"Phantom Dust is obviously not without its flaws, but it scores big points by offering the most strategic Xbox Live experience available. Patient players willing to take the time to continually tweak and test their arsenals of skills will find themselves with a new favorite game to play online. For unplugged gamers, the story mode isn't worth the $50 price tag it had when the game was released in Japan, but it's definitely worth $20. The budget price even makes Phantom Dust a great recommendation for fans of the director's previous work (Panzer Dragoon Saga, Ring of Red), as subtle similarities abound in this bizarre but ultimately rewarding Xbox underdog. "

Has anyone actually collected all 300 skills? Can I play on XBL right away, or do I need a decent arsenal first?

for the music fans....

Notable is Phantom Dust's soundtrack, composed by long time Sega arcade composer Takahiro Yagi, is dark and complements the game???s visual aesthetics. Yagi provides a stellar soundtrack that blends melancholy classics like Sakura Sakura and Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata with syncopated static and skittish beats. Hollywood actor/director and rocker Vincent Gallo provides the game's end theme, "Yes I'm Lonely," that completes the package on one of the best game soundtracks ever assembled. The official soundtrack is currently available in Japan and is well worth the price of overseas shipping.

MAn, didnt know MS had such a talented group of guys working for them over in Japan.

I really want to buy this, but all my XBL buddies are getting Spikeout Xtreme instead. I'll wait for more impressions....

Can we have a breakdown of teams over at MS J?

jarrod seems to know all that crap... it wasn't too long ago that he gave the breakdown. I'll see if I can dig it up.

edit: found it

Two teams,

Team Breakout - Magatama - the team is now working with and assisting Mistwalker on the 2 RPG's.

Team Tree - Phantom Dust - the team is most likely assisting Q Entertainment.

I've been listening to the Phantom Dust soundtrack nearly non-stop for the past few days (albeit, only like 6 or so of the 18 songs on total repeat). It is fucking awesome. And very moody. If you're into IDM and other forms of electronic experimentation, I wholly suggest this soundtrack... get it from amazon.co.jp.

It took me about 40 hours to get all 300 skills, and 100 hours more to score ten rare skills. So I'm at 310/340.

Unless I quit my job and move in with my folks, there's no way I'll be getting those remaining 30 rare skills unless MGS eases the requirements. (Can you tell I'm considering it?)

As far as I know Team Tree is working on a new game concept. They have a true game designer (Futatsugi has nothing to prove anymore), contrary to Team Breakout where Kawai is "just" a programmer, and proved with Magatama that he may not be the best suited for a designer role.
Ho, and expect some nice 1st/2nd party titles for Xenon's japan launch :)

So Che, novery, is it worth buying for just the single player game?

At $20 bucks? Hell yes this game is worth buying, even if you don't online.

There are people out there who will probably pay as much for the new TMNT game on PS2. What the hell?

Hey I only just learned to read. I was kinda gunning for your impressions, unless you are Ryan Payton then

Oh I gotcha. Yeah, that's my review.

I enjoyed the single player, but seriously, running around to find the specific NPC who will give you your next mission sucks.

Thanks for clarifying. I hope they give Yukio the resources and freedom he needs to create something spectacular.
