Pausable Cut-scenes

bish gets all the credit :)
Why, oh why don't any games have them? The Metal Gear's would especially benefit from them.

I was glad Xenosaga had this option, cause some cutscenes were easily 30mins long. I hate it when cutscenes come up which are really exciting, and then somebody calls you on the phone, knocking at your door, or you didnt visit the bathroom for the past 6 hours and the 2 Liter water wants to have his way out.

I don't understand the point of skipping a cutscene in an RPG (when your seeing it for the first time). i have a friend who does it and it just doesn't make sense to me.

But pausing in Xenosaga was nice.

In which case i'd like a fast foward button please.

In Xenosaga episode 2, when you paused a cutscene you had the option of pressing Start to unpause or Triangle to skip the cutscene entirely. Very useful for when you needed to replay a boss battle because you died or whatever.

Game standards really are behind the times. In addition to pausing during cutscenes, you should be able to go forward and backward in dialogue scenes (as well as new cutscenes), or go through a transcript of the dialogue a la Fire Emblem for GC. These ideas aren't really new, so it's just lazy development. Grim Fandango had a dialogue transcript and that was from '98 or so.

24 has pausable cutscenes. Grandia III does not.

When it comes to cutscenes, all games should include:

1) Subtitles.
2) Ability to pause.
3) Ability to skip.

Game designers of the world, take note! GAF has spoken and you will obey!

I'm not sure but didn't ffx have some?

Yep. Although it'd of been real nice of them to include a "skip this summon I've seen 400 fricken' times" button. The "shorten summon" option is nice, but wasn't enough.

Yup Shadow Hearts: Convenant has the option to pause, skip, AND turn on/off subtitles for its cutscenes... And the game has quite a number of cutscenes too.

Dirge of Cerberus has them. When you pause in a cutscene, a little message comes up to tell you to press the Circle button or whatever, to skip. Very similar to Xenosaga Zwei, actually.

I thought that sped the game up just enough, actually. I rarely used summons, however.

The cut scenes in DQ8 require you to press X after each sentence. So that is sort of like a pause.

It's not just skip, fast forward, rewind and pause.

You should also be able to view any cutscene from the parts of the game you have already completed.

That would have helped with games like MGS2, because on first playthrough it got very confusing.

Same goes for Xenosaga, too.

What if I don't want to skip the entire cutscene? What if I just want to get to the good parts?

Seriously, why claw for just pausing cutscenes? Pause, Rewind, and Fast Forward should be standard on any scene over a minute in length.

Haven't played Grandia 3 yet, I see.

I really think cutscenes, like some people have said, should have a dvd style menu when you press start: fast forward, rewind, play, skip, etc.

If you don't want that crap in your way, you just unpause, and BAM! You've got your unedited cutscene. :D

Some games also let you replay any old cutscenes you've already seen from a menu screen (Blizzard's games come to mind). If the game doesn't have pause/rewind, I figure that's a reasonable compromise.

Every game with reasonably lengthy cutscenes NEEDS a theater mode. Why is it that most games still don't have this feature?

With limited money and time, I think most developers choose instead to focus on the game and the gameplay therein.

Seems like a fair point. I just wish more games had theater mode. :(

And that's why "Kingdom Hearts 2" will be the greatest game ever!

Im sorry, but it isn't more than a few lines of code to add a pasue function.

If the game has lengthy cutscenes in the first place, surely the the concentration isn't just on gameplay? Add code that lets you pause ATLEAST should be REQUIRED. Subtitles should be required as well.

Seriously, did everyone just happen to glance over the part where I said all games should have pauseable, skippable cutscenes? Here, I'll help you remember.
