How do you people feel about Japan not liking Junpei

I 100% agree with them.

But I don't hate him like they do.

Edit: Looking at the ranking list they put Yu first? Yu? Seriously. I have only one thing to say about that.

I would say that it's due to the anime, but Makoto is the most popular P3 character (these are from character polls before the movie was released), so it's literally voting yourself as the most popular character. Freaking lol.

Junpei is one of the best characters in the series, the hate for him is far more baffling than Yosuke even.

With regards to voices being annoying, the only English one I find particularly bad is Fuuka. Japanese Teddie(Kuma) is literally the worst thing.

I wonder why they dislike him, though.Maybe it's his behaviour in the early game.

I think it's because he treats you like crap for a portion of the game. He develops after that, but compared to Yosuke, who's your "partner" for the whole game and only give you crap during once the whole game, Junpei comes off as worse.

Of course this is if you ignore his development as a character, which is the main reason why he's awesome.

She won't have a character model but every character will get a Marie costume :3

I'd be fine with that. I like Marie's outfit.

I can see that. She would fit in it, too.

Yup. I hope we find out the character list reasonably soon after the reveal. I want to know who is and isn't included.

I actually love Japanese Teddie. I think it's a genuinely funny voice.

I don't like Fuuka's voice, and I don't like Yukiko's voice. A lot of the time I also dislike Fitzgerald as Chie. Too shouty.

Everyone else I like though, I think.

There are cultural reasons too. It's the same reason why Yukari is fairly popular among the Japanese fanbase. Junpei probably comes off as a bit more of a jerk to Japanese players.

I always thought Yukari was rather unpopular, but I guess her popularity just isn't as big as Makoto, Mitsuru, and Shinjiro's.

It's a stylistic thing. Soejima deforms the bodies, making them look older and preventing them looking like they have bobble heads.

He could still accomplish that without resorting to supernecks on most of the male cast. Yu, Makoto, and Dojima don't have one, in example

Oh, sorry for the double post.

She usually ranks fairly high among all the characters. Not as high as Aigis or Yu, of course. But she actually charts in the top 20 unlike Junpei. :p

Yeah, I know she barely skirts top 20, hence why I thought she was unpopular. But If you put her up against the P3 crew, she's in the top half in popularity I guess. Poor Fuuka, Junpei, and Akihiko don't even rank, and don't get me started on anyone who isn't a main character from P1-P2.

If that had been my first exposure to Teddie I would have needed to be turned around on him.

Thank god for Wittenburg. (Riegel is okay, but I feel like Dave did the more poignant stuff better)

That makes sense

I think in the Ultimax cover art, Soejima is playing up to the idea that Junpei is unattractive, the same way he does with Kanji.

He's failing miserably.

I know there's a translation difference there too. Atlus USA went out of their way to try and minimize Values Dissonance in Persona 3, to varying degrees of success. One of the most noticeable examples being where Ikutsuki first appears. In the English version, she makes a comment about getting used to his lame humor. In the Japanese version, she simply has a much more soft-spoken apology for it. Things like that can significantly affect how audiences view the character.

I would not be surprised if the same applies to Junpei in the game.

Dammit, Sophia. Now I've been reading TVtropes for 20 minutes now.

I dunno, I think it's pointless to deride a country for their different taste when they obviously have completely different values. Going by my hilarious limited knowledge of Japanese culture, he doesn't seem very appealing. He isn't cool, cute or attractive. He's loud and abrasive, and kind of a clown. I don't think his traits endear him to Japanese audiences. I think it's the same reason why Kanji isn't popular either.

You're being disingenuous if actually think that.

She has a blue background and she's fighting Sho. Is she a good guy?

Blue background is usually associated with a "normal character", as Sho, Minazuki, [Redacted] and Shadow Labrys all have blue backgrounds on the website. Can't check the trailers right now (from what I recall, [Redacted]'s trailer had a red background for theirs), but it might be the same thing for most of them, too.

Don't need to tell me, I agree with them and would put Junpei near the bottom of my personal rankings.

I was exaggerating, but it does seem odd that that the silent protagonists are the most popular characters in their respective series. It's not just like this in Persona though.

Not to get too deep into this argument again, but there are various P3 adaptions such as the manga, and the drama CDs (the latter of which is canon) where the P3MC does have a personality, so it's not like you're exclusively liking a silent protagonist if you're fond of the P3MC. And to that end, I never really saw the Persona protagonists as yourselves. It was more like you had complete control over their actions over the course entire game, but you weren't them. Liking him wasn't tantamount to liking yourself (especially if you aren't the type to roleplay as yourself while playing). I'm willing to go out on a limb and assume that the various P3MC fanblogs feel the same way.

The rule of character polls is that the MC must always come in #1, no matter what. Followed by their main love interest.

#1 Yu
#2 Yosuke

It checks out.
