Why would you feel bad for her though? She's got enough money to go swimming in a Scrooge McDuck's money vault. Ignorance is not a defense. She's said racist shit. Let her cry on her mountain of money. I don't feel sorry for her at all. Also, how could she not realize what she said wasn't racist as fucking all hell?

The thing that gets me is that when she was asked if she ever used the word n***** before, her response was, "Of course." O_o

Why is it whenever someone from the South does something stupid, bullshit ignorant generalizations like this start flying around here? Does it honestly need to be said in every similar thread that the South wasn't even a hive mind during the Civil War? Do we really have to be serenaded about how every white Southerner is George W. Bush barefoot in a straw hat on an episode of Hee Haw with a shotgun under one arm and a copy of Uncle Tom's Cabin under the other?

It seems a bit petty and arbitrary for her to lose her show & whatnot based on some bad things she said long ago and only exposed in a deposition.

But on the other hand, she's made millions so I'm not going to pity her. Let some new chefs in to play in the sandbox. It is nice for everyone to see racism punished with social pressure.

She's not going to prison, she's not going to be poor, she's just not going to be as famous anymore (maybe). Yeah . . . no pity.

She will be back. Probably not at her current level, because racism is one of those things some people can't forgive, even if she somehow becomes a reformed former racist.

I am shocked, shocked, at the number of people i am seeing on my social network feeds that are saying enough is enough in going after her. A lot of people seem to be forgiving, and a large number of people, just don't see what the problem is.. I guess because they are racists themselves.

Here's what America loves to do to celebrities....they like to bring them down. Its the modern day equivalent of the Roman Gladiator arena where they want to feed you to the lions if you fuck up..and IF you survive it, you can find some redemption at some point down the line because Americans also love comeback stories.

So while she may never get back to the height she was at before this happened, she will still find an audience out there somewhere. In probably less than 2-3 years, she will be back with another cooking show on another network, and she will still be selling cook books by the truckload and continue swimming in pools of money.

I'm not arguing about the shameful bullshit in the South's history, but does the fact that a majority of people were racist pigs simply negate the existence of people who weren't?

Actually, people around here are surprised that I don't have a gun, and I'm surprised anytime I meet someone around here that doesn't have one. And I live in Central Indiana in a city where there is no hunting to be had. Even the girls I know have guns around here.

If she didn't know it was racist she wouldn't have limited it to her inner circle or indoor private conversations only caught by subordinates. How can people say she didn't know? A better argument would be that it's so deeply a part of her psyche that she couldn't help it, and that she'll try to do better. Does she harbor actual racist thoughts today? Even subtly? Only she knows. But she's being assailed and she doesn't like that, so I would expect her to be emotional and upset.

It doesn't spur me to making excuses. But how many people see her and relate? Or see their own mother or grandmother? What does that mean? Food for extrapolation.

She should have lost her show, because when you skate the balance of public opinion and you run counter to the generally accepted values, you face consequences. This soured enough people that it put a stink on her that corporate bodies who bank on that public opinion saw as a risk. It would have happened to so many other people, and she wasn't different.

edit: shameful "bullshit" ya'll. keep minimizing, pretty soon it'll fit in the cellar or attic, whichever is more convenient.
 
This whole thing is so blown out of proportion. And her PR ppl need to be fired because she's just making everything worse.

It depends, all this media coverage is blowing the situation out of proportion tbh. However, her losing her show and most of her endorsements is well deserved because of the hostile, and discriminating environment she created toward black people. I really don't care about the word at all it's the constant discrimination and prejudice her workers felt that she should pay for.

Fuck, I just saw my sister "liking" some Paula Deen statements on facebook. How am I related to this person? We grew up in the same house, from the same culture, yet she turned into some hillbilly.
 
Just to let you guys know, it seems like the authorities at her restaurants are simply changing the hands of the restaurant. Hopefully noone loses their jobs. Except Paula and those of her company of course.

Has Sears said anything yet? Rich or not, she isn't going to be making that much money anymore. Nobody will stock her cookware or cookbooks. Do river captains make that much money?(I think that is what her husband does.)

I heard her cookbooks are selling like crazy now. She will still make plenty of money. And rightfully so, her recipes have this tendency of being amazing.

So I rebuttaled "Different time? Uh unless she was cryogenically frozen or hopped in a time machine and missed the last 40 years. She really has no excuse, and please don't give me the "many older people in the south have used that word before." because that argument starts to lose it's value once you start bringing in elderly people of other ethnic groups."

And then it became a painful argument about how bad black people can be some times and why can't they say the N word, and then devulged further and started talking about stereotypes, black people wanting free stuff, crime rates, etc.

So I just ended the entire thing with "And you don't see the irony in any of what you're posting while defending Paula?"

Really? I've heard a lot of people saying this lately and I just don't get it. She comes across as completely phony to me. Like Mom from Futurama. She's got such an exaggerated accent and mannerisms that seem nothing but insincere. She's like a cartoon. I've lived in a part of Florida that has lots people from Georgia, Alabama, and the rest of the south for 15+ years and spent a fair amount of time in Kentucky but I've never come across anyone who behaved like that unless they where playing it up for laughs.

I'm West Virginia.

When WV was first seceding from Virginia, the original state constitution said that there were to be no blacks, slave or free, within its borders. They couldn't keep that and be accepted as a Union state, so it was abandoned.

Harper's Ferry has a unique history in the Civil War, but I rarely saw any overt racism growing up in Morgantown. Never saw a Confederate flag in my life until college. Even amongst family members who were racist, it was probably a moot point. There weren't a whole lot of black people in the state, and anyone they did know were "the good kind." Just fear of the "other," I guess.

I think one of the worst things about this is Deen calling her great-grandfather's slaves "workers." That such amazing cognitive dissonance. Southerners need to stop pretending that their family were the nice masters. Nobody who owned another human being was ever nice.
 
I personally think all of this is being overblown. Truthfully. Had this discussion with my parents too. Two black people who grew up during the civil rights movement and they surprisingly agreed with me.

I'm from Savannah, and while I don't know all the details of this stuff going on (I've been working too much to pay attention to everything) but I've always thought this woman was an embarrassment to people from the south area, especially Savannah, and I'm happy she's being brought down. Everything she does is so overbearing and "put on". So, I've pretty much read various posts in this thread, but yeah...good riddance.

Agreed she doesn't feel real to me. She always felt phony whenever I watched her. It was like who acts like that in real life. Just very hokey and playing up the southern bit.

should have stopped at her losing endorsements, apologizing, bowing out, and disappearing for 5 or so years. What this is, is static and resistance, not really and overblown reaction. This is pushback.
 
No sympathy, glad that she is getting punished as she deserves. She has always come off as a hick to me, so no surprises either.

That racist themed wedding is one of the most ridiculous things I have ever heard of.
