Though Sega released a teaser trailer for Phantasy Star Universe at last year's E3, the company has been mum on the game since, offering very few details about the title publicly. That is, until the May 2005 issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly that just started hitting subscribers, where Sega goes in-depth on the game for the first time anywhere. For the full story on the offline and online modes of PSU, check out the new EGM in stores, and read on to see the extended version of their interview with Sega R&D creative officer Yuji Naka.

EGM: Could you briefly explain the history of the project?

YN: The series has now entered its fifth year, and this is the right time for a new start. Online RPG games are basically limited, but I want to move on and make a difference in the genre. I spent a very long time on the PS series, and we've spent many years and we've gathered a lot of feedback from the users. So, we certainly have a lot of stuff to include in the game.

EGM: Did the PS2 HDD support dropping affect your plans?

YN: I'm not going to change my mind, and Sony will still support our network game, even without support for the HDD. Actually, I haven't even shown this game to Sony yet...you're the first people outside the company to see it. Nobody even knew what platform it was going to be on until today.

EGM: It's rather late in the PS2's life cycle...any chance of porting this to other systems?

YN: I'm not quite sure yet...the PS2 is the hardware with the biggest market right now, and the next-generation platforms won't have a very large installed base at first. It would be fairly risky to launch an online game for these new systems too early.

EGM: What has been the greatest challenge in PSU's development?

YN: Actually, we're still in the middle of development, and the most difficult part of making an online game is making the network stable. So the hardest part is still to come, about one or two months before the game is finished.

EGM: What will you do about cheaters?

YN: We have experienced the cheaters for five years, so we've piled up a lot of know-how of how to deal with them. I think our security is pretty high, nearly 100%. The PSU security will be like that of PSO: BB with server-side characters and info.

EGM: Could you share some of your memories of working on the original Phantasy Star games?

YN: From the beginning of the series, I always wanted to surprise users -- to make something unique and creative, and I kept that as my design philosophy all these years. I still advise my producers to make something new and interesting. Because I felt like this, that's why I've been able to keep creating games for 21 years.

EGM: The Sci-fi theme makes PSU unique&do you enjoy the sci-fi theme personally?

YN: I do enjoy that type of atmosphere, and you see that most of the RPG games are set in the middle ages with an ancient atmosphere, but I wanted something set in space, in the future. Everybody likes Star Wars, and everyone has a curiosity about the future.

EGM: Sonic Team's GC games have done very well in the U.S. Will you continue to support GC?

YN: I want to continue to support GameCube, and I'm currently developing a title for it.

EGM: PSP and DS are both out now -- how do you feel about each one?

YN: As Sony says, the PSP is a portable PlayStation: You can play PlayStation games anywhere without having to use a TV. It's a very nice platform. But the DS has added two all-new factors to have fun that no one has ever done before, so Nintendo has created an interesting, innovative way to play games.
...

Confirms server-side saving. Wahoo!

Offline and online modes also confirmed, for those that didn't catch on in the last thread.

Oh, and it's on PC too.

Also mentions a new title for GameCube in the works.

Wow.. and... WOW.

EGM: Are you excited about the next gen consoles, or do you think it's too early?

YN: I think it is too early.

I agree with this man... and his DS PSP comment was interesting.. PSP is a portable Playstation... but DS is new and different... hmmmm

Sheesh, talk about boring. Could he have been any more safe with each answer?

And is this game going to use the HDD? I really couldn't glean from his answers what the deal is.

EGM: Sonic Team's GC games have done very well in the U.S. Will you continue to support GC?

YN: I want to continue to support GameCube, and I'm currently developing a title for it.

I hope he's not referring to the new Shadow the Hedgehog game.

I think it is too early. The PS2 and GameCube are still both very good platforms.

Xbox as owned?!?!?!?! Is that a shot at the system, or is he excluding it because he already knows about the new hardware, or does he just not work with it and not give two shits?

Could be all of the above.

Nice interview. I loved PSO 1-3, but I'll admit, I never played them as often as I'd of liked... cos I'm lazy. I'm looking forward to this.

EGM: Did the PS2 HDD support dropping affect your plans?

YN: I'm not going to change my mind, and Sony will still support our network game, even without support for the HDD.
Does this mean that PSU uses the HDD even without Sony's support? It's difficult to understand which way the answer goes.

Actually, I haven't even shown this game to Sony yet...you're the first people outside the company to see it. Nobody even knew what platform it was going to be on until today.
:lol

man, that's not exactly a good answer

He meant he's not going to change his mind (about the platform) just because Sony isn't supporting the HDD anymore. He said that Sony'll still be supporting developers who are making online games for PS2 in a big way, and PSU doesn't make use of the HDD anyway.

He was.

God I wish this was single player offline... Give me a PSV for next-gen please and I can die a happy man!

Thanks for the clarification.

Are there going to be any new images of PSU in the next EGM, or is the interview all there is?
Lotsa new images. You can sneak a peek at the mag's cover on the page with that interview, too.

Chalk this being a PS2 exclusive to M$ releasing Xenon a year ealier than everyone else. I for one would really like to play a game like this on Live. As it is, I wouldn't touch this with a ten foot pole on Sony's "network".

I want somebody to create a controller that actually looks good -- a controller that you hold that actually makes you look good. When you hold a normal controller, you bend over and don't look very cool: I want a controller that makes you look cool like when you're playing a guitar. That kind of factor could push games beyond movies in the entertainment industry.

Must remember to never read anything from Yuji Naka in the future.

I'm sure that if Sega didn't put his testicles in a vice, he'd still be pursuing failures on non-Sony hardware. =_=

Fine by me, that's the Sega I love. Nipple clamps and genital mutilation. FOR THE SAKE OF THE GAMES (read: money)!

They talk about an offline mode, and we know that part has some nice cinematics...

I haven't gotten the latest EGM yet, unfortunately... I really hope this game has some kind of offline component. (I've been on a Phantasy Star kick over the past few days--picked up C.A.R.D Revo and started messing with that, and dusted off my old ep. I and II character, playing offline with both and having a great time.)

EDIT: Thanks for confirming there's going to be offline play, BuddyC. :)

On the other hand, I suspect the game won't be plagued with 'microtransactions' on Sony's 'network', either. If the game were released on Xenon, you'd probably have people buying and selling rares on an XBL 'Marketplace' at $5 a pop, with MS taking a cut of every transaction, if Cam Ferroni's remarks are any indication. Sorry, but I'll pass.

what he said.

I didn't like PSO that much. I was hoping PSU would be PSV but it looks more and more like it'll be PSO2.

I haven't received the EGM yet, I doubt anyone has otherwise we'd all know the details. But from the first post...

The EGM cover also makes a point of saying 'the true sequel to PSO', so I think there are going to be some big changes.

Online play is obviously going to see a big improvement from going broadband-only, I think Offline will see a similar improvement by being more story-driven and RPG-like. The fact there are 2 named lead characters, and cinematics certainly suggests this.

yeah, because basicly, PSU is essentially Phantasy Star Online 2.

Final Fantasy XI is awesome on Sony's "network"

I'm glad this is on PS2, now there's a chance of it having a decent sized community.

PSU can *still* be PSV as well as PSO2!

Offline PSO was just a single-player version of the Online game, and was possible because everything was saved on the memory card. The interview makes it clear that PSU now uses server-side saving for your character, so with no internet connection you wouldn't be able to access your character.

Therefore Offline PSU is going to *have* to be something different from before. And the most likely thing is a more traditional RPG along the lines of PSV. Also I don't think they would have mentioned both PSO2 and PSV in the trailers if one set of fans was going to be completely let down.

The best way to exploit the huge userbase of the PS2 is to produce something that appeals to all PS fans, and that is what I think they are trying to do with PSU. It would also explain why they weren't as bothered as they might have been about Sony dropping HDD support as the game isn't totally dependent on it. And also explain the recent remakes of the old PS games on PS2.

It is like you read my mind and somehow made it coherent.

Online mode or not, if it must be a realtime battle system like PSO then make it play like ninja gaiden or Wind waker so I'm actually having fun instead of just killing time. I've tried 3 seperate MMORPG games and they all suffer from the same god awful auto matic fighting engines , when will they realize that even more folks would be addicted to these games if they were fun to play on top of being timesinks ?

Any credit Naka has accrued over the years has been completely annihilated by Sonic Team's miserable mudslide into sub-mediocrity territory following the Dreamcast's demise. Where once stood Samba, Chu Chu Rocket, and the original PSO, now lies a series of absymal Sonic Adventure games featuring less and less Sonic, Billy Hatcher, lackluster PSO follow-ups, and Astro Boy (see also, murder porn). Barring Puyo Puyo, which in itself is quite hard to destroy entirely, Sonic Team hasn't really done anything worthwhile in ages.

Much as I'd love to get excited about this, I'm finding it hard. You EGM folks (johntv?) haven't played this, correct? Just seen it at this point? Makes me wonder what AV is up to these days...

Yuji Naka's certainly come a long way.

What makes you say this?

PSU will never be accepted by PS die-hards who hated PSO. That's all there is to it really. At this point I don't care WHAT Sonic Team releases in relation to Phantasy Star, I'm just going to ignore it.

"EGM: Are you excited about the next gen consoles, or do you think it's too early?

YN: I think it is too early. The PS2 and GameCube are still both very good platforms. Personally, I don't want the next generation platforms to come out this early, because they will be very difficult and expensive to develop for. Seriously, it might take three times the effort to make one game. If we look at movies that use CG, you don't have to use CG for everything. Look at Spider-Man -- that character is CG, and everyone in the theater looks at him and it looks great, but the rest of the shot might be film shot of real things and people. Whereas in games, everything has to be created with CG, from every side, and angle -- the buildings and everything. With next-generation platforms, we'll have to make everything look as good as movies...it will be very difficult. It will be cool when you can play a game that looks like a movie, but there's no way a company will be able to make a game in one year like that. And if fans of a franchise have to wait three years for the next game, that will be a shock to them. People who like games want to play them more often these days. Like Half-Life 2 -- it took five years to come out! What's next? Will gamers be willing want to wait 15 years for a game!? (laughs) The father will start programming a game, and he'll have to pass it on to his son to finish it after he dies. On PC right now, there aren't a lot of games being released like it used to be...I think the same thing will happen to consoles. It takes a lot of time to develop a top-quality game.
"

looks like we won't see any Sonic Team's game on Xenon before a while

YN: I think it is too early. The PS2 and GameCube are still both very good platforms. Personally, I don't want the next generation platforms to come out this early, because they will be very difficult and expensive to develop for.

yeah - and the sonic team doesnt know to develop a good looking game for these generatione. how should they do that on the next? :lol
