but haven't gotten in to them yet because of other games I'm currently playing.

At the top of the Chrysler building, Aya meets her sister Maya, learns she was the "original" Eve, and fights her.

Here's hoping Aya's in KH2, after being dumped for Aeris in KH1.

They turned it into a lousy RE clone.

I don't believe I ever finished it, but I do own Parasite Eve on the PlayStation and I liked it quite a bit. The battle system was quite different.

That game had the coolest sense of style, in it's time it was the only thing to top RE. Of course now RE has received next gen benefits to improve atmosphere and everything.

ahh thanks. That building was impossible, there were like 30 floors or something, with really hard enemies.

I really liked this game, but I never could finish it, I fought a boss a couple of times on a boat or something and then gave up. How far from the end was this?

I think you were near the end of the game with 2 boss battles left. The boat is the last part of the game.

Definitely a game that's slagged off rather unfairly, IMO. I can understand that some people were disappointed that it wasn't a giant epic RPG, but I'd rather have a short game that doesn't wear out its welcome than a long, tedious one. The battle system is really fun (and, yeah, it definitely seems like a precursor to Vagrant Story) and the soundtrack is great. The story is bad, but I always found it adorably ridiculous, and at least it was fun to play an RPG set in something totally different from the standard anime identi-kit psuedo-medieval world.

i absolutely LOVED the first one
I thought it was a great game, and I still like it's system better than the traditional RE style (though obviously RE4 blows that away)

I really wish the rumors of Square remaking the first one for gamecube were true that would have been awesome

I'm one of the 7 people that really, really liked PE2... but mostly for the atmosphere/creature designs. That little roadside, Arizona (Nevada, wherever it was) town was just great... and the fight with that big, freaky elephant thing with the flame-thrower face kicked ass.
Great soundtrack, too.

There had been reports of a PE3 for the PS2 earlier in the generation, even some concept designs thrown around by Square, but it seemed to disappear after the Square/Enix merger.

VOTE PE3 for PS3! :D We need Aya back!

I rented PE once, but I loved it. Got about 70% though. Scary/creepy as hell and I loved the battle system. I've been wanting to go ahead and buy the game for years, but I don't have much time for RPGs. Then again, PE is a shortish game...

PE2 was a good game, it was fun, worth the time/money etc.

It may have lost the focus a little bit from PE1, but it was exciting to play and it certainly looked great.

I *heart* that old abandoned gas station level. Too awesome, a perfect change of pace from the other levels, and even other games in the same genre.

In fact, fuck you guys, PE2 was damn enjoyable, fuck the haters. You know, most games stay dark, more dark, and then some more dark, PE2 had those dark creepy stages, then it busted out with this uber cool desert stage gasstation/hotel with these fucked up zombie horses n' shit.

You could explore the hotel rooms, and for once every door you see you could actually enter (a rarity back in the 64/PSX days).

This is what I'm talking about:

IMO, Parasite Eve 2 was a Resident Evil 3 done right. Personally, I thought RE3 was fuckin boring as hell, PE2 was the perfect substitute. Yes, it was an RE clone but it had some cool RPG elements in addition to other things (given, I played the long several years ago)

Never played PE2. Guess I should I sorta enjoyed the first one, although I have a sneaking suspicion it might be mostly nostalgia for great characters. I remember beating the last boss only to take a wrong turn in the escape route scene and dying and having to do it all over again, that stank.

But hey any game that has you picking up ammo for a rocket launcher in a hospital is fine by me.

First RPG (well action-RPG hybrid) I beat in a single rental. It was pretty down to the wire though (back in the yesteryear of 3-day rental periods). I remember playing it nonstop the first two days, and the third day was a school day, so I had to finish the last boss (the multi-stage ship battle) in a hurry. Great game, fun to play, awesome visuals for the time, another reason Square circa 1998 gives me warm squishy memories. I quadruple-zillionth the suggestion, bring it back Squeenix!

Hmm... I never finished PE1. I got to the last boss, but it was too hard. I never bothered to go back and collect experience points, or whatever...

I loved the first PE. The atmosphere was so strong... nothing like running around in Central Park. Add in a quick battle system and a great OST, and you have what's maybe the ultimate Christmas game. :lol

PEII had its ups and downs. Once again, the locations were for the most part nicely designed, especially Dryfield and Neo Ark. The downside was that there weren't enough of them, but the worst flaw of the game was the unengaging story. I don't like how they wrapped up Aya's story, and hopefully a sequel will come along and more or less disregard PEII's plot.

I liked PE back in the day, but it's unplayable these days due to Aya's sluggish walking (and the thought of having to go through the ultra-annoying one-hit-death sequece after the final boss).

Survival horror in San Fran does not make a good sequel.

More like 75 or 76 floors. I loved the hell out of the first one. Since I didn't have a PS One at the time, I bought it as a "christmas" preset for a friend, when in actuality I hogged the game. I remember doing the Chrysler building twice: the first time I screwed up badly with my gun, and couldn't get past the boss of floor 50 or 60, the second I started over again and got it right.

The second PE disappointed me tremendously. I hate RE style controls, but I tried to put up with it. The story and just general feel of the game just didn't jive with me, and to make matters worse, my copy of PE2 freezes at the conversation before the last boss fight starts. I'll be goddamned if I'm gonna buy or rent it just for 30 minutes of more gameplay.

Yeah

I adored this game when it came out back in the day. Never got to play the second one, though never really wanted to when I saw how they did away with the original RPG system and opted for more of the REtype gameplay.

I just remeber the last fight was fucking hard! :D

PE one was a very good game no doubt about that.

But saying PE2 is awful is an exaggeration, in the later days of PS1 was very high in graphics, good bosses, a few optional things you could do to unlock certain things to get more detailed endings.

if RE clone is a problem, you in the wrong genre game, as it is "partly" survival horror- Action RPG"

Ah the Chrysler building. There's 77 floors were you got to defeat the "true" form of the last boss. I remember having a hard time with the 50th floor boss. I think you could also only save after every boss fight. The first PE was one of my favorite games for the PS. PE2 wasn't as good but I still enjoyed it.

Pretty cool game with nice graphics, music, and a fun battle engine... I love the whole idea of playing an RPG set in NYC, even though it was a bit TOO short and easy and finished it in 2 days. Never got around to trying the sequel, I think reading reviews on some RPG sites that said it was more action/survival horror oriented and less RPG, really scared me off.

Yeah, they pretty much took away most of the things that made the original PE unique and great and replaced them with typical survival horrorish stuff, such as RE controls and shitacular camera angles.

Loved the first, hated the second. You can probably find it for 5 bucks or so at EB, but I wouldn't even bother.
