The facts:

It's vaporware. Until recently it was assumed a hoax.
It features Deborah Gibson and Lou Reed.
Desert Bus - aka the 8 hour game made to spite Janet Reno is in it.
The torrent is in the link.

Debbie Harry. Big difference.

I love the idea that the game is in some parts designed to be shit-- not only does it include pranks to play on your friends (secret button combinations and such to cheat in multiplayer), but the whole game is a prank on anyone who would have bought it.

I haven't played it yet, but some of the stuff described is BRILLIANTLY HILARIOUS (I want to say 'postmodern', but that's kind of an icky word). Like how you get an unskippable 2-minute-long FMV of Penn and Teller eating pizza when you pause, and how the score counter in Desert Bus has 5 digits, but each 8-hour bus trip earns you one point.

Oh, and there's a powerup that replaces P&T with stunt doubles.

Yeah, I read about this on a Sega Google News search last week...sounds like a laugh riot. I'll probably grab the torrent over the weekend and try it out.

wonder if it works on xbox...

God damn. I forgot all about that SegaCD support before. Savestates don't work in Gens, apparently, but maybe they will in the Xbox emulator. I'll check it out.

Try out the Kega Fusion emulator (3.51 is the latest version)...save state might work in that one.

I'm no lawyer, but it is an unreleased game that was not published by a company that no longer exists. To me, that makes the copyright status 'awesome.'

edit: not that I downloaded this software, or that I condone the downloading of this software.

I was wondering whether the Penn & Teller fellows would officially allow it to be distributed, then...

My friend *ahem* acquired this game over the weekend. It's pretty fucking bad. Mofo the psychic monkey.

I would assume that since they sold/gave the rights to the game, it probably doesn't matter what they officially allow. Then again, IANAL.

Penn acknowledged the existence of the 'bootleg' on his podcast, and seemed positive about it. I checked Teller's podcast, and he didn't say anything about it.

edit again!: of course, that doesn't make it legal. That doesn't mean much of anything.

Being as how they talked openly about the game and mentioned the internet release on their podcast, I'm pretty damn sure that it's kosher.

:lol

Until somebody can provide proof to me that this is an authorised release I'm going to lock this thread, abandonware may have some moral justification but unfortunately it's still illegal to distribute copyrighted works without authorisation, and as such cannot be condoned or encouraged by GAF.
