PHANTASY STAR: GENERATION 2 (Finally!!)

Buh? I don't remember there being 2 Anna's in PS2.

I always figured Rolf (Eusis? Ugh) was of Alis' bloodline. So was Alys, from PS4, no? It would explain Rolf's nightmares, and how he shows up as a spirit within the Elsydion sword in PS4. G-d, I can't wait for this trilogy to hit!

And, thanks Ferricide!

nice, remake of the best genesis RPG ever...

but will it come out here? :( I don't have the cash for a japanese PS2 yet

uh, me either. wonder if it's a typo? i can't remember what one or the other is called, though.

gamefaqs will know!

yeah, it's "amy", not anna, for the character that should be named "anne".

Yep. Amy, the good doctor.

I remember going to my good friend's house and watching him and his brother play Phantasy Star 2. I watched the amazing final boss battles. The animated battles were light years beyond FF1,2 or even 3 (IV and VI Jap).

The 2 final bosses blew my mind.

Cool story: My friend managed to run away from the 2nd to last boss and fight the last boss.

Btw - PS2's standard battle music is awesome; I used to leave the game in a battle for awhile just to hear that awesome tune.

You could flee from Dark Force?! That doesn't sound right.

G-d, the standard battle and boss battle themes in PS2 are FANTASTIC.

Yes, you could flee from that boss. I distinctly remember the conversation, and I heard they tried countless times because no matter how much they tried, they could not actually defeat him.

Luckily for them, it seems the final boss was easier.

The same friend turned me onto this forum, but I don't know his forum name so I can't verify it unless I remember to ask him about it the next time I see him.

IIRC, Dark Force was trickier because he could take over some of your characters. But... didn't using the Neisword as an item counter some of his abilities? My memory's a bit hazy. The Mother Brain fight was more straightforward.

Anyone who's played a Phantasy Star knows that Dark Force is at the end somewhere. Mother Brain wasn't exactly a plot twist, either. And if folks reading this haven't played a Phantasy Star, then they should be shot. The games are ancient, for g-d's sake!

LOL, ok well then I guess I can.

I definitely remember them getting their @$$3$ beat by Dark Force and having the team attack each other. The biggest problem was weak Amy dying. She was their healer so whenever she kicked the bucket, the rest of the team would follow shortly.

They definitely ran away from DF and reached Mother Brain as a result.

The same friend turned me onto this forum so if he happens upon this thread he can confirm it, but I don't know his forum name off the top of my head.

And I used to LOVE the standard battle music.. sooooo friggin awesome even to this day!

I think having Rolf use the Neisword in combat as an item would remove Dark Force's possession from his companions. Not 100% on that.

And, for me, Amy NEVER had enough TP to be my sole healer for the final two battles. By that point, I always had a FULL stock of Trimates with all of my characters, and at least 1 Star Mist and Moon Dew for each.

PSII's soundtrack is just amazing in general. it's hugely distinctive. as far as 16-bit games go, it's roughly comparable to say ... shin megami tensei: nocturne, or something, in terms of being just slightly shifted to the left of the average game. it definitely had its own look and feel and gameplay ...

Well, they had tons of Trimates also (healing potions, right?), but having her alive was the difference between barely staying alive, and slowly dying 1 at a time.

I don't know if they knew the Neisword stuff, as GameFAQs and strategy guides didn't really exist back then. $h1t, I don't think EGM was out then.

Agreed. I liked Phantasy Star IV more in most respects, but PSII has a certain quality, from the sparse text and translation, to the distinct graphical style and unique music, that just divides it from all other games. I'm not saying it's the best game out there, far from it. It just feels completely different from any other game I've ever played (including other Phantasty Stars), and I've never been able to define quite why.

Hence the Star Mists and Moon Dews. One of those healed everyone's HPs (Star Mist?) and the other resurrected a fallen companion (Moon Dew?)

Phantasy Star II CAME with its own strategy guide. At retail. I still have mine.

That's right, it did! It had a weird, He-Man-ish cover, and was yellow, wasn't it?

Maybe they did know, but still got schooled? I know they ran from Dark Force though.

Each battle lasted them at least half an hour.

Damn, thinking about that and all the stuff that Sega puts out year after year makes me realize that even when Sega puts out real turds, they really really try to cater to gamers out there instead of being in it solely for the money.

An even bigger "damn" is that it's late and I'm repeating myself without even realizing it. Time to hit the sack!

The PSII cover (and strategy guide artwork) were painfully horrible.
yeah, amazingly, amazingly horrid. the japanese cover is awesome and i don't see any reason it wouldn't've worked here.. it's not like CRAZY WEIRD ANIME or anything. i'm pretty sure (judging from the results) that sega USA didn't even have (or had a policy of not considering) japanese production artwork from the games it put out here. IIRC no genesis games had the same cover as they did in japan?

my "favorite" is PSIV's US cover though. getting boris vallejo to do it .. W T F

I always thought they used the Hildebrandt Brothers for that one. Would have looked nice too if not for the fact that none of the characters look as they do in the game (are western artists allergic to anime or something?)

Sometimes, at least in the game business, it seems they're allergic to style.

So seeing how this is just being released in Japan now, and with no sign of Phantasy Star IV, a February 1st release of the Trilogy seems unlikely?

I'd concider it a miracle if Phantasy Star Trilogy makes it out in 2005, concidering the time between PSI and PSII releases.

no, its vallejo. it's signed.

uh, i dunno. can schlocky fantasy book cover painters do anime? it seems unlikely. some japanese artists can sort of blend the two, but it seems like western artists who have no grounding in or appreciation for anime can't really "get" it and thus can't really do anything to replicate it.

i always found it particularly odd when games in the late-16 / early 32 bit era tried to cover up the animeness which would be IMMEDIATELY apparent as soon as you turned the game on. PSIV is so full of anime-style stills it's not like it can be obscured.

on that note, that game did a fantastic job of cinematic storytelling for a cartridge game. best ever, in fact, i'd say.

I agree on the soundtrack. It is quite awesome. Perhaps Tokuhiko Uwabo's finest work.
