There are 84 cars in all....this is just a partial list, actually....

Exactly what I was thinking. They look good, but not realistic. The lighting is a bit wonky also.
I think most of that is because of the colors they are showing. (i hope)

The lighting and reflections really make this game. They look dull in this car select bit, but on the track they're anything but.

Seriously, the lighting makes the game look almost cel-shaded in those pics. :lol

Just like in real life, basically. Take a shiny red balloon ball into a room with a lot of ambient lighting, it will look like a cartoon because all sides of it are lit the same way.

So you're telling me those models feature close to 100k polys (interior/exterior)
There's something odd about them.I think when it comes to modelling a car you can't go past the guys over at Polyphony Digital even on their limited polygon budget.

I think its the same problem Bizzare had with PGR2. just something about the way they make the paint color. it doesnt look natural. Forza had a similar look.

the reflections of the cars in the floor almost looks more natural than the cars themselves.

Damn guys, It's showroom flat light. You've all seen the latest footage with realtime reflections, don't sweat it. Anyway, I just caught a PGR3 commercial between Conan and lame Carson Daily. They showed some trailer footage with guys talking in the background. they're talking about where they're from and in the end the guty is talking about Sydney (I think) and he's talking about how wide open the roads are and how nice it is. Basically promoting the XBL aspect, pretty cool. 2nd 360 commercial I see on NBC including C0D2 (which is all CG dammit).

That Farboud looks fucking rediculous, they took no pride in the car select menu.

The Ultima seems like the only one that looks halfway realistic. Another launch time sacrifice?

Damn Gek, you're the debbie Downer of racing games. I'm all hyped for PGR and the camera just zooms in on your face as you say

Ha, maybe with out proper lighting and reflections the car select menu is actuallly 60fps and 720P :P

Sorry, just this select menu is dissapointing, I agree the lighting/reflections durring the race are ace.

i suppose thats what a car would look like if you put it in a grey room where the only light was coming from within the fucking walls. sans lightbulbs at that :lol

I agree. Polyphony was working with like 4000 polys per car...yet the results were amazing.

The couple models they showed on PS3 look hot as well.

This one in particular bothered me...

It just looks wrong. The lighting is terrible there.

I think jaggies are insisting on staying for the next gen.
Now now, wait until you witness them in person.

A PC game played in 720p without any AA looks absolutely beautiful. EXTREMELY clean and crisp image quality that is more pleasing than what a PC monitor delivers. Even without any AA, these games will look awesome.

Jaggies won't be a serious issue.

The xbox could do those models.
I'm sure it could do them within the menu system you see here (rendering just the car)...but there is no way the XBOX could handle these models within a game environment.

The problem is, despite all the extra polys here, the appearance of the cars is very similar to last generation. I will wait and see, however, as there is a lot of additional lighting during the game. Still, both PGR1 and 2 had shit lighting in comparison to the GT games (technically, they were superior...but the end results did not appear so)...

I agree.

Saw my 3rd 360 spot just now. This one was real life footage spliced with in-game footage of PDZ.
So far tonight I've seen

CoD2
PGR3
PDZ

Yeah thats what i was getting at, its disapointing that in the part of the game where they get to showcase just the car.... and it looks shithouse. Its absolutely horrible looking at those models. They could have done better, had they tried.

The models are clearly detailed beyond any other racing game to date, but look at the kind of jump we had last gen...

From this...

to this kinda thing...

I did some lazy stuff in MS Paint, and even lazier crap in Flash MX.
I am by no means an expert in Photoshop and don't claim to be. I just got bored.

The ambient lighting being very bright reduced the contrast of the shadows.

Also, for the same reason you aren't seeing self shadowing on the cars, which is definately occurring in game.

I increased the contrast, and added an el cheapo self shadowing shadow to the car...
