PewDiePie Responds after using racial slur

It does come across as being fairly sincere. The overall attitude is much different than what happened last time. I think he might understand that it was wrong. Maybe he even legitimately feels bad.

But this was one step too far.

He has too much of a history at this point. He mentions that himself in the video. How many times does someone need to screw up like this for the places that host him (Twitch, YouTube) to ban him? I think it should have happened with this incident.

Calling someone that word should be an automatic ban to your account.

And with his history, it's obvious to the point of being a factual statement to say that he is a racist person. He's almost said it before, he's had other racial issues before, he heavily implied that he uses the word outside of his streams. And he's made other bigoted comments as well.

As far as I'm concerned, PewDiePie's professional streaming career should be over.

Fuck this guy, and the people who keep giving him chance after chance. Garbage apology from a garbage human being.

the apology flies in the face of his reaction on stream after he said the word.

does it really? i have never watched a pewdiepie live stream before, but from what i've seen from him he seems to talk a lot, all the time. but after saying it he seemed very quiet and had that "oh shit, i fucked up" air about him, even when commenting that no one who actually watches the stream cares, because he obviously knew it wouldn't stop there.

but maybe he doesn't really talk all that much during live streams anyway, i don't know.

Felix isn't a bad person on the inside, he really isn't,

You know him pretty well, do you? Give me a fucking break. You don't know shit about what kind of a person he is any more than the rest of us do. All I have to base my opinion of him on is what I have seen and heard from his public persona: someone who is repeatedly casually racist, sexist, homophobic and anti-semitic.

What do you base your opinion on?

Can we get a full transcription of what he said in the video, to avoid giving him money to watch? Or at least a mirrored link?

I got you.

Hello
I wanted to make a statement on
what I said in my previous livestream
You probably won't believe me when I say this,
but whenever I go online and I hear other players
use the same kind of language that I did,
I always find it extremely immature and stupid, and
I hate how I now personally fed into that part of gaming as well
It was something that I said in the heat of the moment
I said the worst word I could possibly think of
And it just sort of slipped out
And I'm not gonna make any excuses [as] to why it did
Because there are no excuses for it
I'm disappointed in myself because It seems like
I've learned nothing from all these past controversies
And it's not that i think I can say or do whatever I want and get away with it
That's not it at all
I'm just an idiot
But that doesn't make what I said or how I said it okay
It was not okay
I'm really sorry if I offended, hurt or disappointed anyone with all of this
Being in the position I am, I should know better
I know I can't keep messing up like this
And I owe it to my audience and to myself to do better than this
because I know I'm better than this
I really want to improve myself and better myself
Not just for me, but for anyone that looks up to me
Or anyone that's influenced by me
and that's how I want to move forward away from this
That's all I had to say. Thank you for watching. Bye

It took him 2 days to address it, I think it sounds like a pr company wrote it, and the way it is edited makes it look like he spent all afternoon trying to grind his way through it.

Plus he monetized the apology video.
The guy is a fucking piece of shit. The third post I quote illustrates perfectly why it's an insincere gesture from a disgusting individual with far too much attention.
LINK REMOVED Did he also apologise for using a homophobic term?
Ugh, please warn us before any link goes to his view count. Of course he said that shit.

Doesn't feel sincere, especially since he's had another video (the one where he goes "what a fucking ni..... ninja! ninja! yeah that's it tee hee") where he shows he clearly doesn't give a fuck.

Fuck this guy. He doesn't get the benefit of doubt.

He's a vile creature. There is no doubt left for any benefit to be given. It's thrice confirmed, now.

YouTube should demonetize anyone resembling this filth.

Because he used the "heated gaming moment" argument, and because it had 100 cuts dissecting everything he said and getting it approved by lawyers to slice it even more.
Ugh. Not only do I hate that it's a youtuber style edit. The fact that he's edited an apology video is even worse. Way to speak from the heart or even try to be sincere. Never liked this guy and glad I never tried to watch his garbage.

nah, it's totally possible it slipped out in the heat of the moment, it's just that if that was the case that reveals a lot about who PDP really is and how he thinks beyond the persona he normally portrays to his audience. It's not impossible for someone to have a racial slur slip out in the heat of the moment, but if that does happen it says a lot about the person who did so

What I was meaning was even in heated moments, the N word isn't in my bank of go-to words, because I never ever use it in real life. So if it is in there to be pulled out, then that person has a problem.

That said, I do think his apology is sincere, those jump cuts are standard PDP, and him "reaching for the most offensive word" makes logical sense. He of all people should learn to purge the word from his brain though.

Its kinda crazy what people can post there....YR really dont give a damn. No wonder the youth is so messed up when you encounter this shit lingu 24/7 on the net.

Settle down. The youth is fucked up for a number of reasons, YouTube comments being far from even a benign contributing factor lol.

Non-apology that flies in the face of what actually transpired and what he said after. This is to get the media off his back, nothing more.

One really good way to show he was being sincere would be to wade into the comments of his followers and to tell them to knock the shit off. But naw, that's not how this works with them, it's all winks and nods.

Took him 2 days to shit that out. Tells you everything you need to know

I do NOT accept and I am almost certain he will continue to use the word in private circles. He fucked up and showed his ass to the world and honestly I am fairly confident in saying nobody black accepts this shit, but everybody else can feel free to since the apology was more for yall anyway.

Without encouraging such behavior or accepting the use of that word, I believe internet just made a storm out of a word he let out of simple gaming rage. The fact that it was live didn't helped him. But to also be fair, he didn't apologied right away after saying it on his live stream, thing he should have done right away.

Stop trying to be a centrist. There is no legitimate justification for his use of the word. Anger is not an excuse for racism.

It's crazy that, in all likelihood, he's going to survive this just fine. In any other media, shouting something like that on-air is a career death sentence. Like, even Howard Stern probably couldn't get away with that.

At some point he's going to have to face the reality that he's been empowering racists (and yes even literal Nazis, true actual Nazis) his whole career and he continues to do it. At this point it's way past just an apology he needs to face what he's created and empowered with everything he's apologised for. Just check the comments of his own videos, what does he think when he sees that?

He's way past the point of pretending he's not responsible for it and it's had a huge impact on the gaming community. It's had a massive impact on the YouTube gaming community and that's not going to change with yet another apology. They will likely never really recover from his hateful actions and constant apologies.

He's got to actually face what he's done and the hero he's become to people who are actively out there spreading hate

Serious question....

For everyone that says they deem this to be sincere, how exactly are we defining sincerity?

I do think he means what he says. I do think he wants to change. I do think that he wants to be better. I do think he is ashamed of using these words.

I also do think he needs to fucking do something about it and not just fuck up, apologize, fuck up, apologize. How many 'second' chances does one person need?

As a white dude its easy to take his apology as sincere. If I was a black pewdiepie fan I would still be pretty disappointed.

Would you say that we should look at both sides of calling someone a fucking n*****?

I stayed out of the last thread because everyone was understandbly upset.

My take? He's pushing his luck. There have been way too many anti-semetic and racist jokes lately and sadly that means that's who he is or at the very least is an indication of who he surrounds himself with. The guy he was playing with is a huge part of the problem. Instead of telling his friend who clearly fucked up to own up and immediately apologize, he talked about internet overreaction, disney deals etc. He is bad company. If PDP needs to change, he needs to cut off these toxic people from his life, starting with this idiot.

Second, guys like PDP, Boogie and TotalBiscuit sound like immature idiots who were never taught by their parents simple things like owning up and apologizing for your mistakes. Watching that video, one thing was immediately obvious, he knew he had fucked up pretty much immediately. He went quiet. His face looked like his life had flashed before his eyes and yet his ego or poor upbringing just couldnt let him give a whole hearted apology on the spot. I watched that video for like 5 minutes waiting for him to apologize, to show remorse, to tell the people donating asking him to repeat the nword that he is not that guy and that no one should be saying that slur but nope. He either froze or just didnt have the right sense to apologize. I know he knows better. I could tell. But he just didnt have it in him to own up to it.

Took him two days but i sincerely cant tell if its him being sincere or if he had some PR firm write out that apology. two days is a long time in this day and age. Monetizing it doesnt help.

I have no love for this guy, he's clearly a waste of space, but to those who are saying "it's not enough" what would be enough?

Should he donate a ton of his money to a charity or educational foundation or something? Like I have no idea what he could do to fix it. If it was a one off, I guess the apology would be decent, but considering the repetitive nature of these things, what should he do?

I don't believe a word of that. Is he monetizing that video? If so every single cent should go to charity.

Stop being a racist? He didn't stop after the last time.

From what I have read (no way am I giving that video a click), he seems to sincerely regret the slip up, but until he really shows that he learned from this experience (unlikely imo), there's no compelling reason to believe that there will be a substantial change in his behavior.

It sounds regretful and as if he has gone through a mental process to get there, he's thought about it for 2 days, he realises he's become something he dislikes.

Don't get me wrong though, while I believe the apology, I don't think it's enough..not by a million miles. He oughta be publically joining an anti racism group, getting himself re-educated on why the word is so powerful in stupid hands, and making a substantial donation to a fight racism organisation.

Yes it's sincere, no, it's not enough. Nowhere near.

That would be a nice start. Other things to do would be to strongly condemn it, condemn others who do similar things, and to stop doing shitty things like this since this is far from his first offense. Address why it was so wrong and not just pass it as an immature and stupid thing he said by accident

Yeah I'm a junior but I ain't a burner account to be wasted defending this.

He apologised relatively quickly, which was the bare minimum expected, but as has been said he's gonna have a lot to prove before this should be accepted as genuine.

It's one thing after another with him and all this has done is made me feel foolish for sympathising with him somewhat over the 'death to all Jews' sign incident (not gonna just call it the 'sign thing' anymore he doesn't deserve people making him sound better) as him getting carried away in trying for an offensive 'joke'. His apology/attack on the media after that was putting him on the edge of the knife for me and now this has tipped him over.

I hope he improves so his fans have a better source of influence but I extremely doubt it and I'm done watching his videos.

Right, I must have forgot that "gaming rage" is an excuse for using one of the ugliest words in our language so thanks for reminding me.

Well that's just it. If this dude is on his 4th or 5th apologize for very similar behavior, why should this one be considered sincere?

Issue a real apology admitting his problems. Donate money to charities that deal with racial issues. Use his substantial platform to repudiate everything about this, including everyone bending backwards to defend him. Some more stuff too probably. When you're a serial offender it's hard to be taken seriously again imo.

"Just sort of slipped out"

Wooo boy. It's one thing to be immature and juvenile, it's another to use the most racist term you can think of in "the heat of the moment." Hooray for apologies, if the reaction thread didn't gain traction he probably wouldn't say anything and continue using it for whatever gaming situation he applied it to.

Frankly, it's good that maybe he's starting to realize his racist language has an effect.

Man, at least that awful Nick Robinson apology seemed sincere to some on the first read. This is blatantly him reading a PR piece someone gave him. This happened too many times before for him to actually feel remorse over this apology.

Plus, according to people here, he profits off the apology. That means he may just intentionally stir the pot for a quick buck in the future. This apology is literally set up in a way that reinforces this moron being a bigot.

I don't think anything is enough if it takes him this long to apologize so tepidly. The only way he could make up for it would be to go a long time without "accidentally" slipping racial slurs and alt right talking points into his videos.

It's certainly possible he's just a bad person who has no real interest in being better.

Would he have proactively apologised if no one had noticed or picked him up on it?

No?

Then he isn't sincerely sorry.

I don't fully agree with that, I mean, you can only apologize for something you did if you understand it was a mistake; and you can only know you've offended someone if they tell you, so sometimes a backlash is the only way someone will understand they fucked up. But, come on, it's 2017; he should be aware.

The big problem here is how long it took him to address this. He's a big streamer, this blew up almost instantly after he said the word, and it still took him two days to issue an apology that's all about himself, how he feels bad, how he may have offended someone, never explains WHY that word is bad so his millions of subscribers can understand why there's a need for an apology, and even fucking monetizes it. Here's the thing, PDP, you offended every single black person with that word. Even the ones who don't even know who you are. Because you're enabling that shit behavior, you're encouraging the use of that word, and those black people will definitely hear it from someone else.

You're perpetuating the problem and a simple "Sorry, my bad" won't cut it.
