Phantasy Star Generation: 2 -- Original PSII Included

For those of you who are crying about the new art and music in the Sega Ages remake of Phantasy Star II, you'll be happy to know that the original Mega Drive version is included on the disc as well, and immediately playable right from the main menu (no need to unlock it or anything).

Also, the updated version looks for clear data from PS Generation: 1, which might be interesting (no idea what happens as I haven't gotten around to clearing G:1 yet).

Yeah it's been announced on the site for a few months now. I wonder if this will turn out any better than the other Sega Ages... T_T

At this rate, the PS collection for PS2 will be out in the middle of next-generation...arrrgh. Hopefully, they'll rework whatever Sega and the developer working on these screws up. I could deal with the awful portrait artwork, but the music should be no problem to have an option for alternate/original music during play.

I don't expect Phantasy Star Trilogy to land on U.S. shores....until 2007 at the soonest.

(Japan)
PS:G1 - 2003
PS:G2 - 2005
PS:G4 - 2006-2007 ?

Maybe it unlocks the first game?

That would be pretty cool. :) Dunno though. I'm sure the info will come out of Japan soon enough. I still have about 10-15 hours left in G:1 so I probably won't be able to find out on my own anytime soon...

See, maybe if they would've included the emulated originals in the Sega Ages pack, people would've *maybe* forgiven their hack job remakes residing on the same disc as long as they were easily ignorable.

I'm still interested to see how PS2 remade turns out. I remember way way back in the day seeing in development shots of the original PS2 in EGM or something where they had the backgrounds and close-up pictures of townspeople when you talked to them. As long as the original is on there I probably will be less angsty about the remake.

I don't see what the big deal about the new character art is. It's just based around the newer PSO style, thats all. As for the music, well, I have yet to hear how it sounds, but judging from what others say, it seems pretty bad.

I guess I will find out when the whole thing gets here. I think the games are classics, and no matter how much they may alter them, the original premise of a good game will still shine through.

I still play through a PS, FF and DQ game at least once a year, and thanks to these updates, it'll be a little easier on the eyes and ears.

I actually like the new art quite a bit. I guess that's because I'm not that attached to the originals though. I've owned the games forever but I only really started getting into them in recent years. The old art is pretty butt ugly IMO, but I can understand the nostalgia value.

Hopefully, my preordered Trilogy will ship sometime this year. I'm starting to think PSU will be out first ... in English.

I'm keen on the new art, too.

Word on the street in Japan is that Trilogy isn't happening anymore (in the US). Just a rumor, though, so don't get your panties in a bunch just yet.

I'd be content if they just released 1 and 2 together in a package, or hell I'd buy them separately. IF Conspiracy (or whoever was going to bring it here) drop it, I hope someone else picks it up.

The new art is fugly still if you ask me. It's not because the designs are bad (they're pretty good except for Nei's ears) but because the style is just terribly uninteresting even by generic anime standards.

I want to see how they do PSIV when the time comes.

Very nice. I always enjoyed PSII and III aesthetically- it was just the monotonous dungeons that prevented me from ever getting very far into the games.

Naturally once PSIV came out, the main comparison and competition was FFVI... and in my mind there was no competition there. FFVI dominated it in practically every category for me.

I'm willing to give these oldies a shot again, I think. :D

Too late. They're all bunched up now :/

yeah, i agree. well, on the "generic" ... "fugly" is an overstatement. there's this vague air of amaturishness that hangs over the entire game, but in general it's really competent. really, given how insanely shit not only sega ages 2500 can be but simple 2000 etc typically are, we're pretty lucky with the two PS remakes so far.

on the other hand, i am not that optimistic about IV's chances of coming out of it being great. the high res graphics will be neat, but IV already had great graphics, and the cinema sequences were really stupendous at the time. i doubt they'll be able to better them in anything but resolution, especially presuming they continue using the same mediocre artist.

Thanks for the cool preview Ferricide. If it's it meets the approval of a fellow PS2 fan I'll pick this one up. The battle tweaking sounds interesting actually.

Makes me wary too. I wish they'd use a better artist instead of the person they have now. For example, the artist for Wild Arms 4th Detonator (which has some pretty cool villain designs as well as artwork) is pretty good and keeps in line with the "shiny new" look that they seem to be gunning for.

Ferricide, I picked up the remake after reading your impressions and is it normal that I'm finding the game extremely difficult?

Like when the game first starts and you're lvl.1 or 2, if you get in a random battle with say 3+ enemies it's instant game over because run never freaking works. Even when level grinding the enemies do a lot of damage and my attacks miss a lot (using auto command because normal input is SLOWWW). Then one time I got into a battle with some self-healing bear and he cast protect on himself and none of my attacks would do over 2 damage and he had 14hp and would heal himself to full every round. Since run would never work I spent forever in that stupid battle even though I was high enough level that I didn't need to worry about damage.

So 1 hour in and still not even at the first dungeon because I'm just grinding to survive. Having never played a PS game before is this normal? Or am I doing something wrong?

thanks,

thanks,

The first 2 PS games are very tough, with absolutely massive dungeons (and require quite a bit of grinding in certain parts - especially the beginning), but I dunno much about what they did with the new version... I don't remember any self-healing bears near the beginning of the original PSII. Sounds like they made the remake even tougher :P If it's anything like the original, I suggest you start small and fight the fire ants and Poisoners (who give you a lot of Meseta) for now, and make sure you have both "Ryuka" and "Hinas" spells before tackling the first dungeon.

make sure you have both "Ryuka" and "Hinas" spells before tackling the first dungeon.

Which is harder now, since you learn the second one at level 11, instead of 8.

As for impressions. It's a good remake, but I don't like that it forces you to talk to everyone before proceeding.(And I beat the original, that was not part of it.) For example, if you just go to the first dungeon and talk to the Rascal who has the key and letter without talking to everyone, you would get them in the original. Here, the Rascal just says "....." and you're left wondering why.

really? i didn't find the remake to be quite that painful. in fact, if anything, i'd say it's definitely easier than the original megadrive version.

i mean, yeah, it's not an easy game, but i certainly didn't have any problems marching straight through the world and to the first dungeon and wandering around in it. i certainly didn't stop to raise levels. it's tough, but it's no tougher than the beginning of dragon quest VIII or something, IMO.

i only ran once, and it worked, but did you not go pick up nei or something? wait, the game forces you to pick up nei... i don't know what's going wrong here. ^_^;; buy her a second steel claw and buy yourself a second knife... and then when you get to the second town, go back to your house and pick up rudger. once you get three people it gets less punishing.

i wonder what's wrong, though, because like i said -- it's not as nearly tough as the original MD version. because you can defend better, you can attack better, and you can walk faster, letting you get the hell out of danger quicker. i remember so many instances of walking so slowly and almost dying trekking back to town in the original =P

you also get ryuker at level ... maybe 9? and then hinas at 11. ryuker will make your life easier (teleports back to town.) i wouldn't really do the first dungeon until you get those. i dabbled in the dungeon but i didn't finish it yet, walked in and out, and got hinas during that time.

enh, it's not that slow... you should really use manual because you get the experience bonus, you can use level 3 attacks (a must with nei becuase she's so fast she never misses).

weird. did you wander off into the corner of the map or something? it's one of those games that's got tougher enemies across bridges and stuff, ala dragon quest.

If PSII comes included with PSG2, it lessens the chances of it being part of the trilogy. Which makes the release of the trilogy unlikely.

So this is not a good sign at all.

If I was Sega, I'd cancel the trilogy. It's not worth selling games that don't even sell 10K copies. Nobody wants it.

Speak for yourself, I'd buy this in a heartbeat.
