Revisionist history much? Not allowing self publishing (if true) is just damning though. Sell more content for less money and reap the 30% cut. Who cares if it's a bunch of $1 garbage. You still get your 30%.

I don't doubt he's right though. Competitors removing barriers while MS is adding them, seems pretty likely that indies would go for the path of least resistance if the earning potential is similar.
