PC Magazine recommends DS

Tech guru John C. Dvorak recommends the DS in his article:
If you know a child or someone who acts like a child, don't think twice about getting the dual-screen, touch-sensetive Nintendo DS. Wow! What a great product - especially when it's combined with Nintendogs, perhaps the most compelling new game since The Sims. Kids simply love this game, which similuates actual dog ownership. Hint: You have to "pet" the dog - a lot! Think of it as Tamagotchi meets The Sims meets meets Furby meets Wacom, in the guise of a dog. It's a stunning product. The DS sells for around $130, and Nintendogs costs around $27. You can rely on most of the games for the DS being out of the ordinary. Highly recommended.

that may be the worst recommendation of all time. After reading that there is no way I would buy a DS. Kudos for the props (hell knows it deserves it) but that basically reads "if you are between the ages of 12 and 25 you will be laughed at for buying a DS" Could they have physically placed the word "kid" in the writeup any more times? I doubt it.

:lol

I was thinking the same thing. The way it starts, it sounds like a backhanded recommendation.

This is because if you are between the ages of 12 and 25 you will be laughed at for buying a DS.

Hint: That's just how Dvorak (and most actual adult, professional writers) writes. He's sincere in his enthusiasm for the DS, though his knowledge of gaming and the gaming industry is very skewed.

That actually sounds like what a respected, PC writer would say about most game consoles... especially ones that don't have a flagship "FLAY YOUR ENEMIES" game.

This screams buy it for the kids or dork in your life. Which I think is good for Nintendo. Maybe not for some of their fans...It's still good for N.

Funny thing was, i saw the title and knew it had to be some nutjob Dvorak piece.

:lol

He is a funny guy. Listening to him on TWiT makes me laugh when ever he goes off on something. The funniest part had to be when Kevin Rose was teaching him how to use a iPod.

Good times.

While what he says is nice, the problem is that Dvorak has never been right before ever. Maybe he was, but then I wouldn't know of it. :)

I can't read about Dvorak without thinking about the infamous keyboard -- anyone know if he's related to the guy that developed that thing?

I'm almost positive he is. At least, that's what remember reading somewhere.

I don't read Dvorak's stuff, but I used to watch him sometimes on ZDTV, and nearly everything he said was backhanded.

This episode conclusively proves there's always a first time for everything ;)

Everything that's been said about Dvorak so far is pretty much right on. He's very knowledgeable, but almost always wrong and adds little to constructive dialogs, especially on TwiT. There was mention of DS and Nintendogs on an episode not too long ago, at least after the entire group went about jerking off over the PSP, though they all seemed to use it for movie watching or simple hackery.

frankly, john c dvoraks audience really isnt people under 25, so i doubt a great deal of them took his comments for anything more than a recomendation of a good product.

He was pretty clear about what he said. I suppose is you dont regularly read dvorak you might take it as a backhanded compliment, but if you read PC Mag, then you read dvorak.

edit: is should add that I havent read dvorak or pc mag in years, but i do seem to recall that he did often offer up his opinion on topics he didnt really know much about. Canadians might have seen Steve Dotto and Dave Chalk do the same thing. Chalk is the worst, as if I am going to listen to his advice about home theaters, he didnt have a clue! but there he was offering is expert opinion on tv. these computer nerds, i swear they think they know everything.

The recommendation actually sounds sarcastic. "Wow, what a great product!" ?? Uh, okay.
Glad I'm not the only one who read it that way. I actually visualized a cheerleader asking out a "mathlete" to give her friends a good laugh.

Exactly what I was thinking...

To be fair, they reccomended Nintendogs with it which is pretty much only for the losers in your life.

If you have an adult/non-loser friend, you'd buy Castlevania DS or Advance Wars DS for them.

Dvorak was comparing Nintendogs to The Sims... Which means a lot of women play it.
