Who was so perfectly cast in a film or television role that you can't see anyone ever coming close?

My pick is Ian McKellen as Gandalf in the LoTR trilogy. He fits the role so good it's insane!

Mads Mikkelson as Hannibal Lecter in the show Hannibal

Cas Anver as Alex Kamal in The Expanse

Wes Chatham as Amos Burton in The Expanse

David Duchovny as Fox Mulder in The X-Files

Gillian Anderson as Dana Scully in The X-Files

Tom Selleck as Indiana Jones, oh wait ..
Eric Stoltz in Back to the future.. no that's not right either.

Goddamit.

I don't think anyone will accept a replacement for Mark Hamil as Luke Skywalker or the Joker animated voice.

Jesse Plemons in USS Callister. He had me sweating with how he embodied an evil nerd. The episode had me sitting on nails, much thanks to his performance.

I have no idea how he does his pyscho roles so well, like in Breaking Bad. You even couldn't help liking Todd at times because of how sympathetic he looks.

24yo Laura Dern was weird though.
She was so seriously hot omg

All the cast of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone is ridiculously perfect. Every single main character.

Schwarzenegger as the Terminator.
Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones.
Christopher Lloyd as Doc Brown, completely nails the quirky scientist/inventor character.
Sean Connery as James Bond.
Lee Van Cleef as Sentenza.

Pat morita as sensei miyagi

Cary-hiroyuki tagawa as shan tsung

Bolo yong as chong li in blood sport or the villain in double team

The entire cast of jaws

The entire cast of goonies

Macaulay Culkin as Kevin McCallister in Home Alone.
The whole cast was perfect in that movie, the family was hatable but relatable, the villains were great.

Even the small roles like the pizza guy, the chick at the supermarket or old dude that help kevin, the young cousin that piss the bed, the annoying old uncle etc. were all good.

Disagree about Tobey. Not nerdy enough as everyday Peter, not sassy enough as Spidey. He was always the oddball in an otherwise spot-on cast.

JK Simmons as JJJ, though… one of the top castings ever. Absolute perfection.
Yeah i always heard people shitting on his peter even if we all love the movies overall.

But tbf, people say that garfield is the most accurate peter and his peter gave me herpes and pubic lices at the same time while i was dying from second hand cringe everytime dude opened his mouth, so...

A lot of good ones already listed.

Robert Downey Jr as Tony Stark
Jim Carrey as The Grinch/The Mask
Al Pacino as Tony Montana
Marlon Brando as Vito Corleone
Patrick Stewart as Professor X
Hugh Jackman as Logan
Raul Juila as Gomez Addams
Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow
Kathy Bates as Annie Wilkes in Misery

Not interested in seeing others play these roles.

It's difficult once we so strongly associate an actor with a role and then someone in the future has to overcome that existing association.

If we're talking about if someone else had hypothetically taken that role instead of them (removing the association from the equation), I suspect there's always at least one other actor who could have given a portrayal of the role which we would have ended up just as attached to.

Peter Dinklage as Tyrion Lannister in Game of Thrones.

Arguably best character in series.
Just imagine a world where we got Gary Oldman on his knees instead of Dinklage :P

yes, that's Oldman on his knees and yes, that's Kate Beckensdale.

The film is called Tiptoes, and Dinklage was in it as well.

and yes, thats Patricia Arquette. Mathew McCaughey is the lead. Truly bizarre film, really.

Already been mentioned individually.... but the Arnie holy trifecta of Terminator, Predator, Conan. (Despite me having an Aliens avatar haha)

That dude was my childhood.

Also Im actually not a huge Marvel guy, but cant deny RDJ as Tony Stark is pretty iconic.
