PC game recommendations?

I'm looking for some single player PC games, old(not so old that it can't run on win xp) or new ones that are NOT FPS or MMORPG

Simulation, tycoon style games, strategy, 4X, JA/X-com style games etc. are very welcome.. I'm especially looking for some squad based games JA/X-Com (if they still make those, that is..)

It's amazing how these types of games have gone so low over the years. I really miss it. Looking forward to FM2006 and Civ IV...

If you haven't played it already, Fallout Tactics(JA) and Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri(4x). And Civ 4 will be out soon. ARE YOU READY???

Commandos 2! If you dont like hard games you may want to pass though...cause this game has no room for error and will leave you crying. Disciples 2 +expansions are also ace, you can download a demo from strategy firsts website and check it out. Turn based strat rpg, real tough if you turn up the difficulty but some of the most beautiful artwork i have ever seen in a game.

Rome: Total War

I second this. The Total War series kicks ass. It is a great mix of turn based strategy (territory management) and real time strategy (battles only and they're actually strategic).

wow. no mention of the 40K games.

Dawn of War and Winter Assault expansion for the win. The best game and expansion for the PC to be released in a while.

Already played those. I love SMAC. One of my favorite games ever. Also played Galactic Civilizations (great 4x, waiting for the sequel).
Civ IV I'm definately expecting , but I haven't played Civ III much.

Silent Storm and Rome: Total War seems to be what I'll look into now..

Get Civilization IV next week. Rome:Total War is also good. The Movies releases in early November and is getting good word so far.

The Total War series is a great recommendation.

Have you ever played around with the city builders? Zeus: Master Of Olympus and the accompanying expansion Poseidon is the best of the bunch but Pharoah (w/Cleopatra expansion) and Emperor: Rise of the Middle Kingdom are also very very good.

I bet you could get these for dirt cheap and they'll keep you busy forever. One of my favorite series of all time. :)

Rise of Nations is a good strategy game, and Age of Empires III comes out this week although I'm not sure what the consensus is on that one.

Beware, thorns, Silent Storm needs a monster PC to run - it has mandatory AA always turned on, bumpmapping and pixel-shaders stuff. Best implementation of Havok physics and destructible environments I've ever seen (bow down, Half-Life 2 and Red Faction) and of course it's the best "X-Com/ JA" type of game EVER MADE. A perfect mix of old-school turnbased UFO: Enemy Unknown goodness with Nazis (and their equipment!!! - helmets, ammo clips, nades, rifles) ragdolling down the hill.

Now if you want RTS goodness pick Warcraft 3 or Rome: Total War. W3 for old-school RTS feel mixed with some lite RPG stuff, Rome for 20 000+ units on one screen.

Warhammer: Dark Omen is a pretty nice real-time, thinking man's strategy as well.

Fallout: Tactics gets a nod, but you played it already...

The Heroes of Might and Magic series is one of the best TB strategy series out there. Avoid the 4th part and stick to H2 and H3. Top-of-the-line art, music and gameplay, this will suck you in for months to come.

I have to check this out, part of the charm of jagged alliance was all the wacky characters, voice overs and all. I don't know if I'll enjoy something that seems strictly realistic..

is this the really old warhammer game? I think I've played this one , actually..

Already played those. They're classic.. Anyone remember Master of Magic? I used to really love that game. Thinking of trying out either Age of Wonders II or Disciples II... Any more games in this genre(i.e. turn-based fantasy strategy, not too hardcore..)

So many gems within PC gaming that I seem to have missed.
These days I'm playing Darwinina, anyone check that out? A very unique little game. You can get the demo from : http://www.darwinia.co.uk/

I've never heard of this, but hot damn.

He's right about the gameplay parts of SS, but the monster machine bit isn't quite true, its fairly scalable.
