PC Engine/TG Appreciation and Collecting Thread, Because who needs a 2nd controller?

I've been very happy with my Duo but people say that they generally need more maintenance than R and RX models, so keep that in mind. (capacitors replaced, CD unit might need a looking at, etc.)

If you want the black Turbo Duo (not the R or RX) micktris on the pcenginefx forums has them recapped, RGB modded and region modded at the cheapest price I've seen. He even tracked down a Turbo Duo-R for me on request. Also for a very low price, and I didn't have to deal with Doujindance repairs!

Looking into this now

I didn't want to mention anything about using a Turbo Everdrive but YES yes lol

So here's a terrifying question that I kind of don't want the answer to.

If I've get a Laseractive PAC N1, the Japanese PC Engine PAC, do I have any prayer of being able to run any sort of Everdrive on it? It looks like the slot is fully encompassing of the Hucard, and anything that is slightly thicker won't fit.

Does anyone have any experience with that thing?

YMMV on the everdrives. For mine the thickness of it and a regular hucard are fairly close. I would think it would work, but I've never seen a laseractive unit in person.

Look at it this way if you don't have a TED buy one and see if it fits (obviously inserting it slowly) if it doesn't you could probably sell it for what you paid for it, and if it does fit you're set. From what I understand too from 2.0 on the PCB of the TED is much closer to a regular hucard (2.4 here).

Do the street fighter II' populous, Tennokoe cards fit into the laseractive pac unit?

If so then you should have no problem but it looks like you might have to have a coverless everdrive. Just a theory tho.

It would be insane if the most stupid expensive version of the system couldn't play Street Fighter 2, one of the biggest releases on the damn console.

I'll be trying one out, so I'll pop that in and see, unless someone has a bare everdrive I can maybe borrow...

So the Tennokoe Bank & Populous have save batteries, the system cards have fat RAM chips, why does Street Fighter 2' have the thick case? Does it have extra RAM onboard?

I've been wondering why it wasn't just a CD game since it was released very late.

SFII' is the biggest card release around that time. 20megabits or 2.5megabytes ?

Also that populous is very strange as that is the 3rd copy that I've owned. Many moons ago the 2nd one I opened it and found nothing there. Just a long piece of circuit board with just 2 chips glued on. Unless a later revision removed it or added it in....

Finally got my original console RGB modded (in the UK), can't wait to set it up later.

mmmmm looks nice and fresh! Later versions of that controller added autofire.

Populous doesn't have a save battery, that is a very old rumor that was proven inaccurate years ago. It has extra memory, too much for a regular thin HuCard, hence the bump-up -- much like SFII. Only the Tennokoe Bank has a battery.

It's the only revision without auto fire.

What's hilarious is the PCB and case mold have the spots for auto fire. They deliberately gimped the original controller to sell extra controllers lol.

How could you forget about it?

That thing was SO ahead of its time. Literally the full console in your pocket (well, a large cargo type pocket or backpack anyway.) I had the TG-16 but I couldn't afford one of those at the time. I remember being very fascinated by the CD addon (that YS CD demo looked so epic at the time), but never got that either. I did get that expansion module that gave you the savegame memory. That was a crucial addon. That made games like Neutopia (their best Zelda clone from what I can remember) bearable to play.

So pieces of my PC Duo R came yesterday. Kinda confused about the whole thing

I ordered it from ebay from turbozonedirect1 the leading turbo/pc engine specialist.

A small box came to me inside was 2 Hu cards, a controller, and a AC adapter. I'm like wtf is this?

I'm missing my console and some video cables. wrote the people and within minutes of sending it they told me that my stuff was on the way and they would be in contact with me every step of the way.

I thank them for that. I was just worried I got shafted out of a lot of money........

two games I got were

Which I already got on my Wii virtual console for TG

I have a DUO R on the way as well. I have my standard PCE, disply modded and region switch installed.

Recently picked up emerald dragon, valis 3 aND cosmic fantasy 2 waiting on it.

I was looking at Exile too at a local retro shop. But they have two versions with radically different prices. One cover has a skull and some shit and one is the logo on a tan background.

Are there any differences other than the cover?

Is there a PCE console revision that plays (with modding) _all_ the games from different regions - US and japanese hu-cards and CD games?

CD games aren't region locked, so US and Japanese games will work on any CD system. You can get any PCE or TG16 region modded with a switch to play HuCard games from both regions. DBElectronics is also working on a new adapter so that you don't have to mod your systems.

Thanks. I'm happy with my Duo + Everdrive combo, but a friend of mine is an avid collector and wants to buy games from both regions and play them on one console so I've been asking around what would be the best combo for him.

The one with the weird skull is actually the US edition of the sequel and is insanely expensive. Additionally, Working Designs messed up the conversion, and due to an additional variable, enemies are powered up beyond reason. I hear its impossible to beat, but you can always burn a fixed version. Not worth collecting IMHO, unless you must have all working designs games.

What was the price for each, if you happen to remember?

My PC engine Duo R finally came

HUR RAH!! Was getting kinda worried

Okay it was RGB SCART modded. COOL

I don't have any fittings for my TV that can use this thing. NOT COOL

Anybody have any recommendations?

Are other consoles cables compatible with this thing?

I'm just about order some AV cables till I get a tv in the distant future that can use this thing

But neo geo cd, master system and model 1 Genesis av are compatible

That's going to be... not so good.

You really need a quality scaler for 240p RGB consoles to not look like trash, that means Framemesiter or OSSC.

This actually works really well for the PC Engine, neo geo cd and Saturn I run through it, you just have to play with the options. It handles scart scaling fantastically for the price.

If that works as well as the Framemeister, that would be an excellent / cheaper alternative.

I don't think it creates scanlines tho..

At a later date I'm going to look into purchasing an OSSC device although I think in that life in gaming vid where they try it out they mention some people had some compatibility issues running a pc engine through it.

If that works as well as the Framemeister, that would be an excellent / cheaper alternative.

That doesn't do what the framemeister does. That's just converting a signal to Component. The framemeister is upscalling, and it also de-interlaces for 480i signals.

It also says it only outputs 480i and 480p theoretically it should still be able to do 240p but I have a feeling it's going to treat 240p like it's interlaced.

I know this is an old post, but I just saw an answer for you. On the one facebook group I'm on someone just posted a Laser Active a couple of days ago with an everdrive in it.

Anyone have the XE-1 HE PRO controller stick? I've been wanting one for various shmups and stuff, but they are pretty damn expensive and I haven't been able to spot one in good condition in a while. Basically I'd like to know if it's worth the money.

That is a transcoder, so should be fine, but isn't a scaler. The only way it does 'HD' is by outputting in an SD format more HDTVs can take.

Seriously guys, go to the scaler thread for better scaler talk. Almost everyone has tried cheaper alternatives on their way, but ended up going XRGB or OSSC eventually because nothing else is even remotely acceptable for anyone who cares about image quality. If you're happy with your TV doing the scaling or a $50 scart to HDMI box that treats the signal as 480i and smears all movement, or your TV's scaler which most likely does the same, that's perfectly fine. But their existence is not new information for those promoting Framemeister/OSSC as the only decent options.

I'm going to Hong Kong in a few weeks so after I'm back I'm going to try and grab an OSSC hopefully when the next batch is out.

Also if anyone wants to give their pc engine sound chip a work out.

This is from the Tempest 2000 game and the track is Mind's Eye. It's been created using Deflemask by someone by the online name Fragmare.

Yes it's recorded from actual pc engine hooked up to elgato capture device.

I'm kinda blown away by it..

I don't know what the second line of text says, but the first line says "Arcade Card." Are you currently using something other than an Arcade Card to try to play the game?

Just checking to see if anyone here has any experience with an eBay seller called 8bitterz with RGB modded Duo R units? After seeing the "work" that doujindance performs on them I thought I'd check first, I've got my eye on a few potential units.

I have a turbo ever drive In the slot.

I'm not currently home at the moment

I'm not sure if there is an arcade hu loaded on the thing or if they ever made one for the everdrive turbo.
