Parents Want Gay Men's Sons Expelled by The Associated Press

Costa Mesa, Calif. -- Some parents and parishioners have accused the Roman Catholic diocese in Orange County of violating church doctrine by allowing a gay couple to enroll their children in a church school. The group demanded that St. John the Baptist School in Costa Mesa accept only families that pledge to abide by Catholic teachings, the Los Angeles Times reported in Sunday's editions. Church doctrine opposes gay relationships and adoption by same-sex couples. "The teachings of the church seem to have been abandoned," John R. Nixon told the Times. "We send our children to a Catholic school because we expect and demand that the teachings of our church will be adhered to."

School officials rejected the demand, and issued a new policy stating that a family's background "does not constitute an absolute obstacle to enrollment in the school." The parents' demand would presumably prevent two adopted boys whose parents are both men from attending the school's kindergarten. The Rev. Gerald M. Horan, superintendent of diocese schools, said that if Catholic beliefs were strictly adhered to, then children whose parents divorced, used birth control or married outside the church would also have to be banned. "This is the quagmire that the parents' position represents," he said. "It's a slippery slope to go down."

The boys' parents, who enrolled their children at the beginning of the school year, declined to comment to the Times. Some parents have promised to ask the Vatican to intervene, and some have threatened to pull their children from the school. Others are worried the boys' attendance will set a precedent, saying their presence is part of a larger effort by the gay community to change the church. "The boys are being used as pawns by these men to further their agenda," said Monica Sii, who has four children at the school. USA Today

Stupid fucking parents. Why do you have to send your kids to this school?

"Sure, I don't have any friends and everyday I am harassed and beaten up by bigoted 11-year-old thugs....but my two dads were able to strike a tiny blow for gay rights, and that makes it all worth while."

It reminds me of the deal with that prestigous military school (The Citadel?), where some woman whined and whined to be admitted, and then quit after a year -- presumably because she was being treated like shit. It is really hard to put my finger on where it lies, but I think there is a difference between refusing to sit at the back of the bus, and just trying to scream your way into places where you aren't wanted and wouldn't want to be in the first place.

Maybe I'm wrong and the kid has friends that are going to that school and really wants to stay enrolled with them, but this sounds too much like a couple of idiot activists that want to use their children as pawns. I'm not entirely sure why you would want your kids in a school that will teach them that you are a sinful, hellbound pervert...

Isn't this old?

Anyways. Private, religious school. Parents send their kids to these schools so that they can reinforce the religious ideals taught in the home. It would not be expected by many parents that the school would accept children of homosexual parents. These same parents would be quite compelled to remove their kids from that school, and with good reason. I heard testimony that 10th graders-from this catholic school-were confused about the idea of whether it was okay to have two dads. Ignoring whether you agree with the church or not on the subject of homosexuals/homosexuality the school is clearly NOT doing its job.

You'd be surprised how many parents want their kids to NOT be exposed to progressive secularism when they send them to parochial schools.

To place taking birth control at the same level as homosexuality is one thing (as well as divorce... a person who divorces due to the infidelity is not in sin) but to actually screen families to make sure that both parts of the equation fit, i.e. that the school and parents expectations and the attitudes of the children mesh, WOULD actually be welcome.

BTW, I love how non-christians feel so free to criticize the internal debates within and between christian churches. It's not your world guys. You have to subscribe to a whole different worldview.. you have to invest into it. Many of you simply aren't qualified to look at this kind of stuff objectively. You have NOTHING invested in it. We keep getting exposed because we have hundreds of denominations and many more leaders, all imperfect and many with their own agendas... to criticize the entirety of the faith based on individuals or individual debates is ridiculous. Expected, but ridiculous.

When will the owning end!!??boobs

I went to Catholic school for ten years. I'd have no problem with it.

Rev. Horan is right, if you adhered to strict Catholic doctrine, the kids of divorced couples should also not be allowed into school (if you're Protestant knock yourself out). And most people divorce simply because they get sick of each other, not because of infidelity.

I don't buy that interpretation of the Bible that gays should be discrimnated against. There is a verse in Leviticus in the Old Testament I believe that speaks against "men laying with other men" or something to that effect, but if you follow the laws of Leviticus you also cannot eat pork, shrimp, etc. This what Paul cites to reinforce his beliefs, but Paul never even knew Jesus and Jesus never even addressed the issue.

Paul had some other beliefs which IMO were pretty wacky too, like a man having long hair is a disgrace to himself and so on. My personal interpretation of the Bible is that there was a power struggle between James and Paul for the establishment of the orthodox church and Paul simply won out, because his teachings would facilitate an easier adoption for the Roman gentile/pagan Empire, even though many of his teachings really don't line up with what Jesus taught.

Jesus taught more or less a liberal, compassionate version of existing Judaism.

I also went to a Catholic school. But they were pretty reasonable (maybe because it's Vancouver). The worst, which wasn't so bad, was when a guy had to remove a Gay Pride necklace from around his neck. The principal saw it as "inciting".

I think the school officials should go down the slippery slope, just to make a point of what jackasses the parents are being.

Shouldn't you be saying "Fuck, I hate ignorant religious people?" Because the organization isn't the one wanting to outcast the gay parents and child. Apparently, they accept them, even if they don't accept their lifestyle.

No, that's OK.

The first sentence acknowledged the individuals involved. But the second sentence was meant to be more general.
