4th arc is not what I expected.
Futaba
is a cutie-pie.

if there is one thing that is keeping the game for being my GOTY so far this year right now (it might still end up being mind you) is I think that every time the "story takes over", aka you lose all control over what to do and just spend day after day watching cutscenes, it really hurts the pace. It happened big time in May and just happened again in July.

People say its a balance thing or whatever but it just annoys me and I wish you could do something... anything during those days too.

It'll never change so... the game is out of the running for your GOTY. But IMO I never minded it. I mean, you can still max every stat and finish every Confidant in one playthrough. It's not like the game is actively stealing time from you. It just feels like it. But I get it. It really does feel like that at times.

I'm fairly certain (100%) that in the future I'll be like, one out of 20 people beating this game's drum lol. Persona 5 is the Dark Souls III of Persona haha.

It only bugged me around May personally. The game finally opens up then fairly quickly shackles you in for awhile again. I'm in October now and genuinely love when it happens now, after two segments of ~20 days to do whatever it feels paced out a lot more.

Saying P5 doesn't have a story is as ridiculous as opening a book and saying it doesn't have a story. P5 is like 75% text

so text = 'story'? ever read a school textbook? or a dictionary? :) ...

when i say 'story', i'm talking 'plot'. so, what exactly is p5's plot? well, there's some weird stuff going on, people doing strange things, & then blacking out & not remembering later. & then there's these bad adults that need their hearts stolen, so let's become heart thieves! & then there's... what?...

this isn't what i'd call a plot, so much as a premise. i mean, yeah, having completed the 3rd palace, i've now found out that
this other, mysterious heart thief is going around likely causing all the chaos that's happening because, unlike us, whoever it is isn't an upstanding fighter for goodness/justice
, but, me, i'm still personally waiting for someone to explain why i'm supposed to care :) ...

so, no, i don't feel that, as there was in both p3 & p4, there's an actual plot in this game. let's put it this way: while each episode of, say, seinfeld, had a plot, did the series itself have a plot? no, not really. it had a premise. & that's what i feel's going on with p5: i feel like i'm getting these little palace-based stories, set within a premise. but all in the context of no actual, over-arching plot...

44 hours in I'm burnt out. Idk what it is I went into the game with the highest of highs for that good 44 hours than I die one time lose 1 hour worth of progress in the 5th palace and now I'm just dead inside lol. It's hard to explain feels bad :(

Note that I didn't really enjoy any other SMT games

If you didn't enjoy any of the other SMT games, then no. That said, you should consider trying SMT: Apocalypse

Despite the appearance, it's very much a Persona game (minus the social links).

Wouldn't the plot be the rise of the Phantom Thieves or how the leader got captured?

I think Kanji and Naoto being such major focuses makes it worse than the two NPCs. Like, P5 is a 100 hour game and these two NPCs show up for all of two minutes of total screentime. P4 spends half the game dancing around whether Kanji is gay, complete with Yosuke implying Kanji's going to rape him and constantly talking shit. I think that's way more egregious than some thirty-second gag bit that falls on its face.

I could write a whole essay about how I think P4 is super hypocritical about its main theme, but a lot of it could be summed up with "it's a game about facing the real world and harsh realities that's also an escapist harem simulator where you can pretend to live in an ideal Japanese high school and be the most popular dude in the world where everyone wants to suck your dick."

You totaly missed the point of Kanji arc, you also missed the point how the group worked together to accept everyone. Here in Persona 5, group forced Futaba into a rehab, tell Yusuke is a weirdo and Ryugi a perma idiot (yes, he has his flaw, I dislike him, wanted to strangle him but I never discriminated him). So excuse me but I way prefer P4 group that saw the ungliness of each party member yet still wanted be friend and hangout together.

The number of time you hangout as group in Persona 5 is laughable. So no, don't come bash P4 when in P5 we play
social justices warriors who didn't took seriously any of this shit until real big guy come and slap you in the face.
I finished 7th palace, so yeah I know the game by now more that I would've liked to.

Just got Ann to rank 10

spoilers on that:

did romance, will probably choose romance with everybody. i am pretty disappointed in ann's confident arc, it went nowhere really and she just blurted out 'i love you' in rank 9 when she'd barely been paying attention to the MC before then. felt like it went from 0 to 100 and ann i guess wants to be a model or something. bummer!

is there any post rank 10 content for confidants or is that it, just move on to other ones?

P3 & P4 are kinda structured pretty similarly though. There's the main threat which lies in the background for most of the game simmering until you get like 2/3 of the way through then it just explodes and things get revealed and bring it to the forefront, which I'd imagine will happen with P5's narrative. A lot of P3 and P4 is spent with your buddies and going through dungeons getting character development until the main plot actually appears.

In 50hours in (finished te 4th dungeon), and even I can see that P5 has huge parallels to the story structure to that of P3.

I'm surprised I haven't touched the main overarching stuff just yet (the teases about the man (group?) in the black mask is keeping me going.) That and I got spoiled a bit about 1 character, so I'm interested how that plays out.

But I agree. Not much story-wise happens in p3 until you beat all the full-moon bosses

The game is oozing with plot. The framing device sets you up with a twist to be uncovered. The Phantom Thieves are out to steal hearts in a social commentary on people who abuse positions of power in society with a hefty flavor of youthful rebellion. The main cast comes to terms with their positions as relative outcasts and better accept themselves as who they are, and each member has their own personal journey of self discovery. Even beyond the chapter-to-chapter story, which adheres to very strong themes and motifs, there is the overarching story of the government's involvement and society's reaction the Thieves.

To say this game has a story you don't like is fine. To say it doesn't have one is factually wrong.

Hard disagree on mainline SMT having better dungeon design than P5. If we were talking EO then absolutely, but SMT's dungeon design has always been standard.

Nocturne had really great dungeons. But I believe Nocturne was made by P Studio too. SMTIV was disappointing in that regard.

Toward the end of the
Spaceport
, it does begin to feel like a slog at times. The best thing to do is to use the safe rooms and warp out more than earlier palaces. Take a day or two off. The marathon sessions become really frustrating if you're roaming around with low SP against enemies who are immune to anything physical. Go in prepared. Smoke enemies. Safe roam. Break. Rinse. Repeat.

I finished 7th palace, so yeah I know the game by now more that I would've liked to.

They don't "force" Futaba into anything. They offer to help her and she consents to it. I don't feel that they're cruel to Yusuke at all either, outside of obvious friendly jokes.

And P5 generally has far more scenes where they hang out as a group. They're interspersed throughout the game, instead of "big" moments like the camping trip and what not. Like, it's ridiculous how frequent they hang out together in P5. Not to mention the texting system, which gives the Phantom Thieves tons and tons of group interaction.

Nocturne had really great dungeons. But I believe Nocturne was made by P Studio too. SMTIV was disappointing in that regard.

Indeed, P-Studio also designed (and Hashino directed) Digital Devil Saga too. SMTIV was a step down from Strange Journey and Nocturne's dungeons, imo.

Yeah, I think I would like the Palaces a lot more if I didn't do them in one shot. I wish the game encouraged that a bit more, but you never want to waste your free time, especially in a first play through.

That's right when the game starts to get really good in my mind. Although if you haven't enjoyed any other SMT games, I don't know.

But the game does just only get better from there.

There's more than just that one gag and there's also the Lala character. And Ann.
Who after facing her own harasser in chapter one is blackmailed into posing naked by a character we're supposed to root for.
And that entire scene is played for laughs.

In P4, it's pretty clear that Yosuke is an idiot and an asshole in regards to Kanji. And I loved Kanji's arc, it's my favorite one in the game and I completely identified with him. Not gonna go into details but he was pretty much me in high school. The fact that he was questioning his sexuality because of his unconventional hobbies and because he was afraid of the perception of others was pretty on point imo.

Well yeah, I can agree with that to an extent but that's a problem with most RPGs. You're always the chosen one, everybody loves you and wants to be with you because you're just so damn special. Bioware is alway awful with that shit and there's some of that in P3, 4 & 5 too.

Man I wish I had more money stocked up for NG+, I only went in with 160,000 and that's not enough to buy a whole load of high end personas and still have enough money left for the rest of the daily stuff until mid game. Using level 70-80 personas should mean you pretty much OHK anything until mid game.

Maybe that's it. Pretty much played it since release no other game in between. Like even the general day of the game was tiring me out especially when it's a stretch of days where you can't even chose what to do

For dungeons a different approach may help. Fuse some personas, use some SP items and ambush enemies that you probably can't avoid.

Now that I've finished P5 I can definitely feel some form of liberation lol. So yeah take your time.

Uhm what? Ann is clearly into the mc basically since the beginning, it's made clear throughout many dialogues and their bond grows (rightfully so) throughout the various steps of her confidant "sidequest". I was a bit disappointed as well about the focus on the modeling stuff (although even that is mostly about her friend who was abused by Kamoshida), as i think there was the potential to explore different themes with her character, but that's just not true at all.

You aren't supposed to root for
Yusuke at that point. He's clearly antagonistic and delusional, and while his desire to paint Ann naked is played for laughs (which is a problem I suppose), the fact that he's willing to press charges over such a minor argument just goes to highlight how badly he's deluded himself into believing Madarame is a good person. I actually love the fact that he'd stoop so low to blackmail her, because it perfectly highlights how the individual members of the Phantom Thieves aren't great people, unlike P4.

The issue with Yosuke is that game doesn't distinguish his treatment of Kanji as an ultra bad thing. It's just Yosuke being Yosuke. Same with when he signs the girls up to the pageant without their consent or when he blackmails them into wearing swimsuits. He's a good guy with relatable issues, but those scenes are mostly treated as comic relief instead of something an incredibly shitty highschooler would do. Kanji's great, but the game blatantly dips its toes into him potentially being gay, but then backs out with a more general "I just want to be accepted", and it's frustrating. Especially when they use the "people thought he was gay" thing as a joke.

Just grab yourself a Persona with good physical attacks. That should get you through the first two dungeons with ease.

Make an even better game, hopefully? That's the thing, as great as this is, I can definitely see a lot of ways they can improve the next time around.

It's a good opportunity to prove that even without Hashino and Soejima, P studio can make good ass Persona games.

To me this really feels as the final Persona game they made.

So is there anything to do with confidants after they get to rank 10? Standing next to Ann in the mall right now, she's at 10, and it's letting me hang out with her again. Can you get any other bonuses or are there more scenes? Don't need to know details.

Have you finished the Death Confidant? During rank 10,

The problem is, even if we're not supposed to root for him at that point, this is how they introduced him. And first impressions go a long way. I know Yusuke is supposed to be a fun character but I have no desire to engage with him after he pulled that shit.
