PC gamers claim Windows 11's Gaming Copilot is capturing gameplay for AI training by default – but what it's actually doing is spoiling performance

  • A claim has been made that Windows 11's Gaming Copilot AI might be capturing gameplay and sending it back to Microsoft
  • Gaming Copilot is a beta AI feature in the Game Bar
  • There's confusion about whether this privacy concern is valid or not, but it's clear that Gaming Copilot can impact your frame rates (slightly) in games

While Microsoft is continuously making efforts to improve gaming on Windows 11, most recently with a new 'full-screen experience' mode for handhelds, and also an AI gaming assistant, the latter is currently mired in some controversy.

As Wccftech spotted, according to a poster on the ResetEra forum, Windows 11's Gaming Copilot may be actively monitoring and capturing gameplay and sending this back to Microsoft for 'model training' (of the AI) by default. The poster shares a screenshot of the 'model training on text' option being enabled by default, raising concerns over privacy therein.

However, there seems to be some disagreement as to whether this is a valid accusation being levelled at Microsoft, or not - so much so that the admins have locked the thread on the forum.

For now, then, we have to take this assertion with a good deal of caution - and presume that any training data is only being sent back to Microsoft if you're actually using Gaming Copilot (with the relevant options enabled). Or that this is some kind of an error perhaps (remember, Gaming Copilot is still in beta).

As pointed out by another denizen of ResetEra, Microsoft's FAQ for Gaming Copilot clearly states that 'screenshots are not stored or used for model training' and that grabs are only taken when you're actually using Copilot in Windows 11's Game Bar.

All this has raised privacy fears for some gamers, as noted, and hopefully Microsoft will be able to cut through the confusion and clear this up. I've contacted the company to this end, and will update this story if I hear anything back.

Privacy controversy aside, what's clear enough about Gaming Copilot is the impact it has on performance. I tested the Dead As Disco demo on Steam and noticed that Gaming Copilot is reducing frame rates, although the AI feature doesn't have a major impact

With Gaming Copilot's model training settings turned on in the game's 'Infinite Disco' mode, the frame rate often dipped into the 70s, although it mostly stayed within the 80 to 85 fps range.

With Gaming Copilot's model training settings switched off, the game kept within an 84 to 89 fps range, while reaching 90 fps or more occasionally, without any dips into the high 70s range.

Microsoft's Edge browser is also required to view and export the data that is captured (via 'Game Assist'), and having that in the background isn't going to help gaming frame rates.

Now, while this doesn't sound like a significant frame rate loss, when you stack this up with the rest of Windows 11's bloatware that's limiting performance levels (even with the new handheld mode), it all adds up. Speaking of handhelds, Gaming Copilot will likely have a worse impact on lower-end systems like these gaming portables, where every frame counts due to weaker hardware specs.

I got the icon in the corner for an update. 25H2 was available. But I didn't hit the install button, now today the option went away. What happened did I miss the chance or something?
Or did it secretly install on it's own?

Reminder that archinstall is now easier than installing Windows 11
Hows HDR gaming on Linux? Nvidia GPU support? VRR working well? Its been a few years sense I tried, but it was a horrible experience just a few years ago, full of missing features. I keep hoping it will get better, would be wonderful to finally ditch windows.

It isn't really there yet, which is one reason why I stuck with W10 for the time being.

Wayland has good HDR support. You have to use Wayland. Wayland is now default in KDE Plasma.

Some users will always find reasons not to switch. It's like asking if a car can finally float over water like a boat. If you're so desperate to hold onto the latest gimmicks and tech fads, you need to use Microsofts trojan horse OS. But don't act like it's super hard to just install an AMD GPU. VRR was working years ago already.

I try to rip as much as I can out of my Windows install as I can without breaking the stuff I want.

I would jump on Linux as soon as it is ready.

still on windows 10 but can't you just debloat using chris titus's or similar debloat scripts to take care of copilot/recall/etc?

most of this stuff is a handful of registry edits to get rid of.

I turned off most the AI stuff ages ago, and even after the update those changes still keep my windows install from using any of this new stuff.

like I don't have the copilot button that the new version is supposed to have no, even tho I updated yesterday. probably because I have almost all telemetry off and online search also off.

some windows updates will change the reg edits back though. mostly the main version updates.

Not about latest features, all those features are going on a decade old now, and Nvidia is by far the market leader. Its about being a GOOD option, not just A option. Luckily it feels like Steam OS is brining a lot of much needed attention to these features, so I hope we'll start seeing things become better which will lead to greater adoption, more money flowing in to get more in parity.

I removed the Game Bar and any related stuff related to Xbox on my Win 11 a long time ago
You removed it? Best I've done was turn it off.
That way the Xbox button on the controller can bring up Steam Big Picture mode. :)
I removed Riva Tuner Statistics and Afterburner I like the new Steam Stats better.
But I have to use Gamebar to show FPS in PC Gamepass. :(

Come on Steam, It's about time we started getting hardware news. Steam OS and Linux are going nowhere if I can't use my Nvidia RTX 4070.
Until then, Yay Windows 11, sure you got lots of mystery processes in the Task Manager, but at least you work.

Even if this feature doesn't yet siphon your data to either train AI or be sold in some way to other companies...it will in some way over time.

My only worry is if any update will somehow re-implement a feature I de-bloated, because they've reset registry changes before.

You can use your Nvidia GPU now, just in DX12 games you're gonna get a 5-20% hit in performance.

I'm on 25H2 and checked this out. I didn't completely disabled Game Bar before but minimized it's use to a minimum (just enough to activate AutoHDR).

There is no copilot beta or something on my Game Bar at all.

Addendum: Oh by the way I already disabled Copilot from startup menu long before. Maybe that's why I don't see anything at all.

Cringe Wince GIF

Every day the choice of not downgrading to 11 seems to pay dividends, gonna stick to W10 for another 3 years.

Totally unrelated, how is SteamOS for desktop nowadays?

I'm watching Youtube tutorial for Bazzite with baked in Nvidia drivers. It was posted 2 months ago. Maybe things have improved.
I tried on my PC a long while back and games had all kinds of graphical glitches. So much awful that I gave up and reinstalled Win11.

I was under the impression this thing would be limited to Copilot+ PCs, but apparently it's coming to every Windows 11 PC?

Uh, I guess Fedora KDE will end up also being my desktop OS (rather than just for a laptop that was running Win10 until now) sooner than later.
