I only played on normal but the last half of the game I never had any SP issues, mostly due to the gear you can buy off Tae. Most of the time I ended up facing the boss at around 70-80% SP left, which makes it a bit trivial. Additionally when you pick up more party members you can swap them around where they will heal SP when benched. Also the reason why the first couple of dungeons may be the most difficult as managing SP actually matters.

Did anyone finish the first dungeon on their first day in?

Ive got 0 SP on everyone and am really struggling to continue. I think Im on the 3F. Only reason Im hesitant is because in previous games you want to complete dungeons in one day to have enough time for social links.

Right, but that's not the case here. There's no social link penalty (well, unless you send a calling card), so take your time. No really, rushing through dungeons is going to make you experience some noticeable burnout.

Oh you played on Hard. That... sort of explains it. I bet you died a ton and had to suffer some obnoxious restarts.

I probably died as much as I did in SMT Nocturne, and did have some frustrating party wipes. I lost
two hours alone when I wiped on the final boss's
last sliver of health. I think Hard mode probably exposes the flaws in the placement of Save Rooms. I don't know, maybe I just take a long time in battles and that added up over time.

I played on Hard too and it still took me "only" 190 hours (which is already the lengthiest time I've ever spent on a first playthrough of a single player game lol), so I dunno. I'm a really slow player too. Unless he played like, without using fast travel at all and exploring the whole city after each story beat? I could see that adding up a lot of playtime.

Heh no, I tried to do that briefly when I started, but quickly switched to fast travel. I did wander around the cities, but nowhere near as much as I did in Yakuza 0.

Believe me, I feel you on the NG+. I wish we could do a NG+ without the dungeons, basically making it a VN. But I have Yakuza Kiwami coming, so I doubt I'd even have time for that.

Yes, it did.
We need less it made things too easy lol.

Finished the [Late game palace]
7th
Palace. It was really long in the tooth and had some weird spacing of save areas. Since I wanted to finish it in one game day, I decided to proceed through the dungeon one or two new save areas a day. It took me around
7-8 hours and Monday through Thursday or early morning Friday of this week to go through it
. At the end of the palace,
the Mini bosses consecutive fights were a little annoying and the rat maze puzzles were not that interesting specially because of how many of them there were. It's a shame to come from such a high note that is the Casino to an average palace that is the Cruiser. I might've been under leveled as I started the Cruiser at level 52 but didn't have difficulties with it due to just exploiting the weaknesses and ending the fights early with taking items/money/Persona. However, I used Rangda? the Magician Persona that negates Physical attacks a lot against the mini bosses which meant these fight took a long time
. Now I need to send the calling card and be done with it.

I did it, but only because I caved and used the Soma from the free item DLC. I know I shouldn't be trying to do dungeons in one day, but I like trying to do it.

It's really difficult to get through the dungeons in 1 day on your first playthrough because of SP, you eventually can get items to help with your SP but that comes later on. If you want to get as far as you can, save in every safe room and just melee/gun enemies and use whatever items you find to heal. Otherwise, don't worry too much, the confidants that you have unlocked at the start give you plenty of time to rank up.

If you want to have an easier time leveling confidants, get the Fortune confidant to rank 7 as soon as you can, since you get a perk that really comes in handy. (This character doesn't pop up for a while yet, but just wanted to give a tip before hand).

Thanks for the tips guys. I'll try to complete it in 2-3 days instead if its really not supposed to be completed in one day.

I did try to rush through certain dungeons on my first playthrough, or at least the ones that let me. Which may be why they are my least favorites.

Third, fifth, and seventh palaces for those wondering.

Just defeated (secret boss spoilers)
the twins solo!
The plat is pretty much mine now, just gotta finish the game to get those story confidants for the max confidant trophy. Man I'm so happy

(More secret boss spoilers)
I kinda regret not setting the difficulty to hard or something before fighting them, though. I was expecting normal to be enough of a challenge for me, but it felt way too easy. Either Yoshitsune is way too OP, or the twins are too weak...or both. Gonna leave a save before fighting them so I can give it another shot on a higher difficulty sometime.

I finally started playing this a bit again in the last couple days after another month long sabbatical (thanks work and life obligations... and general lack of interest in gaming).

I have a question though people -
I did Anne's 9th scene and despite wanting to pursue makoto I felt bad and went down the uh romance route so we're dating now ... this is an issue because I was basically just doing social stuff for about a RL hour and saved after the last dungeon... so Do I redo that hour or so of BS and just not date Anne to still go after Makoto or ?????

Yoshitsune is way too OP, yeah. If you're rocking Debilitate, you can straight up trivialize them.

Still working on getting my platinum trophy.. Im in NG+ and about to do Sae's palace. All I need is to catch the big fish, complete the compendium, get all drinks, defeat the twins and I think max all confidants.

The game is a breeze on hard though, the only boss I had problems with was Big Bang robot.

I really love this game to death though haha.

I had SP 3s on every character for the vast majority of the game and so SP was never an issue at all for me, yeah. Maybe that was cheap but I probably would have gotten overly frustrated otherwise, so I'm cool with it.

If you don't farm money/can't afford buying them for everyone that might require the hassle of switching them around when you switch party members, though.

Normal is fine yeah. P4Golden is probably the easiest game in the MegaTen line up due to how you can abuse the cards. For example even in the last dungeon you can pop out, play some low level dungeon to recharge all your SP and go in and fight the boss fresh.

Well, no one commented on my last ask so I just went ahead and rolled back to that earlier save, turns out I'd missed that I could even take books out from the library and I managed to also get 4 star guts to gain a new confidant. I'm probably not going to come anywhere near maxing this game out but I don't really care ? getting 100% really seems to be designed for a second or even a third playthrough.

Anyway , I took a stab at the boss of palace 6 and ... I'd swear this game doesn't display lifebars accurately enough. Boss 5 and boss 6 both have this thing where they seem like they should die in 1 or 2 more hits tops and they end up taking closer to 6 or 7 hits AND they have attacks that basically wipe the party when they're nearly dead. Not a fan !

Needless to say I'll have to beat boss 6 on another day...

Finally got my Platinum trophy tonight on NG+ and finished the game a second time.

Total playtime: 220 hours.

One my favorite games of all time.

I got my platinum today too. Congrats to both of us, haha

Somehow I feel even more empty completing the game on NG+ than I did on my first playthrough. Atlus can't release those spinoffs soon enough.

What game is the costume with the purple cape from? The music's pretty cool

Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. The Soulless Army and Devil Summoner 2: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. King Abaddon. The outfit belongs to Raidou Kuzunoha.

latest

The song is the battle theme from the second one, specifically. Those games had fucking rad soundtracks.

Kind of a silly question, but is it possible to ride the train to every destination without using fast travel? I had planned on doing my NG+ run with no fast traveling and AI teammates (for dat FES nostalgia) but I don't see a way to ride the train to destinations other than Yongen, Shibuya, and the school. Is there a different train track that I can take?

I'm pretty sure the battle theme is from the first one.

Finally getting back to the game after dropping if for over a month. Is lv 25 good enough to handle the boss of the third palace?

How long in terms of progress in the game did it take you guys to reach Charm Level 4?

I'm at dungeon 2 now and Charm is at 4.

Picked the game up after pausing a month and it instantly zzzzzz'd me to death. I cannot believe who shitty this game is paced. I just want to move on to the next dungeon and not be pestered with dialogue and events. P3 and 4 where nothing like this.

Fucking terrible sequel. I'm actually considering to just skip everything that seems irrelevant from this point on and only tune in when the next opponent is being introduced or discussed.

That's exactly how P4 was paced. P3 was slightly different in the sense that it had nothing going on for a whole month and then dumped everything in a full moon event, but I'd hardly call it good pacing.

I explored the city quite thoroughly and I'm pretty sure I never saw a train to Akihabara or Shinjuku, so I guess it's not possible?

Had to save after Palace 6 boss fight, really wanted to see the story scenes after that but alas, it'll have to wait for another day.
Anyone else who has been playing this since day 1 and still hasn't finished? My life is incompatible with 100 hour games lol. Problem is rpgs are my favorite genre and SMT is my favorite franchise.

I started it a few days after release and I'm half way through the 5th palace. Not tired of the game or anything, just time constraints and I have other long games on the go as well

Good call, the story stuff after palace 6 is almost a half hour long.

About it the week it came out and only beat it last week. I don't see a problem with that though. I've played played 3 and 4 over a pretty long span of time.

Claiming P3 and 4 were as meandering is plain revisionism. Not even sure how one can claim that with a straight face.

Not in Persona 3's case. There are very blatant dead months where nothing of note happens outside of the full moon boss battles. Just a monotonous repetition of the main gameplay loop with nothing to break it up.

P4 didn't really meander though, I agree (though I suppose the Golden epilogue content is arguable).

P3 had like 250+ stages in Tartarus. It has like 2x as much interactivity as Persona 5.

I finished Persona 1 on PSP last year and that was more fun than P5.

To their point, that's actually the issue: there's too much story in between the actual gameplay loop.

I see. It's like you said, P5 is borderline a VN.

Persona 1 is honestly pretty underrated as an RPG, so this is understandable.

...YA RIGHT

Never thought I'd see the day Tartarus would be used as a positive argument for P3. lol
You can always accept requests for Mementos to scratch that itch between palaces, and each palace by themselves have a lot more going on than any Tartarus section(or the whole place, really). And given the fact you'd complete a barricade in a single day around halfway through the game, which is when the fatigue system becomes irrelevant, it certainly did feel like meandering for the rest of the month (and even dungeon crawling felt like it too, since it was so basic and repetitive). P5 felt much better paced for what I look forward to in a Persona title.

I wasn't arguing P4 meandered but rather that it follows the exact same structure you're complaining about with dialogue and events, the main difference being it was an overall shorter game. At any case, I'll be revisiting P4 shortly so I'm curious to see how it holds up after P5.

I'm personally fine with it, but I get what people mean when they say the pacing is bad. I loved the 45 minute, non-playable sequence after the 6th dungeon, but I can see other people not being down for that.

As long as this game is, I actually would have enjoyed more moments to just get lost in the gameplay loop. One thing that's fun about Persona 4 is that you have a lot more control of the "story" that you're getting most of the time, since a lot of it is through social links. Then there's the short bits of story that lead up to a dungeon and the bits of story right after. Losing that freedom to "it's time to sleep" and days and days of story related content is definitely going to rile people up.
