Just a heads up to the paypal users at large here.

It seems there is an email floatng around claiming to be from Paypal asking you to update your info becuase it's out of date.

DONT! This is a scam/spoof site. I've reported it after clicking on it....

Hope nothing goes wrong. If so my bank will fix it, they're really good about suspicious charges.

I always fill out the info with bogus stuff and try to start crap with them. I leave them a lesser liked friends number as well.

Yeah I get about 3-4 per week. It's a pain in the ass... you just gotta make sure to check every hyperlink's actual URL you click in emails, or you can easily get screwed. I dont understand how they spoof emails, but it's incredibly common now.

I always enjoy seeing the "Bank Card Nunber" & "PIN" field on these damn forms. Nice try there scammers. But unfortunately these emails / websites do look semi-legit so less savy people do fall for these scams.

I've done atleast 40 scam forms in the past year and I always type some some text code for the hackers to figure out :)

I guess the question I want to have ansered is what happens from this?

I mean the form looked REALLY legit...

Not if you look REALLY close. I've been getting these every day for a couple years. They don't actually refer to paypal.com. They'll have a link like <http://paypal.it.com>paypal.com</A> where you go and put in your info. Every company that deals in private information like this also says over and over that they'll never solicit your information in this manner. It should be a prerequisite to go on the internet that you agree never to submit data in a web form that comes to you via email, no matter how legit you think it looks.

I already got an email back from Paypal pertaining this subject. Damn they work quickly.

They affirmed my suspicions that it was a spoof/bogus and are investigating it. Hopfully these scammer bastards are shut down....

These are called "phishing" scams. Ebay has a new policy with their message center; if you get an email from Ebay about your account, you'll also get it in your online Messages. If it ain't there, then throw the email away.

I actually fell for one of these once, but I wised up quickly and asked my bank for a replacement card before any damage could be done.

Anybody who falls for these is an idiot. You deserve to get your money taken away if you actually fill out the form honestly.

Now, if you give bogus info, bonus points to you :)

Well thats a bit harsh.

The fomrs do look REALLY legit, using Paypal logos and even providing links to all the other Paypal services.

Short of the Pin box it looks authentic, I can understand how someone could be fooled.
Just to be safe I'm going to get a new card though.

I'm sorry, but :lol

Not exactly... it's close enough to fool 99% of the population. That much is for sure. Aside from the suspicious boxes (pin) the only giveaway is the http code. It doesn't bounce off a secure Paypal server, yet has Paypal.com in it's address.

I didn't send any information via email. It linked me to what looked like paypals actual fucking website. I didn't think at the time that it was any kind of far fetched thing. I can't remember if I updated it or not though.

the most common outbound mail protocol used by the internet is incredibly insecure.

you can say an email is from any address and the only way to do verify authenticity is the IP address of the email being sent, but it's also incredibly easy to get around that as well.

Outcast --- This is called phishing. It is so old hat now that even the 11pm news casts have all done investigative reports on it. Outlook's junk mail filter (and those of gmail, yahoo, msn, etc...) filter out phishing scam emails. Thanks for the warning, but just realize that this has been going on for years and years and most people here (and a lot more than 1% of the population) now know about it.

THANK YOU! This is EXACTLY what I've been telling you people!

EVERYTHING FROM THE EMAIL YOU RECEIVE TO THE LINK TO "UPDATE" YOUR INFO LOOKS EXACTLY LIKE THEIR SITE!

Do you need the damned link?

This has been going on for years... are you new to all of this? I even receive them from places I don't even do business with. Just delete it and continue on your way.

They're not debating whether or not it's new, just indicating that it looks realistic. And yes, 99% of the population would be and is fooled by these types of things. Enough piling on the guy about how stupid he is or how easy is to delete it -- as seen by Maverick's response, he's likely not the only one here who has fallen for it and this will likely help out someone in the future.

This is really old news guys, this has been going on for like 3 years now.

Paypal emails have

Dear John Smith, <--- using your name

Fake paypal emails and fake Ebay emails

Use

Dear Paypal Member, = Dear Ebay Member

Do what I do just ignore all the emails!

I have tranferred thousands over the years through paypal and never fell for something is wacky as that, the first time I got an email like that it just looked to fishy.

P.S. Don't send your money to Nigeria

yes, this is the first that has come through to me. It's new to me. I've been doing stuf through Paypal since 2001 so I'm surprised this hasn't gotten to me sooner.

I'll just have to be wary of any mysterious Paypal transactions. I keep a tight reign on my finances so I'm not all that worried. First time I see something fishy my debit card is getting changed.

The first thing I always do is close the browser, open a new one, go to paypal.com and check to see if I need to do anything.
