I noticed this, but I'm guessing it's because he's a minority and not white :x.

I don't really think it's cultural-appropriation, since anime is... well, widely shared and enjoyed around the world. I guess it depends if people think anime is cultural, or if it uniquely should belong to the Japanese?

Well it's just animation which spreads pretty well across counties since a lot of western have taken cues from anime works and adapting to similar techniques or styles into their own productions and vise versa. I know Avatar animators were required to watch FLCL and adapt the animation techniques used (And they largely failed for the most part to capture what made the animation dynamic and stylish.) and Panty and Stocking took stuff from western cartoons and South Park strangely enough.

It's because it's not. Animation is a medium and an industry.

That's pretty awesome, I'm giving it my seal of approval.

I had to :P

Wow, that was pretty random. And I'm surprised to see Fantasy Zone and " forgot name, something to do with Takahashi Meijin" game reference.
...
It's interesting.

Goddamn it Pharrell. You're a 40 year old man. 40 FRRIGIN' YEARS OLD. And you come out appearing in animu like this???

smh

:d

Love it. This will date faster than yogurt left on the counter or a Dee-Lite video, but can't hate an artist referencing classic games. I can also definitely picture him and Daft Punk watching Animes during breaks in the studio.

Sadly these days "Moe" is one of the defining points of a majority of anime and its not gonna go away anytime soon.

Feel like the stigma is also due to the weird/over the top people who enjoy anime. Doesnt really give good impressions when your saying jap words while doing weird motions.

I know there's that weirdo stereotype, but I feel like if you carry yourself well and show yourself to not be a socially inept person, then saying you're into anime shouldn't matter. But, eh, everyone handles it however they're comfortable I guess.

Anime is specifically a Japanese medium/style/product though. It's undeniably a product specific of Japanese culture. I'm not arguing there should be outrage though. I think cultural-appropriation-backlash overall is one of the stupidest things to come out of the PC-movement. If artists wanna explore and play with aesthetics from other cultures, they shouldn't be punished for it. Nor should their example be held as the be-all-end-all representation of said culture. Lord forbid people explore something foreign for fun.

No offense but this post demonstrates a lack of understanding of cultural approriation and why it is a problem. Cultural appropriation is defined as: “Taking intellectual property, traditional knowledge, cultural expressions, or artifacts from someone else's culture without permission. This can include unauthorized use of another culture's dance, dress, music, language, folklore, cuisine, traditional medicine, religious symbols, etc. It's most likely to be harmful when the source community is a minority group that has been oppressed or exploited in other ways or when the object of appropriation is particularly sensitive, e.g. sacred objects.”

Generally there's a fine line between appreciation of culture and cultural appropriation. The problem with cultural appropriation is that it commodifies a culture while erasing its original intent and original participants. Wearing a Native American headdress for example as a fashion statement is not appreciation because a headdress is not a fashion item. It's culturally significant to Native American tribes so to commodify it and erase it's meaning in the process to use as a prop for your fashion statement is very insulting and contributes to ongoing oppression.

All that being said this isn't cultural appropriation.

Where can I buy a N.A. activation key for Ramen noodles

Because this Top Ramen is making cultural appropriation taste so good

What was going through my mind as I was watching the video was if someone contracted out to pharrell to do a video that will be used for a OP or ED of a anime.

Between the video and reading the comments here my sides hurt from laughing so hard.

The characters gave me Hidamari Sketch vibes, which is a great show that everyone should watch.

Only complaint is that Pharell should've picked Juri.

Wow, that pixel art is stunning. They did so much work for stuff that's only briefly seen in a music video.

And it all looked accurate. Everything was animated, scaled, and rotated in the correct resolution. It didn't ever look like they were using too many colors. The tearing and palette changes were a nice touch. I'm blown away by the attention to detail.
