PAX East 2013 Thread

Everything about that game is cringe city. They copied WoW minutiae down to the quick front-flip at the top of your jump like the Night Elves. Uuuuugh.

One thing that I forgot to mention is my friends and I discovered this awesome tabletop game that I recommend to everyone. After we checked it out and played two games, we immediately bought it. So much fun. We're not even into this type of thing normally.

I thought that game was pretty good. It reminded me of Dragon's Gold in a way.

Another indi game to check out is Gauntlet of Fools. I had more fun playing it. (less direct conflict so better for people who do not like that sort of thing)

Third Eye Crime looks fairly amazing. Noir/stealth puzzle game for tablets.

Look it up.

Yeah PAX East was super indie focused this year which is awesome. Fuck AAA titles that are going to be out in a few months anyway.

I don't feel like they're not worth looking at, but I'm there to learn about things that aren't constantly thrown in my face. The fact that I had to strain more than once to hear the response to a question at the Zeboyd and Yacht Club over the hooting and hollering coming from League of Legends was annoying.

Yacht Club was pretty for away from the LoL booth though. o_0

Haha, I ran into you outside of classic consoles. You had a good DK outfit. (But Dart gets all the glory, because it's friggen Legend of Dragoon)

lol thanks i think i had a good interpretation but yea dart was a hit with a lot of people lol we usually go to cons together and we get a good split of comments on our cosplays, but he did a good job and picked a good game

Man, I thought we had fully traversed the floor a couple times, but I definitely never came across Third Eye Crime. Dungeon Hearts was a very pleasant surprise that I almost missed, didn't seem like the little area between the escalators was too well-traveled. Breach & Clear seemed pretty neat as well.

Andrex was one of my first MH3U Streetpasses!

What's your character? If it was on Friday there's a good chance I registered you before I maxed it out. :D

The unfortunate thing is that the version of my Guild Card you got was likely without my Qurupeco armor or my "TRAILBLAZER of HONEY" tagline. I wonder if they update if you connect online...

Third Eye Crime was on the reverse side of the Indie Spotlight circle thing.

Trying to remember the indie game that looked like it was using a Super Nintendo controller. It looked like a turn based old school jRPG. They had a battle scene up with the label "Gates of Heck".

I think they do update if you re-tag someone. I started deleting cards with quest counts at 0 0 0 0 0 0 to make room for more. My character's name is Nero.

Just put up our hands-on preview!

- Third Eye Crime Hands-on

Also, we put up a spot on Lords of New York

High Strangeness is the game I think you're thinking of

Ah, I did register you! Moved you to the #2 spot on my list. It's a shame you probably don't have my updated guild card though.

I was disappointed that many indie devs had no interest in Wii U or 3DS. Paraphrasing a conversation I had with the MechKnight Chronicles Knightfall booth guy:

"It's coming out on everything! Xbox 360, Steam, iOS, TI-82 calculator..."
"How about Wii U?"
"...uh, maybe."

Playing indie games on Sunday might have been my highlight of PAX. A few I played included:

Mech Knight Chronicles Knightfall (4 player beat-em up, fairly fun)
Time Surfer (super fast Tiny Wings with a rewind mechanic, out now)
Major Magnet (neat physics game, out now)
El Chupacabra (horrendous art style, simplistic level design and mechanics)
Jungle Rumble (Very fun, similar to Rhythm Heaven, or as the dev said Rhythm Tengoku)
Super Splatters (Puzzle game where you direct blobs that fall apart)
Little Chomp (Pull back on a caterpillar to collect items, pretty fun)
High Strangeness (Game with a SNES controller mentioned above. Not a great game to jump into. Has a mechanic switching from a 16-bit to 8-bit art styles)
PWN: Combat Hacking (Fun little game where you press spots to take them over. I can imagine the game gets crazy when it changes to 3 dimensions)
Cult County (New FPS by Renegade Kid. It was just a tech demo with no actual gameplay; the 3D was very well done)

Not sure these count as "indie games":

Telekinesis Kyle (The Wizard part of Trine made into a whole game. Fun but not anything exciting)
Zombie Tycoon 2 (Fun but yeah, zombie fatigue)
Super Time Force (Jumping into this demo might not be a good idea if there are a lot of character deaths already. It made it a complete pain to see my character with so much moving on screen. I hope Cappy makes the one you're in control of stand out more)
Dropchord for Leap (The most interesting title by far as it's a game that's like playing a Theremin. You move your two fingers over a bar to control what's happening on screen. I think I heard the device costs $75)

There are a couple more games I can't think of their names. Oh and while I didn't played Drunken Robot Pornography, I did play it last year when it was just a tech demo.

Thanks for checking out Dungeon Hearts, I'm glad you enjoyed it! I didn't get nearly the traffic the Megabooth did, but I still did alright.

There seemed to be more hawt cosplayers this year than in the previous three.

The number does seem to be growing each year. PAX is becoming more and more notable nationally and especially on this coast, so a lot of the notable cosplayers are coming here. Also last year I believe it was, Anime Boston was the exact same days as PAX, so local cosplayers (and many locals in general) opted for Anime Boston in a lot of cases. Also being Easter Weekend it was a little limiting to those who cared about that.

EDIT: Did not even see you say 'hawt'...but the majority of my points stand! Also, Nigri was there last year (working for that cheerleader game I can't even remember the name of...Lolipop Chainsaw was it?) but was somewhere else this year at the same time.

Hope you guys made it out to a bunch of the panels too. The Dust: An Elysian Tale panel was awesome, and not so crowded that I was able to chat with Dean and Alex afterwards. The Harmonix Rock Band sendoff panel was also pretty amazing, although very crowded naturally.

Doesn't look like it. Checked yesterday and playtime was around 3 hours. I've given you the "GAF" tag on my Guild Card list.

Sunday cosplay pics are up:

PAX East 2013 - Sunday

Always feels good to finally be caught up on pictures! Didn't run into quite a few people I was hoping to see this year, plus the quality of the freebies seems to have dropped again. Wouldn't say that bothered me too much since I'm spending more time doing photo stuff nowadays, but overall I'd say my time at the con was good, not great.

Oh hey, you got the Aqua and Terra! I hadn't seen them at con but actually met them upon our return to DCA waiting for the bus to economy parking; the Aqua cosplayer had recognized the slide forever t-shirt I was wearing and asked if we had seen them in costume over the weekend. Glad I can actually say I've seen their costumes now!

Dude - nice job on all those PAX East pictures!

It's great to see good pictures of the people I saw, and even better to see all the ones I missed. Some great cosplay there.

Thanks for sharing!
