4Gamer has some shots and info about the Smartphone version.

  • Dec 2012
  • Has a Quest mode similar to the PC/Vita version; Beat the boss in the deepest area/Find a certain drop from enemy, etc...
  • No cross play with PC/Vita, it will pull your data from the servers and let you play with NPC versions of your friends though
  • Exp gained and items found in the mobile version will also appear in the PC/Vita version
  • Mobile version also lets you use scratch cards, train your Mag, and it has a Community section but none of these features were available in the TGS demo

BFYB3.jpg

They also demoed Vita/PC cross play today on the SEGA TGS Stream. If you missed it you catch it on Nico Nico (Requires an accout). Actual gameplay starts around the 14 minute mark.

Tomorrow they'll have Sakai (Producer) and Kimura (Director) speaking with Mashiyama (Smartphone Director) on the Ustream link. On Friday they'll just have Sakai & Kimura and on Saturday the whole gang will be on stage including Sugenuma (Vita Director). Here's a countdown for the events:

I'm on the train from TGS atm, will post impressions from the Vita/Smartphone versions and the new zone/boss when I get home.

Also, I was able to take a picture with Sakai-san and briefly talk with him about the game!

The screenshot from the smartphone version almost looks like a turn-based PS classic style game.

I know it's not, but that would be kind of a cool alternate way to play.

TGS Impressions~!

Vita version

The lack of aliasing is visible and sadly there are still pretty big slowdowns sometimes. Overall, the game runs much better than I expected it too, but still needs polish to become a truly enjoyable experience.
Accessing the subpallet via the touchscreen is welcomed feature, but it seems you're able to use items by pressing the buttons as well.
One thing that I really didn't like, was that the confirmation button is the same as the one responsible for picking items. During the short talk I had with Sakai-san I addressed this concern, but was told it works the same as in the PSP1/2(i), meaning that holding the button lets you pick up items.
I still have mixed feelings about the Vita version, mainly because of the mentioned slowdowns, but I understand that it's a work in progress and hope that those issues will be resolved. On the other hand, the game isn't much of a looker either - a bit too pixelated for my tastes.
Despite all that, I'm still hyped for this version and hope all is well in time for the release.

Smartphone version

The system details are explained in the Bumped article which Killthee posted above. As for the gameplay itself, fights are rather easy if you know what you're doing - few hits and the enemies are down.
You can use Photon Arts and chain them with normal attacks, dodging requires appropriate timing although it's rather forgiving.
It's also possible to summon your allies, but I totally forgot about that while playing and haven't used that feature even once.
Will download day 1 but probably won't play it at home where I have access to the much superior PC (Vita) versions. Production values are definitely there though, so don't worry for it to be some kind of a cheap tie-in.

New field and boss

I like the look of the ruins but as for the boss... The fight was really hard, but that's to be expected when playing with randoms - when we had a minute left and I tried to do a triple mag attack, no one joined me, despite everyone having their bars fool. It certainly isn't a easy fight though, since there are no easily reachable by everyone weak spots (or at least I didn't notice any) and it hits quite hard.
What I really liked was the size - this new baddie is definitely bigger than all the previous bosses, at least while standing.
All in all, I can't wait for the new field update!

Other stuff

When I was leaving TGS I stumbled across Sakai-san, took a picture with him and talked for a bit. Most importantly, I've asked him about Phantasy Star Portable 1/2/2i not being on the Vita. Sadly, because making the PSP series playable on the Vita would be a really hard thing to do, it probably won't happen. Don't keep your fingers crossed I guess.

Love the impressions Keii, thanks.

Sega is teasing some new information for the Vita version of PSO2, coming tomorrow at 2:40PM. Could we get a release date?

So it behaves like every other game in the series, pretty much; PSO, PSU, and PS Portable all did this. PSO2 does this as well if you play with controller.

I totally didn't know about the holding the button down to pick up items until about a month ago though.

Yeah, that's exactly what I was told and I felt pretty stupid at that moment.

Can't think of anything else that could be announced. Either that or the announcement of a limited edition Vita with the game & a code for in game stuff like the Premium Package.

Yeah, that's exactly what I was told and I felt pretty stupid at that moment.
IMO, it works better when you remap the confirm/cancel buttons by flipping them. That way lets you still use the O/B button to pickup the items, but it doesn't let you confirm something when you were trying to pickup something.

I see myself playing the Vita version a lot when I'm on the go.

What they really should do, assuming all versions connect to the online servers, is allow both the Vita and Smartphone versions to connect at once, and have the Smartphone version dedicate itself to in-game communications (pub/party/team chats and whispers, symbol arts, etc) and menu functions like equipment and item management.

4gamer uploaded PVs of PSO2 Vita and smartphone version.

Edit: Thanks for the impressions, Keii. Though I'll probably just stick to the PC versoion. :p

Framerate is terribad on the Vita version but it's still early in development. I wouldn't mind if the game has to look like the PC version on minimum settings and sub-native res if that meant keeping a stable 30fps. Sometimes I play like that on my laptop and it still looks pretty good.

It's not "early" in development - that was the case when they've shown it for the first time, but it's going to be released in a few months, so they need to step up they game.

Biggest gripe right now: you can happily search the entire shop for certain abilities/souls, yet you can't search your own storage for it. Slowly scrolling through 500 stored items for certain abilities is not fun in any definition of the word.

First quarter 2013 feels like it's still a ways off, I wanted to sound optimistic with "early" and Sega hasn't given a definite release date (Unless Mr. Sakai told you something you're not telling ;). Normally framerate optimization is taken care of in the last couple of months anyway so I think it'll be alright.

Sadly, no. I didn't want to complain too much, because all I'd hear would be "it's a work in progress".
But I hope you're right about the optimization.

What did you think about the user interface Keiician? It looks pretty big on the promo videos and I guess it sort of has to be for the touch controls to work, but it seems like it could very easily get out of hand.

To be honest, it didn't bother me at all. The subpallete and other stuff that's always on screen doesn't look big in all. As for the chat pop ups, I don't think many appeared during my quest and I don't remember being annoyed by them at all anyway.
I doubt they'll allow a situation in which you can't see anything because of the bubbles, though.

New announcements today. All things coming in the second half of this first big update:

-lvl 50 cap
-very hard mode
-subclasses. You can set any class as your subclass and use all the PAs and techniques of that class. You will also get 20% of that classes stats added as a bonus.

Wait, wait. The current update is 新たなる力, it was divided in 2 parts and the second is coming next week, ie. the extended team features etc.
The mid-size update, 必滅の呼び声 which is supposed to contain the features you've listed is supposed to come in October. Did something change?

Sorry, the new stuff I talked about above is indeed coming in 必滅の呼び声 -- not part 2 of 新たなる力. Nothing changed, I was just confused as I don't know the release schedule well and thought 必滅の呼び声 WAS part two.

So, sounds like October?

Their naming system is just confusing. Using Google to translate the roadmap it looks like the "first large update" is really 4 updates being deployed during Sept (Part 1) & Oct (Part 2). The "Autumn medium size update" (Ruin) doesn't seem to have a date set yet.

I think Ruins will be added with the level cap increase though, as we don't really have any 40-50 area now.

We're getting V Hard mode with the level cap though. They'll probably want us to slog through V Hard Forest - F Continent for a bit before they drip feed us with Ruins.

I hope your right though cause I don't to wait till late Oct/November for Ruins.

No skills though?

Damn!

I wanted Brave Stance on my Defense Tree Hunter :(

Seems like it could work if they let you have half the SP of that class tree as long as you leveled them both like FF11.

For example, if it worked like FF11, and you have both Hunter and Fighter at level 50;

Hunter being your primary you get 50 SP for the Hunter tree (not including the Ohza/Lisa/Marlu quest bonus)
Fighter being your subclass you get 25 SP for the Fighter tree

Would be a decent reward for leveling both classes to cap. As it is now there is really no reason to level a class if you're just using it as a subclass.

Plus you won't be able to use any gears from your subclasses. Could be problematic if you want to use Double-Sabers, Twin Daggers, or Wands, which rely heavily on their respective gears.

Hmm. Stats, huh?

I was expecting to get skills, not stats. Have to do some more thinking about what I'm going to pick, then... :p

Edit: Wait a second, Bumped is saying the opposite:

The subclass system allows you to use two classes at the same time. You could be something like a Hunter/Force, or Ranger/Hunter, Fighter/Gunner, etc. You can use the subclasses photon arts, technics, and skills but there’s a catch. You can only use the main class’ weapon types. So how can a Hunter apply weak bullet to the enemy when only assault rifles can perform that skill? The loophole in the subclass system is dependent on weapons that can be equipped by all classes. For example, if you are a Hunter/Ranger, you can apply weak bullet by using the bouquet rifle, then you may switch to a hunter weapon type to attack the area.

If Bumped is right, that sounds... dumb, unless they start making a lot more all-class weapons.

Regardless of which one is true, or even if they both are, Force still seems like the best subclass for me.

Force is the only class without any specific weapon-based skills at all, and 20% of anything's stats would be good, since even the "low" stats on a class are still significant.

I actually might subclass FO instead just to get the T-DEF bonus.

That magic shit hits Hunters pretty hard.

That is unless some of the skills we had in alpha are going to be added to the trees when the cap is raised. I want 'Flash Tech Guard' for my HU, as well as Iron Will and Guard Stance: Poison

Hasemo

(;・∀・)ハッ?
Even if they add new skillls to the trees, I doubt they will allow for one free respec, which is a bit sad.

As for the subclasses, I'd probably go with HU on my Fighter, just to be able to equip better units.

Yeah, that sounds asinine and backwards, whats the point of the subclass system if there's virtually no benefit to using it except through a loophole that you either have to grind out or buy from a player shop. I think doing something akin to limiting the player to not being able to equip weapons over a certain rank would work better.

If I remember correctly this is how it worked in PSU, I think forte fighters could equip S rank of their specialised items and A rank handguns etc.

I've forgotten since I haven't used Gunslash since forever, but weren't Forces unable to use Techs while they had it equipped? If theyre still required to wield a Force weapon to use Resta there goes the entire reason to subclass Force.

I think the main point of subclassing is for the stats bonus and some of the earlier skill tree stuff. Suddenly Guard Stance becomes super useful for a FOhu.

I wonder what the Japanese players think about the weapons restrictions for subclasses.

I hope the developers either reconsider allowing subclass weapons to be used, or I hope they release actually useful weapons (non joke weapons) that can be used by all classes.
It would be really unfair otherwise, when it comes to the currently available weapons that can be used by all classes, Forces and Techers would be the best subclasses, since one of the Talis that can be used by all classes is the 2nd best Talis available currently, Duel Gaze.

EDIT: I would rather have access to all weapons from the subclass than the 20% bonus stats thing, I actually would rather have no bonus stats from the subclass at all, enemies die fast already. ._.

I wish I knew Japanese now though, so I could complain about this. Unless Japanese players shared my point of view though, I doubt my opinion would matter at all anyway… :|

I've finally decided to throw myself into this game, but I can't get past character creation. I'm getting far too caught up trying to make it look perfect. :( Am I just wasting my time here? v.v

No. You'll be staring at that character for a while so might as well get it right the first time. I think I redid my character 3 times before I nailed the look I wanted.

I got so frustrated I ended up giving up for the night. Options are a blessing and a curse. =(
